  • Can you come to a complete stop in a truck without downshifting?

  • @crackhouse203 Sure. For instance if you're in traffic and someone cuts you off and pulls in front of you, or runs a light, you don't have much choice except to push in the clutch and hit the brakes. But if you know ahead of time that you'll be slowing down it will save wear and tear on the brakes if you downshift. Also when you go down a steep hill downshift into a lower gear to keep the brakes from burning up (downshift before you start going down the hill)

  • @jimscee thanks that was helpful

  • double clutching and do you just dump the clutch or do you let it out slow like in a commuter car

  • Learned to drive on an automatic truck but this is the best I've seen so far on shifting. Thank you

  • Im 13 and my cousin let me drive a brand new 2012 peterbilt 379 semi and i was wpndering why did it not go into some gears when i shifted?

  • where you double clutching here?

  • @abdulmalik34 i didnt see it. half way in only once per change. same way i drove.

  • nice video

  • Awesome videos, please make more. I am about to start going to school thanks to your videos.

  • okay okay, so with RPM you muliply it by 100 not 10.........

  • @stocktonfisherman I pull a van trailer, a different one every day. Anywhere from a 28' to a 53'. I think I had a 53' in every one of the videos.

  • could u make a video of how to float gears?

  • Thank you for explaining the different steps. Can you make a different video on how to float the gears. You do a tremendous job on explaining it so I can understand it better.

  • im so pumped start school for my cdl in two weeks even got a job all ready!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thank you very much for your videos. Please make some more tutorials about trucking, like how to connect the tractor with the trailer or tips about when and how to down shift in particular situations and so on...

I know there are some videos about that already but I really like the way you explain things.

Keep on truckin' and take care.

  • @sideslide23 I got started by loading trucks for quite a few years at a company that had a small fleet of about 7 or 8 trucks, then eventually bid on a drivers job with that company when one of the drivers retired. Check around for any small companies in your area that use tractor trailers to deliver their product. You can also try doing a search for truck driver forums. Once you get on there you can read some feedback about different trucking companies and the experience they require..

  • @sideslide23 try going to a construcion companie and start runing dump truck and start that way do u have any tickets, accidents try the bigger companies like swift.

  • @dmta I didn't have any ticket yeat I haven't had any accident since we were moving from California to Arizona thats when I crashed the U-haul truck back of my Dad on the I-10 back in 2005 thats the only accident I had.

  • @sideslide23 STEVE TRANSPORT N WERNER WANT TO HIRE ME AND I DON,T HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE WHAT SO EVER . I DON,T WANT TO GO BECAUSE THE ECONOMY IS NOT THAT GOOD N I DON,T WANT TO LEAVE MY PRESENT JOB AS YET. I AM WAITING FOR THE ECONOMY TO GET MUCH BETTER . TOO SCARED TO LEAVE MY JOB N FING THAT ITS WORSE OUT THERE . BUT I THING OF TRUCKING EVERY DAY THATS MY PASSION . I JUST WANT TO GET THE EXPERIENCE SO I CAN GET MY OWN TRUCK THATS ALL . WANT TO WORK FOR TO YEARS N GET MY OWN TRUCK .

  • @bonehead1603 Werner, no, you have to go to their driving school otherwise you start all over, Steave transport its all the way in Texas, Swift, yes its in my area accept it would cost me $4000 to get in there, so CR, Englad yes although there in Salt Lake City but I have relatives that lives there so CR england I could get in for less.

  • @sideslide23 DO YOU HAVE YOUR LICENSE ? YOU HAVE ME CONFUSE . ARE YOU SAYING THAT EVEN THOUGHT YOU HAVE YOUR LICENSE IN HAND THEY WILL STILL CHARGE YOU MONEY FOR GOING TO THEIR SCHOOLS . IF THIS IS WHAT YOU ARE SAYING I NEVER HEARD THAT OF STEVEN TRANSPORT OR WERNER . I SPOKE TO THEM AND THEY NEVER BROUGHT THAT TO MY ATTENTION .

  • @bonehead1603 I do have my Class A CDLlicense I got it in December of 2010 and later added tanker and hazmat encorcement,

  • @bonehead1603 Some company's will pay you to train with them for 2 weeks and when you get your CDL you start right away. some company's also give you a opportunity to own there truck after 3 years of driving for them. that's what some trucking company's in North Dakota r doing now.

  • @sideslide23 The big ones like Schneider, SWIFT, JB Hunt, etc.

  • @Boodieman72 thank you, I'm allready in CR England.

  • I have Road test on Tuesday June 21,2011 Littel nervous..

  • @arttanic sorry I didn't get back to you. I was on the road quite a bit last week. Hope you did well on your test.

  • @arttanic REMEMBER YOU HAVE TO GO TO A SCHOOL ,SCHOOL , NOT A PRIVATE COMPANY OR A FRIEND TO LEARN TO DRIVE TRACTOR TRAILOR . BECAUSE TRUCKING COMPANY WILL NOT HIRE YOU PERIOD . HAVE TO GO TO A SCHOOL . FOR INSURANCE REASON THEY WILL NOT HIRE YOU IF YOU WAS TRAIN BY A PRIVATE COMPANY OR A FRIEND . I FAIL THREE TIMES FOR BEING NERVOUS . ALWAYS FORGETTING SOMETHING . THE EXIMINER SAID WHEN YOU READY PULL OUT , I PULL OUT AND FORGET TO DO MY 50 FEET BRAKE TEST THATS 15 OR 20 POINTS DOWN THE DRAIN.

  • @bonehead1603 you dont HAVE to go to a school. but it helps. i did, and had a job waiting. my frined learned on his fathers truck, took him a little while longer, but he had a job as well shortly after getting his CDL

  • @yamahonkawazuki BUDWEISER IS HIRING BUT THEY ONLY HIRING SPANISH DRIVERS ONLY VERY PREJUDIC COMPANY . I WAS SPEAKING TO A TRUCK DRIVER WHO DISTRIBUTE GAS TO THE GAS STATION . HE SAID AFTER HE GET HIS LICENSE FROM LONG ISLAND HE WENT TO BORE,S HEAD COMPANY TO APPLY FOR A JOB . THE OWNER WALK UP TO HIM PUT HIS HAND,S AROUND HIS NECK AND TOLD HIM WHILE WALKING HIM OUT THE DOOR AND SAID TO HIM . SON THERE WILL NEVER COME A TIME WHEN YOU WILL SEE A BLACK MAN WORKING FOR BORE,S HEAD . NEVER SEE ONE

  • @bonehead1603 please turn off caps lock lol. if youve got your CDL ( wiht a and hazmat. maybe get trandems too. ) you CAN go to one of these schools for a refresher. and WILL have a job waiting u0pon graduation. you will be contracted to them for a year, but will have a job. OR get on at a factory which has its own trucks. if your MVR is clear, you shouldnt have an issue. could also get a job at a dealership selling trucks. youd be desirable because you have a cdl. and can deliver them

  • @yamahonkawazuki WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD LEAVE A JOB IN THIS ECONOMY , I AM NOT THAT STUPID . MANY DO AND ALL REGRET THEY DID . I WILL WAIT TILL EVERY THING PICK UP . I HAVE BEEN ON MY PRESENT JOB FOR CLOSE TO SIX YEARS . I HAVE SEEN GUYS LEAVE N TRYING TO COME BACK AND THE BOSS WILL NOT HAVE THEM BACK . THATS SCARED THE SHIT OUT OF ME . I HAVE GOT TO PLAN SMART .

  • @bonehead1603 yeah you do. i hold jobs as well. as long as humanly possible. if id be moving to another job, id have itlined up beforehand, and try to transition into it so theeres no break in pay. like say i worked first shift and old job, id ease into new job at second shift. so i could continue on with pay, without a stoppage in it

  • @arttanic did u get ur license?

  • thanx for the vid,, Are you dubble clutchin??

  • @arttanic no. I usually push in slightly on the clutch to take it out of gear, then slip it into the next gear without using the clutch.

  • Thanks Jim

  • Jim, I have problems climbing hills with my truck loaded. I got an automatic tansmission on it. Someone said that I had to fuel it up, others told me that I had to change to a manual transmission. Help me plz, thanks.

  • @emerson5478 I've never driven an automatic. Maybe someone out there with experience with one could comment on this. I have trouble pulling hills if I've got a heavy load and it's a steep hill. I may have to downshift a couple gears, so a lot depends on the situation that you're talking about.

  • you should be double clutching

  • what truck were you driving?

  • @fishtankfreak A 9 speed Kenworth. I'm in a newer Kenworth now, 10 speed.

  • CDL here i come!

  • I haven't driven daily for over a year now and I have a road test on Friday to see if I qualify for a job @ Southeastern and I drove 40 footers for Coca Cola in down town Atlanta for over 10 years. The test may be in a 53 footer so I'm a little nervous. Is there a huge difference in the two? I've driven split shifts but mostly single axle 40 footers. I NEED THIS JOB. Your videos put me at ease a little.so thanks for that.

  • @mykulc For a lot of us backing a short trailer can be more difficult than a long one. Since a short trailer reacts more to a slight turn of the wheel, I would say that you may have to turn the wheel more than you're used to if you're taking a test in a 53 footer.

  • @mykulc no man dont be worried at all if you can drive in atlanta you can drive anywhere my experience the SMALLER the trailer the harder no problems with the 53 footer i know im late i hope u got the job lol

  • HEY JIM GUESS WHAT??? I PASS MY ROAD TEST, HELL YEA NOW IM READY TO GO OVER THE ROAD, BUT I HAVE TO LOOK FIRST FOR A JOB, HOPEFULLY I WILL START WORKING AT THE END OF THIS MONTH. THANKS JIM HOPE TO SEE YOU ONE DAY .

  • @theundertaker2923 YEAH,GOOD JOB!!

  • HEY JIM, THANKS TO YOUR VIDEOS I CAN DRIVE A TRUCK, AND EVERYTHING ON THIS VIDEO ITS TRUE, THANK YOU SO MUCH JIM. YOU SHOULD DO A VIDEO ABOUT THE PRE TRIP INSPECTION AND BRAKE TEST. BUT THANKS FOR YOUR VIDEO JIM.

  • cool, i have your book, very good book by the way.

  • @maggotsretards Thanks. If you like the book and have time please leave a review on Amazon. Thanks again, Jim

  • @jimscee sure thing

  • I seen other videos where the trucker use the clucht just for the first gear, is cause they're using latest model trucks or something else? thanks

  • @LVDVSMAGNVS Once you use the clutch to get the truck moving you can shift gears without using it if you time it right.

  • I drive a water truck for the oilfields. and i usually keep my rpms between 1300 and 1800.when going uphill loaded i downshift at 1200 n try to stay about 1600 to 1700 rpm.if you try to shift up at 1200 rpm going uphill loaded with brine water, the engines gona die on you- Guaranteed.

  • I just bought your book,, going to driving school soon, and I need all the help I can get,, thanks

  • thanks for the help om tryna get pass alley dock now and learning how to get in front of my truck to the direction is going

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH JIM, IM GOING TO BUY YOUR BOOK, I THINK WILL HELP ME ALOT BECAUSE I WANNA GO TO A TRUCK DRIVING SCHOOL NEXT MONTH, IM 21 AND I WANNA BE A TRUCK DRIVER, WHEN I WAS A KID I ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A TRUCK DRIVER, THANKS TO YOUR VIDEOS IM READY, THANK YOU SO MUCH.

  • @theundertaker2923 You're welcome. Good luck with school, Jim

  • @theundertaker2923 You said what I am saying. Are you in school now?

  • @TheKyla1981 YES I AM, I WILL TAKE MY ROAD TEST THIS SATURDAY HERE AT NEW JERSEY, I HOPE TO PASS THE PRE TRIP AND BRAKE TEST, I HAVE ALL MY ENDORSEMENTS, BUT ABOUT JIMS VIDEOS ARE TRUE JUST WATCH THEM AND YOU WILL LEARN ALOT.

  • @theundertaker2923 I'm glad for you. Open road here you come, I hope to c ya there.

  • are in canada?

  • @raulsrodrigues No, I'm in the States

  • Thank you for your help. It has been very valuable. When I started to go to my driving school, I was not able to back up the trailer ,but after I watched your video, I could do it easily.I am pretty sure your book will be as helpful as well. Any advice on parallel parking?

  • @jwilight95 If I'm parallel parking I get at maybe a 45 degree angle to the curb, so that I can see the trailer tires plus the curb in the mirror. Then back up slowly and when the trailer tires are within a foot of the curb turn the steering wheel to the right, (if the curb is on the passenger side). Don't turn too much or the back of the trailer will start going out away from the curb. Then turn it left to get the front of the tractor close to the curb.

  • is it also possible to shift without clutching? i read that somewhere.

  • @WNxRadeon Yes, it's possible. I think a new driver should start out using the clutch. Most drivers tests require it. Later on when you get used to shifting, use the same RPM that works on your truck as a guide when to shift, back off on accelerator and quickly take it out of gear, then slip it into next higher gear.

  • @WNxRadeon

yes. this is called "floating" the clutch. if you match your rpms correctly, you can take the shifter out of gear without pushing the clutch. then you can also put it in the next highest gear as long as you keep the rpms in the correct range for the gear you are shifting into. not hard to do once you get the hang of it actually.

  • love the sound of that kw

  • hello Jim..nice vid. Any way my company has a 7speed box truck.(6 gear and a low gear) It doesnt have any switch on the gear stick..My question is>do you cange gears the same way?

  • Well, you don't have to worry about a hi or lo range. Follow the diagram, usually on the shift knob or dashboard to go through the gears. The basic idea is the same, although the best RPM on the tachometer for shifting may be a little different for your truck. Make a note of the RPM when it seems to shift easiest.

  • This is really helpful

  • What Kind of tractor do you have?

  • @SuperJohndeere4020 Kenworth

  • When you release the parking brake, why did you press two buttons and what is the hissing noise?

  • The red button applies just the brakes on the trailer. The yellow button sets the tractor parking brakes. On my truck (and probably most trucks) when I pull the yellow button out to set the parking brakes the red button comes out by itself also. So when I want to release the parking brakes to get moving again I have to push in both buttons. The hissing noise is a normal sound for the air valves behind the dash that the buttons are connected to.

  • Hey Jim. Great video. I really want to do this some time. There's a training school nearby, and I really want to apply when I get my G licence. (I'm canadian btw.)

  • do you have to push the clutch half way before up shifting or just let off the throttle let the rpms drop 3 hundred then upshift which is the correct way and do you do the same when downshifting ,thanks

  • In the videos I described pushing the clutch halfway for those that use it. Drivers get into different habits. Some double clutch, some dont use it at all except when starting from a dead stop. I push it in slightly to take it out of gear then slip it into the next gear without using the clutch. Jim

  • @jimscee I heard that with the driving test they penalize you when you don't use the clutch is that true?Great vids..I'm taking in alot and I definitely want to get your book.Any idea if you would ever do a video series?

  • @gamesmaster35 Thanks! As far as the driving test, I don't know if any states do it differently, but I would use the clutch if I were you. I've been thinking about putting together a DVD of the videos.

  • thanks ☆☆☆☆☆

  • yeah i just have some questions i havent been trucking for long maybe a year and i drive a 1977 kenworth w900a with a 400 cummings and 13 speed eaton and i was just wondering if there was something wrong with it cause in 13 gear my top speed is only 62ish mph and you said you were 65 in ninth gear or is that just because it is an older truck and it seems maybe because i dont know what i am doing but it shifts a little better in a little higher rpm range. do older trucks drive different? thanks

  • My truck is limited to 65 mph because the company that I drive for has their trucks governed for a top speed of 65. Its possible that your truck was set for a top speed of 62. On modern trucks a mechanic just plugs a little hand held computer into the truck and sets a new top speed. Ask around, see if your truck has some kind of govenor on it . 1500 is a good point to shift in my truck. Might be different in another truck, especially in an older one like yours.

  • @jimscee jim. my dad drives a 2007 mack vision and the shift point is the same as yours around 1500RPM's thats how i learned..very cool video!

  • do you gotta double clutch?

  • I don't, but I hear that some examiners like to see it on the road test. I don't think I did on my road test. Jim

  • how many books have you sold. great videos.

  • When my father drove the Volvo FL 12 12 speed.

He use to skip shift. That means he skipped the low range gears. And started right in the high range gears. I can see you are using all your gears though. Sounds like you could skip shift a little more.

  • I know what you mean . I wanted to show how it looked going through all the gears and to show that you spend a little more time in each gear as you go up. When I've skipped gears I don't think I've ever not used some of the low range. Maybe start in 2nd, then to 4th, then through all the high range gears. Jim

  • Okay : D

  • thanks alot very clear and to the point

  • I"ll say one thing, the truck has really good oil pressure!

  • Great video! Very clear and to the point. My brother's kid is getting started as a driver, so I sent him the book. Thanks!
