Wow!! What a great video, I was a projectionist at a drive-in in Western Maryland, my dad was a projectionist there many years before me. Our projection booth looked almost exactly the same as the one in this vid. Our rewinder was basically a homemade with an electric motor also. I watched some of "Jeremiah Johnson" on TV tonight and I told dad, "I ran that one at the drive-in". I can't remember 'em all, but when I see 'em on TV I never forget.
I've almost forgot, the best family time watching a movie together was the drive-in's. One time in the early 60's I had just finished the chicken pox episode of my childhood. Missed preschool for awhile. But, I was allowed to go to the drive in movies with brother,Mom and Dad. Why my memory is so vivid, I was still itching. But, the pox, where healing. We had a Drive-In right behind our apartment in Indianapolis,Indiana. I wonder what became of that Drive-in.? Lived there in 1965.
Nice video! Thankfully we still have a big drive in theater near where I live "Holiday Drive In" in Reo, Indiana. It's got 5 screens too. They have all nighters on holiday weekends. Wish they could stay open all year round. =)
This brought back great memories and such a great tribute to Steve...he would be proud, this was his life and he so enjoyed it. Music was a great choice too, thanks for sharing this touch of the past...gone but not forgotten!
Great Site! Tried to re-open an old Drive-in, in Waterbury/Wolcott Connecticut, (the Lake Drive-in) but a chain store beat Me to the property. It seems the Chain store lucked out also though, as the town did not want another Big box store in town. The Chain store had already purchased the property, and they put it back on the market, but for twice what they paid for it. We still have two operating Drive-in's in Connecticut, a single screen in Barkhamstead, and a 3 screener in Mansfield.
I was a projectionist at our local drive in back in the 1970`s when I was 19 years old. We had RCA Benkert projectors and ashcraft lamp houses that were water cooled. And of course i loved the concession goodies they sold there. One of my best memories was when we ran Star Wars in it`s first re-release back around 1980 or `81 and we sold out that week end. I`ll never forget how great it felt to have all those cars there and all the business we did. I miss the place.
I was a projectionist at a drive in in Iowa for 14 years till they tore it down back in '93 to make way for a grocery store. Although I've moved on to bigger and better things, I still look back to the years at the Starlite with pride and a longing to return to the "good ol days".
@hite6622 thats amazing... to think it was a job a career for some people and it just went away. I miss the warm nights at the drive-in's but sadly thats something that will never come back again. It just wouldn't work now.
I always wanted to be a drive-in theater projectionist but by the time I got old enough they were dying out. My wife and I took Our two boys to the local drive in 15 years ago. When they got tired they fell asleep in the back seat and wifey and I snuggled in the front. That brought back memories then and this brings back memories now. The new generation just doesn't know what it's missing out on. I'm origiannly from Poplar, MT and we lost our drive-in in the mid 80's.
@bigkellyr I agree with you. While the indoors may be good, I rather stick with the drive-ins as it's something I've never went to. I feel like I've missed out on something that I should've went too.
Hey Tim, I can't say how much I miss the old Sandu Drive. This video made me all verclempt!! Most excellent trip into our lost days of being happy and free. Peace, man! ~ Steve F.
Thanks for the comment. I worked there for 25 years. The song is "Day After Day (The Show Must Go On)" by The Alan Parsons Project. From their 1977 album "I Robot".
RIP What a beautiful memorial to someone who obviously gave their life to entertainment. I cried & I didn't even know the man - but I knew the feeling!
