Goosebumps, chills watching that hauler leave the track. For Kyle Petty to say that was the saddest thing he ever saw? He lost a son in the sport! Must have been devastating!
I can still remember the phone message I received on the morning of April 2nd thinking that it was just a late April Fools joke being played on me by my friend.Having spent the entire day on April 1 waiting to by tickets for a race in Richmond we got home late that night and went right to sleep.I rushed to the television flipped on ESPN and I was CRUSHED. I am privileged to be able to have called Alan my friend and me not just being a fan.His passing left a huge hole in my life. Miss you buddy!
I was lucky enough to meet him in 1992, a year before he passed away. He was in a mall in Gastonia, NC when my family and I (then just four) ran into him, and being the NASCAR fanatic that I was, instantly recognized him. My parents said he was the nicest, most polite athlete they had ever met, and said he got a kick out of me. I got his autograph, but after we moved, we never could find it. Oh well. A great driver and a great person.
I live in Blountville, Tn. just a few miles from where the crash occured. I was in the 7th grade when that all happened. I'll never forget the local news reporting what happened that night. He was a great guy and a great driver.
alan was one of the best! you see some drivers trying to do this same thing but now it will never work. it was not till years later that i noticed that he was a great driver, i miss seeing him drive, never once did he ever drive to take some one out, some drivers should take a good hard loo at how he drives!!!!
I was barely 2 years old when this happened so i never witnessed this man... my highschool baseball coach showed my team this video for extra inspiration before our team started since he thought we were underdogs... it was the mostmoving video i have ever seen and this man gave me hope to continue to follow my dreams.. thank you alan R.I.P
to me, I've said it for years on end since Jeff Gordon became a huge name, he would not be a 4 time champion if Alan Kulwicki or Davey Allison had not died. No way, no how...those two were unbeatable in their times. Give credit to Gordon and Evernham for all they've done, but that 7 Underbird and 28 Texaco Havoline Ford would have been in the way of those championships he won.
everytime I see an alan tribute, I cry. I was born the very day he died, and at roughly the same time. my dad love alan (as a driver) and he didn't know whether to be happy I was born, or crushed because his favorite driver hd died.
My family and I will miss, love, and always remember you Alan Kulwicki, Rest in piece.
Also, fort to mention. IMO, best NASCAR WInston Cup driver who ever drived. He did what Petty, Pearson and Yarborough could never pull off in that kind of equipment. He was the only guy who knew his way around the car better than his own mechanics. He wanted to do it his own way, and refused to even sign with Rick Hendrick. He is my inspiration to get into NASCAR, and the reason I'm going to college before I start driving. He should have been a shoo-in for the HOF this year, IDK why not.
Alan Kulwicki turned down a million dollar sponsership with JJ and at that time that was a huge offer and he decided to run his own team and he won a championship doing it. If he didn't die he would have won at least 3 championships....
Alan Kulwicki made one of the last TRUE come backs in NASCAR, with the Chase, NASCAR GIVES points, thus helping JJ to 3 titles (I think it will be 4) He EARNED every point to win the title. He asked if we were proud to have him as our Champion... Yes Alan, we were!
I never saw Alan race becasue I got into racing in 1998, but I have to say that when
I saw Alan Kulwicki's hauler leave the Bristol Motor Speedway right after he died that was the saddest thing in NASCAR I have ever seen. I saw this video when it first aired on ESPN and I got choked up of course who wouldn't. All of NASCAR misses Alan. RIP #7.
Thanks for the memories...Alan will always be my Champion...he did it his way...against all the odds...and along that road he always took time for his fans...forever missed but never forgotten.
it was taken from prerace on espn I remember they said they didnt tell Rusty Wallace they were going to show it and then he saw it and he was pretty choked up about it..
I say in all the history of this sport, it must mave been shameful when he died. Man I wish I'd seen more when I was growing up. Must have been the best and hardest times in NASCAR. A great driver you were Alan.
There will never be another race like that....I know Im gonna get some grief but from start to finish the 92' Hooters 500 was the greatest race in history....6 drivers in contention for the championchip, The championchip going to the final laps, Richard Petty running his last race while Gordon ran his first....nothin can top that
I agree, the best ever. It's too bad about Alan and Davey leaving us so soon after this race. Davey would have been the champ in 1994had he lived, and maybe a couple of times after that as well.
The four people I wonder what woulda become had they lived were Rob Moroso, Davey Allison, Alan Kulwicki & Adam Petty....who knows what the sport would look like now if they were still here
what always amazes me about this race is they knew if they just led more laps than elliott they win the title he didnt try to get greedy and win the race led the laps and just mantained 2nd to clinch
Watching the original broadcast of this brought tears to my eyes. Seeing anything on Alan does. It's so hard to believe it's been 14 years. We miss you Alan. :'(

I still remember hearing the announcement and seeing his hauler leaving Bristol.
Who didn't break down when Rusty Wallace did a Polish victory lap for Alan.
You did it your way, Alan, and did what the experts said was not possible.
