  • 1977 was a GREAT year when this jam was born, and this jam reflects what I was doing at the time!!!

  • Although '77 was indeed a good year, this wasn't released until 1980

  • Your right, by the fact, Slave came out with ' Slide"that year, they came much back to back hits thje next 3 years. Good Observation, Peace,.

  • This song reminds me of my dawg Keithy Giraudy, who died tragically in a car accident!! RIP Keithy, miss you my n***a!!

  • parkhill225, sorry for your loss you have many fond memoies of him to carry with you in your heart, i know the feelin see how this song took you down memory lane, he may be gone but he'll never be forgotten

  • I loved this song. The guys around my way use to sing this when me and my girls would walk by. Back in the days was such "goodtimes" (.... RESPECTFUL MEN Hola!

  • Hmm..I might break out a verse if i saw you walking today!!

  • LOL , any time Love anytime.. (smile)

  • I'm so glad I came up in the day when the brothers were spellbound watching us instead of rolling down the street sippin' on gin and juice. Life felt happy! We appreciate it, fellas! Thanks.

  • the first song that I ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

was alpha walking to,,Sander Hall lobby two University of Cincinnati 1981

  • that is Steve Arrington on the drums and vocals

  • This is what Snoop Dogg take from lol.

  • There's some serious Bar sliding going on with that funky Bass!

  • I was in the Army stationed in Seoul, Korea. Those were the days!!!

  • Sylvandale Jr. High, back in the day.

  • The chorus for Gin and Juice is an interpolation of this song!!

  • Remember that classic from EPMD 'Never seen before' parts of this was used on the remix

  • 24Adrian is right. However he sampled this on both of the songs.

  • Lol, mystasha has got to be feeling crunchy after that one.

  • Ahhhh yeah the Jam that I love Great to hear this song again

  • what part was sampled for "gin and juice"?

  • go back and listen to gin and juice...ts not that hard to tell

  • just the chorus part?

  • yeeaaaaah! EPMD Never Seen Before REMIX love it

  • im throwin a 80's party..in feb 2009 in brooklyn...hit me up

  • wats good with the party bra?

  • Goung nuts loving this smash hit!!!!!!!!

  • you are wrong!!! watching you came out before inside out from odyssey. odyssey followed slave. that said there was no sample machines back then. thank god!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I noticed that snoop sampled this song in "Lets get Blown".

  • He also sampled it for Gin & Juice

  • my jam

  • yes snoop sampled this , slave sampled the original from a song called inside out from Odyssey

  • That's not true. Slave was the originator. Inside out by Odyssey was produced by Slave, if I'm not mistaken, it was actually Steve Arrington that produced it.

  • Inside out is from 82 and watching you came out in 80

  • Yes 24Adrian I am confirming what you are saying. You are correct.

  • Everyone has noticed that Snoop sampled this song, but no one has seemed to have mentioned the classic EPMD song "Never Seen Before (Remix)" with the "watching you" part.

  • in let's get blown " watching at the ladies all of them fine "

  • you dont know nutn bout dem grits

  • thanx for the comments ,, there was a time when i was on stage a lot ,,

  • Nice.......... Steve Arrington at is best with Slave!!!! Love It Thanks Bro!

  • I remember 1st hearing this & instantly noticing where Tony Toni Tone & Snoop bit their stuff from

  • This is FUNK.

  • Still my favorite past-time. This is still the jam! Heard it in high school and grooved to it, walked the Boardwalk in Mission Beach in San Diego and Venice Beach playing this. Still have a cd of it. Amazing how the so-called 'oldie stations' seem to always miss this.

  • this song is way before my time, but I love it!

  • Please note although this song has a disco drum beat, it is NOT disco. This is a classic "Soul" jam!

  • thats not disco drums thats FUNK drums theres a HUGE diffrence

  • Agreed. I don't get a sense of Disco drums. It can fall into many categories, Funk, soul, R&B, but not disco IMO.

  • this is disco, homophobic racist middle america labled disco as this whitewashed fake imitation i.e. beegees, abba, real disco is this, this is real disco

  • I love this jam...reminds me of my rollerskating days & Coney Island.

  • hey you...yeah, never roller skated out there, but Empire in Bkln, Skate Key in the Bx but mostly put my time in at the USA in Mt Vernon..when you setting up the old school skate night??

  • yeah, I went to Empire in Bklyn when I was a kid but mostly went to Park Circle & USA Rollerskating Rink in Bklyn & Queens... let me see how we set up an oldschool skate nite. LOL.

  • OMG! I've been looking for this song forever! Thanks:D

  • I know what thats like..you're welcome!

  • I was a preteen when this was bumpin. My all time fave SLAVE jam. Still soundin great!

  • i think snoop has sampled this song in his song, gin and juice

  • Yeah...

  • lets get blown

  • Let's go crusin'

  • this was tha song ya heard

  • this iz real muzikk boy!!!!!!!!!

  • As a young guy from australia, listening to Snoop and Pharrell's song "Can i Get my Thrillz" sounds hot. But we have no idea it was sampled from true funk like Slave from way back. It angers me that those boys turned a funky wholesome song into drugs and sex. But at least i can now enjoy the foundations. Thanks mate keep the funk alive.

  • If it angers you, then don't listen to it.

I'm glad they remade the song, it keeps slave alive to modern listeners. Imitation is just a form of flattery.

  • Good point. But i didnt know it was a Slave sample for 3 years. Doesn't really keep it alive if you don't know its existence.

But yes, its a good sample.

  • I'm not against remakes except when the real artists don't get the credit they deserve. Debarges' Stay with me has been heavily sampled but the band doesn't see any royalties as the greedy record company made sure they get their hands on all of it!

  • I hear you, but the reason why that happens is due to the record deal the artists signed in the first place. A lot of artists are more in tune with owning the publishing rights of their material today, than they were back in the day. If you go look at the whole Dr Dre and Snoop Vs. Suge Knight beef after the split was based on publishing rights. The Deal Suge has/had in place allows him to put out a Snoop greatest hits album and reap most if not all the profits.

  • 24Adrian. Yeah, you are right. Teena Marie sued Mowtown for her royalties - she did an interview recently and advised artist about owning their publishing rights. Perhaps that's why so many successful black artists seem to end up broke???

  • Preach AviDao! I grew up in the Bronx and witnessed the birth of hip hop culture. I heard Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash and Caz, Bambaataa, Disco King Mario, etc. and they respected the music. You now have cats that can buy computers, samplers (and such) and all that they know is that they want to get paid. Musicianship is virtually nil. I truly believe that the elimination of music & art as a requirement in public schools aided in what I refer to as the dumbing down of urban music. Vote Obama08!

  • Yea thats it. You gotta give credit where its due, otherwise your just a plagarist. But to be honest, i love the fact there's still rappers and producers out there going back to the funk classics. But even De La Soul sampled Slave bassline and didnt lower its morals. But at the end of the day, its what you prefer.

  • True to that.. people sample the song because they LOVE the melody/beat!

  • REALLY Good news is that odds are extremely high that all these out-of-the-woodwork tracks w/samples WONT survive the test of time as the originals have already done and will continue to do

Remember all the cheap disco-tized covers of great R&B/Rock that died after the radio craze faded? Nope, u don't remember em and neither does anyone else. Only 2 survived outta thousands (MacArthur Park & Never Can Say Good-bye).

    Nuff said.

  • Funkymatt has a point. Just like TV ads can bastardize a song's image, so can sampling in a crappy track. It's an ugly trade-off helped ONLY when the creative artists gets some royalties, which as these smart posters noted, sure aint happening regularly enuff. Finally, ur not keeping anything 'alive' if u dont OVERTLY give props and FULL credit to the sampled piece.

  • I use to go to Perthamboy and dance with Saida and her boyfriend Nelson who's brother was a DJ Joey and my hustlyn patner was Danny..and I also miss Lourdez love u guys forever in my heart

  • ahh yeah!! the boogie down bronx, The Skate Key roller rink where are my skates baby!!!

  • wow the homies are right Odyssey totally copied this jam with "Inside Out"

  • Keep in mind, "inside out" was produced by Slave...might have been Steve Arrington but don't quote me on that..

  • oh i didnt know that i guesss that would justify the very similar music

  • it still shows a bit of a "lazy" on their part in my opinion, but that "Inside Out" is my joint, so i ain't that mad at them...

  • definitely "inside out" is a down ass jam classic music i especially enjoy a remix i heard i might be posting im just thinking it might offend the fans as the rap versions do (which i love by the way)

  • Wallslayer, thank you. I was afraid I wasn't included in that group. Born in 77. Holla. I can't stop my groove. I'ma bring to the yung bucks. They need to know wut it feels like to be tired as hell, but you're body won't stop moving to the beat.

  • I love this song! Brings back so many memories. They just don't make music like this anymore!

  • I luv this song, use to dance to it often,Practice in the mirror,My usual dance workout,Beauty!

  • then put a performance of you on youtube XD

  • I need a web camera.

  • I always thought that this song and Odyssey's "Inside Out" were both using an almost identical beat...

  • Is a comment really necessary for this kind of music? Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't good music kind of speak for itself? I would like to say thanks for the post, however!!

  • real music!!

  • The jam indeed for cruising the park on a lovely Sunday laughing and spending time : ))

    Simple pleasures.

  • i remember being young and absolutely in love with my freinds and the music that this song evoked in South London

  • I dedicate this song to my late great friend Gary Thomas. Gone but never ever forgotten. Me and U in the West End and Camden back in the day boogieing on down to this. Wow!! What great times we had. I miss you mate.

  • This song never gets old. I was groovin to this in the car so hard and this old white lady pulled up to me at the red light and started groovin too....lol!!

  • LOLLL! Good music has that effect on people!

  • Wow. What a voice Steve Arrington has. One in a million. Takes me straight back to my childhood. Lotta good music came outta Dayton, OH.

  • One of fhe best R&B funk tunes of the 80s. I love this song as it brought back true roots of yesteryear when grooves and tracks had substance and meaning. Today's music is garbage !!

  • Slave had a cold-ass bass player. All the instruments r cool, along with the lead singer and harmony. And that drummer be straight flowing with that funky-ass beat. Damn...classic!!!

  • you are so correct Bro! today's artist (entertainters) do not have a ounce of talent compared to the artists 70's and 80's.

  • PREACH!

  • fat pat jammin screw also sampled this RIP FAT PAT

  • Dayton Stand up!!!What up uncle Mark

  • The girl looks just right to me.. HA!!!

  • Classic Masterpiece of Authentic Funk. Arrington kills this song. I actually have this song in my car at all times on a CD with THE GAP BAND, SHALAMAR, CAMEO, OLD PRINCE, and M.J.

But for some reason anytime I listen to this the lyrics...

Rolling Down The Street Smoking Endo Sippin On Gin & Juice.

    At least Snoop Dogg Recognized!
