If you listen to Haward a lot you know that he rarely lets a musical guest complete an entire song before he interrupts. But he recognized how awesome this song was soundfing and let him play. Obviously Grohl gets the credit, but you have to at least give Stern partial credit for this track even being out there as it is now.
This song went viral before such a thing even really existed, everyone was playing this performance, much like the lady gaga version of the edge of glory, Howard Stern always gets the best out of his guests
I remember listening to Howard Stern that day and when I heard Dave play this acoustically, I actually stopped to listen, it was awesome then and its awesome today. I have been trying to learn to play it! Wow, thanks for posting!
Man, this audio clip is so awesome - even ten years later I still love it. Makes me aware of how awesome it is to be yourself around a girl and have her down to be with you.
they aired this on the old howrd stern radio show that was on CBS. i believe it was played over the closing credits for the show.....i wish it was still around
i heard it live too. the pressure changed in the atmosphere. i am not even into this band...but hearing this that morning on STERN.......it was Alchemy.
they have never been able to do another version close to this.
@MajorsGirl I like this version, including the "I'm goin' to have to shorten the break down thing" intermission by Dave. I catch myself many times still expecting him to say that whenever the studio acoustic release version comes up on the radio.
25,795 views! Are you kidding me! This may be Grohl's best performance and he did it live on the Stern show. Props to Stern for having a small part in this majical performance. I remember being late to work a few times because of how great the Howard Stern Show was.
gansenrouses, in looking back at the comments that have been posted, it's amazing to see how many people shared the experience of hearing this live, and were worried they might never hear it again. so, thanks again from all of us for posting this magic moment in radio/music history.
I love this version as well as when he performed at Wembley. It's weird how haunting it can be when he just sings it or when a max capacity crowd joins him.
Yes, it's totally amazing! Like Howard, I got chills listening to it as it aired during my commute to work back in the mid-90's, and I didn't get out of my car until the entire interview with Dave was done. Again, amazing!
PeterZeeke,
Thanks for catching my earlier typo ... it actually had to have been the mid-90's (rather than the early 90's, which is what I had originally meant to type). Thanks again!
or you could buy the Greatest Hits album which features both versions, the original and the acoustic one. enjoy! (maybe you've already bought it :) anyway it's a damn good song)
you can probably find this on itunes or something. I know back during the napster days this version was easy to find, especially the ending when Dave says, "I just gotta rock!" F-ing classic song
