Another great review mate! I know 11.04 is just brilliant but for now I'm using Linux Mint 12 and miss Conky but it's not er straightforward to install, is there an EASY way to install Conky?
I agree with Pinguy: 11.10 is unstable. Ok Xubuntu 11.10, but cannot add many tweaks/ apps. So using Pinguy 11.10, both 32 & 64 bit. It adds thing IMPOSSIBLE for other distros to attempt to try to add. I've tried using EVERY distro you've ever tested, including you latest OS-X type of Ubuntu. Still like Pinguy.
nice one ill try this one how it works with fullhd movies, cos i had issues with multiple players , new VLC wont install on 11.04. Hope 11.10 works better ill let u know. and dont use 1080p, on my 12" laptop on fullscreen is too small, thx
Cheers another good review, HD works better for me in full screen.
I can't see the logic of using Mod4 just to launch gnome-shell, I use that key to launch a few dozen other things ie: browser, music player, Xchat, Gimp, VLC player, Nautilus, email client etc etc.
I'm sure if I was bothered to install this ubuntu respin it would be easy to fix and assign a hot-spot or another shortcut to launch gnome-shell.
Hello, I'm using pinguy 11.10 works great. Just some few bugs. The one thing i miss the most is my compiz. I can't wait to get it up and working again on 11.10.
Forgot to mention in my opinion the best distro for absolute beginner would be Zorin OS and if you pay for the ultimate version even better because you get the Windows 7 and Mac OS X Desktop enviorments plus the added apps which simplify life a bit.
Hello, first let me say great video, compared to the others on youtube yours is by far the more detailed and informative. The full hd at the end of the video looks good and crisp at 720p but might be to small for most videos, and in the interest of your subscribers i think the best would be with the resolution you started the video in. I current use ubuntu 10.10 but will be migrating to ubuntu 11.10 fallback session with compiz... just like the Gnome 2 look and feel.
I watched the whole thing in full screen. The graphic quality seemed very similar in both resolutions. The lower resolution was better for me because text became almost too small to read in HD.
I always like to follow what Pinguy is doing, but I he adds quite a bit to the distro that I don't need. It's has been pretty much of an even strategy for me to either start with stock Ubuntu and add things or with Pinguy and remove.
Polished review as always. I've tried this distro. Looks are lovely, but I'm not a fan of clutter on the desktop. 2 dockys plus conky is too much. Also don't like the fact that he has taken the hot corner choice away. There is an extension that he should've included that allows toggling it on or off. Re:bare vs loaded, 1 app per task is a good general rule to follow I think.
1st reso is better. Nothing seems to be gained w/the higher reso.
Great review! As for the resolution, normally full HD would be fine but sometimes I like to watch these on my smartphone which makes it a tad harder to read. Your call though ;)
the resolution is a bit too small(I'm awake for over 35 h, but still...) even for my full hd display in full screen, set it lower at 1600ish, otherwise text is so friggin' small that I want to beat it! ((:
anyhu', like always, nice review mate, keep up the good work!
I miss the old GNOME 2.x UI, I felt like that UI was the best in that it left your desktop clean to display your wallpaper and few important folders and USBs, and I liked the top bar for all your needs, it made it feel like software wouldn't be forgotten
@InfinitelyGalactic Hey man, wondering which distro you are using currently, and is it good for absolute beginner? Reason I ask is I wanna try a linux operating system :)
@JohnnyOthman At the moment I'm using Ubuntu 11.10, which is probably the easiest for new users at the moment. You could also give Linux Mint a try if you don't like Ubuntu 11.10. Good luck!
@InfinitelyGalactic What would you recommend for gaming, simplicity, and good looks? I don't know what to get, cause I've basically just run Windows for as long as I can remember, lol...
The distro is awesome, so are you, but the resolution is a bit small for me to see details. Congratulations on the new laptop. Btw who is that Pinguy and how is he able to do all this on his own???
@avalanche8700 Pinguy is just the developer who makes most of the calls behind the operating system. He basically just takes the latest Ubuntu release, only installs the minimal components, and then customizes/tweaks/installs software until he's happy with it. Then he gets others to test it out and help him find bugs. I think that's how it works anyway. Anyway thanks for the feedback. Appreciate it. :-)
I thought TeamViewer was a native Linux app now. Why would it be running in Wine? Just curious. Great review, bro. I know a handful of new Linux users that love this distro.
Great review. Pinguy has always been my distro choice. what i do is use his "mini" versions that way i have all the interface customizations, but i can install the apps i want to have, without uninstalling the software i dont want. Now if only he did an arch linux version of pinguy 11.10!! omg, now that is my goal to have one day for a distro.
Full HD is to small for the viewers mate. I can't see s#$^

I like de-tweaking an over-full distro. On the Canonical, when I tried to remove Unity or Compiz, it crashed the whole system beyond repair.

@zpull77 I've heard Pardus is a really good KDE distro. And it's supported by the Turkish government if I recall correctly. You should give it a try.

I watch videos on full screen so the HD looks nice. Pinguy is probably nice but I prefer more simple distros. Happy Holidays!

Great review! I love the idea of Pinguy, but I find its just a little too "heavy" for my liking.
The resolution is fine here, I watch Linux distro reviews in fullscreen anyway so its still very clear to me.
Oh, that menu to me looks like Cardapio, was using it only a couple days ago here on ubuntu 10.04!

Personally for my laptop I prefer complete OSes like Pinguy but for my desktop I would rather Custom compile Gentoo or get a basic Arch install.
