when i first heard this album a few years ago, i wasnt impressed, but to start from the begining with R.I.P. and listen all the way through to GRIN, its just musical EVILution, and they are redonkulous, coroner > everything you listen to
LOL! If he WAS saying 'Watermelon' - that would sound very funny. Heavy music, vocally, can easily, or intentionally be misunderstood so that the lyrics turn to comedy. Anyway, Coroner has always been vastly underrated and a huge influence on my guitar playing - for the last 20 yrs. or so. They are just an all around example of excellent music in more than just technical proficiency but song structure, writing, and keeping their material new, unique and interesting.
@azhagoth This is Coroner. There are many albums like R.I.P. in that period. But there is only one album like Grin in all of the metal history. Period.
my first time hearing this album, WAY different from older coroner. it almost has a KMFDM feel to it sometimes. not my favorite coroner, but it's still awesome. they still fuckin shred.
"500 thrash and death metal Riffs" ALL uploaded now. 41 parts. 6 1/2 hours of Riffs! Keeping Thrash Metal Alive.....Lots of Coroner Riffs. Check out parts 5,15,16,17,24,29,34,36,38
Really like this track even though not as technical as early stuff. I think the album is a grower. Give it time!
In the beginning I hated this album. "WTF? There's no speed like Punishment for Decadence no catchy technical riffs like Mental Vortex what is this?" I listened to it more and more and today it just clicked. This album is SO different from their usual but thats what makes it amazing. It's Coroner not only in name but in atmosphere. It's like traveling through realms and vortexes to see something from a different perspective over and over and seeing it mutate into something different each time.
I agre, I was the same way. Most brilliant albums take multiple listens. Mr. Bungle's self titled debut and Thought Industry's "Song for Insects" were the same. Hence why they are in my Top 10 now.
corpuse - Im sure you could not get passed the first level of Metallica but do very well with the Beatles. So if you thought Grin was boring try listening to it on Acid. So your mind will open up a bit.
corpuse Also it was well liked from there peers. People Slayer, Rob Zombie, and monstrosity. #bucking lee the drummer turned me on the them. I hung out with all I mentioned and more and you would be surprised who like there Grin album. So I am sure you sit at home playing Guitar hero because I doubt very serious you can play and instrument.
corpusc Grin kicked ass yah it was not like the other but it got them international attention from Bevis and Butt head. They did there Grin in Tampa met the guys they were wanting to do something new down here in the Death Metal capital of the world.
the only good thing about this is the part of the solo at 3:17.
i don't mind the samples, or the STYLE change. i'd like to hear a GOOD metal album that uses samples instead of incredibly simple and repetitious crap. i hated that they stripped down the music so that was so simplistic that its pointless and virtually the same as a million other crappy bands. their strengh was in their incredible musicianship and ability to craft advanced compositions. not here
I do not quite agree with you, to me it's sn incredible LP, written like 20 years ago, imho almost revolutionary. Dark, obsessive, minimalist but with glimpses of melody, innovative riffs and beautiful solos.
I think they were ahead of their time, Grin makes me think somewhat of meshuggah style but less extreme and more melodic.
Music, like every art, is not all about advanced composition or ability. They wanted to express that grin mask feeling, and did it well, in my opinion
I dont know why everyone is so upsesed with metallicock, everyone claims that they started thrash yet overkil came out with cd's before them, obviously the bigger band will get the credit which is a shame because overkill is a million times better than metallicock
Kill em all is a great lp BUT......Its 100% Ifluenced by NWOBHM.....Just listen to "SWEET SAVAGE - -EYE OF THE STORM" Which was on NWOBHM REVISITED 79 Compilation made by Lars............S0, kill em all did not influenced all the scene, they were more bands at that time.
Of course KEA was influenced by the music that came before it (NWOBHM/Harcore Punk). But KEA was the first thrash album, and the album had more influence on the coming thrash bands than almost any other band/album.
WHO SAID THAT????... Ok it was a BIG hit at that time BUT, in 1983 EXODUS was already on the run, DARK ANGEL , RAZOR (WHICH ARE OLDER), EXCITER (WHICH ARE OLDER).....DO YOU WANT MORE??????????????????????????????? If you listen to those bands (WHICH I BELIEVE YOU HAVEN'T) they have NOTHING IN COMMON with K.E.A. NOTHING........So don't be stuck minded. THRASH MUSIC was a scene and it did not invented by metallica
An exodus member actually said that Metallica was the first. Gene Hoglan said Metallica was the first band that actually got good (they were amateurs at first). Razor formed after KEA. Exciter never made thrash, they are (speed) metal.
So sure, keep coming with those bands, Metallica is still going to be the first, most people who were actually there at that time credit Metallica as the first, and that's for a reason.
And yes, thrash music was a scene, Exciter wasn't part of it, Metallica was.
It seems that you stuck in marks and trademarks (SPEED THRASH CRAP e.t.c) and even if it was that way speed is a part of thrash or maybe pop music???? K.E.A. Opened a way, they were not the first, i have a recording of SLAYER before K.E.A. Also either you like it or not RAZOR start to play at 1977.....So did EXCITER which they did a 3 piece demo and then they made their 1st album so sure (as you say) keep on coming with those bands.. ,search BETTER
Hit the Lights was the first thrash song... Also, take a look at the McGovney Garage demo, almost certainly the first thrash demo. Or No Life 'til Leather, also on of the early Metallica demo's.
Also, speed metal already existed before Exciter, and speed metal is just sped up NWOBHM, it has nothing to do with Hardcore Punk, while Thrash definitely has.
@Fleshsail and others : Coroner is back from the dead and playing at the Maryland Death Fest May 26-29 2011. Other fans, I will see you there. Metal...
i dont know...you guys are calling it shit..but I love this album...it's still fucking coroner and for 1993...it could have been WAY worse...they still maintained their guitar integrity and that solo...is just ridiculous................and the instrumentals are fucking tight...so fuck all you thrash or music elitists that claim to be oldskoolers.
one of the best solo's ever in this song.....
