Ive seen this film nearly 10 times and its the best film Ive ever seen but theres still one thing I dont quite get. As Maximus was sent to be executed, the character Quintus betrayed him as he couldve easily used his pretorians against Commodus to save Maximus and his family, but he didnt. And during the film, Maximus doesnt show any hatred towards Quintus at all, he more like gives him friendly gestures etc. which is really confusing about the whole story. Does anyone have an answer to this?
@sondre2409 Choices. Stay as Maximus's right hand man. Or become the praetorian prefectus of Rome. Quintus was a character flipping between good and bad. He just slipped his mind. Remember when he was ordered to execute his own men for not reporting Maximus's escape? You feel his mind. Remorse! And in the elevator, he said to Maximus "I follow orders". Between men, this equals apology. Maximus was a great general who knew his man. Why should he hate?
@Velastine I see what you mean, but Quintus chose to betray Maximus and become the praetorian leader which unfortunately also meant that he had to execute both Maximus and his family. He might have felt remorse afterwards, but how was Maximus supposed to know? And even if he did, its very unlikely that he would forgive him. When they are in the arena and maximus has taken off his helmet etc. you can see him make a greeting to Quintus as if he already had forgiven him.it makes no sense
@sondre2409 I bet Maximus and Quintus did not agree on the death of the old emperor. Maximus was told directly by the emperor that "Commodus is not a moral man". So he concluded quickly that Commodus killed the emperor. Quintus did not have this information. Both of them were soldiers, and the important thing was "loyalty". So Maximus was loyal to Marcus Aurelius and Quintus was loyal to Commodus. Then Maximus hated Commodus, the murderer, but not Quintus, a man doing his job.
@Velastine And... Maximus did not hate, but he certainly wasn't all happy with Quintus. He said "Nothing happens to anyone that he is not fitted by nature to bear." As friends, Maximus grumbled and also felt helpless. As a senior, Maximus was being sarcastic and he somewhat lectured Quintus on his passiveness, for not standing on the right side , not even after he saw with his own eyes Commodus's brutality.
@sondre2409 because the writers decided to give the character maximus that weakness. those who follow orders blindly are the cause of all the problems in the world today and must be eliminated
I love how the fight scene at the end just stops for a few moments after Commodus is disarmed. It almost feels like the fight isn't going to end, it creates such tension.
@PianoPlayer1271 Mine as well. That shot when they're rising on the platform to the arena was amazing, what with the falling petals and the sun shining through the opening gates.
@jmehd15 maybe because hes father didnt love him enough, and that commodus wasnt able to carry the crown as his father would of, just my apinion, sory bad english
@viktor4551 if u can write meaningful sentences, u should write "sorry" and "his" and "opinion" truely.in conclusion, u're tried to be funny and failed sorry sonny.
"Maximus. Maximus. Maximus. They call for you. The general who became a slave. The slave who became a gladiator. The gladiator who defied an emperor. Striking story really. Now the people want to know how the story ends. Only a famous death will do. And what could be more glorious than to fight the emperor himself in the great arena?"
"You would fight me?"
"Why not, do you think I'm afraid?"
"I think you've been afraid all your life."
"Unlike Maximus the Invincible, who knows no fear?"
"I knew a man who once said 'Death smiles at us all. All a man can do is smile back.'"
"I wonder, did your friend smile at his own death?"
"You must know he was your father."
"You loved my father I know. But so did I. That makes us like brothers, doesn't it? .....Smile for me now brother."
The scene itself is the most amazing one in the entire movie. It's where everyone begins to understand that Commodus was like a slave to everyone because of his cowardice.
@shimatetsuo2019 I disagree. Nero was very self assured, he didn't grapple with insecurities, he truly believed he was a fantastic singer and actor. Commodus, meanwhile, both in Gladiator and in real life was constantly tortured by feelings of inadequacy. It's why he performed in the arena, why he was so paranoid, why he surrounded himself with sycophants who would tell him how great he was.
Nero was depraved and delusional. Commodus was just a sad, sick little boy posing as the Emperor.
I only just found out that Joaquin Phoenix is the brother of the late River Phoenix. And both of them play parts in my 2 favourite films ever, gladiator and stand by me
If you're very good, tomorrow night I'll tell you the story of Emperor Claudius. He was betrayed, by those closest to him ... by his own blood ... they whispered in dark corners and went out late at night and conspired and conspired. But the Emperor knew they were up to something. He knew they were busy little bees. And one night he sat down with one of them and he looked at her and he said, "Tell me what you have been doing, busy little bee, or I shall strike down those dearest to you"
life nowadays....we are so busy with our jobs our computers our phones.....this planet is an old place.....take a step back in time.....what was life like in roman times. humans been around for a long time....what have we gained, what have we lost.....where is this going.....where are we going
KingGopherNuts - please read not Mesalina, but "like" her, as a personal trait; we now about years, centuries and families, sure. But I pointed that Commod s mother behavior l eft so to call perverse traits on her son ( 180 - 193.A.D. Emperor). /Look for comments by arenadri7 = @dajnanezic/
I would love to condemn commodus...but the real crime perhaps was that of the father. The father who ignored him. the father who could not see the best in his son. The father whose task as Emperor restricted him from fulfilling his task as father, as friend, as confidant, as protector to his only son...Commodus' character is tragic, monstrous and compelling. When he enters the room, he commands it. But only because we realize that in that situation we would have acted in the same manner.
@alexgomez83 yeah i agree. i was kinda thinking that commodus had good reason to kill a man who was trying to take his birth right, even if it was his own dad......having said that i couldnt really understand why he kept trying to get in his sisters pants though.....lol.
As Roman history- M.Aurelius wife, mother of Commodus brought much evil and genes - on all battles with husband was likely Mesalina - in soldiers tents - so her son had incest with his other sisters - (from mother to son genes?) - here look for "traditional behaving"... Could he be a moral man? Arenadri5
@dajnanezic Messalina was over a century before the birth of Commodus. That, and the Julio-Claudian dynasty was almost completely wiped out in the aftermath of Nero's reign by the senators. However, they still left descendants. However, Commodus was NOT one of them.
Maximus. Maximus. Maximus. They call for you. The general who became a slave. The slave who became a gladiator. The gladiator who defied an emperor. A striking story. Now the people want to know how the story ends. Only a famous death will do. What could be more glorious than to challenge the emperor himself in the great arena.
@trilerkiler You would fight me? I think you've been afraid all your life.I knew a man once who said, death smiles at us all, all a man can do smile back :)
the line "am i not merciful" to his sister is perhaps the line that most gives me goosebumps and shivers out of all quotes in any film i have seen...and i've seen plenty :)
@DamianTheFarmer Agreed. The murder of Marcus Aurelius could be seen to be an abberation or a crime of passion, but it was that line that put him forever beyond the pale and made of him a monster.
And what of his mother? Shall they share a lover's fate, or shall i be merciful? Commodus the merciful... Lucius will stay with me now, and if his mother so much as looks at him in a manner that displeases me. He will die. If she decides to be noble and takes her own life, he will die. And as for you. You will love me as I love you. You will provide me an heir of pure blood so that Commodus and his progeny will rule for 1000 years....Am I not merciful?
And what of his mother? Shall they share a lover's fate, or shall i be merciful? Commodus the merciful... Lucius will stay with me now, and if his mother so much as looks at him in a manner that displeases me. He will die. If she decides to be noble and takes her own life, he will die. And as for you. Anyone else get goosebumps at 1:38? EVERY time i hear it i feel the worst for Maximus. He wants to follow a promise he gave to his emporer, hes about to become the top leading person in the world. Then a villian kills his family, because HE was offered to become the emporer. Well done Hans Zimmer.
Whenever I hear this piece, it brings to mind a duel between good and evil. It also reminds me of this Gladiator scene near the end:
Commodus: The general who became a slave. The slave who became a gladiator. The gladiator who defied an emperor. Striking story! But now, the people want to know how the story ends. Only a famous death will do. And what could be more glorious than to challenge the Emperor himself in the great arena?
He was always alone and person has veritably liked (loved) him , except her sister, on whom he broadcast his love, a love to take to the extreme, and in the incest!!!
We would have been able to become all Commodus of drawers in power if we had never been loved and had lived in a permanent solitude
I feel sorry for Commodus of drawers all the same, Commodus of drawers is one of rare nasty of the Cinema which goes out of the Manicheanism.
He is finally also a victim as Maximus, because the resentment which he has to Maximus shows that all its life, it was sad and deprived not to have been liked(loved) of by his father Marc Aurèle and that her mother looked absent or dead.
@Ipodmoeilijk well the whole movie was amazing and is one of my favorites but Commodus didnt kill Marcus Aurelius (his father) it was just Hollywood imagination but a lot things was real for example hes tyranny etc.
And if that mother looks at me, would be it only in a way which does not suit to me, he will die, if it decides to have a noble attitude, and end in his(her, its) days, he will die
As for you, you are going to love me as I loved you, you are going to give me a heir of pure blood so that Chest of drawers and his descent reigns during thousands years
Am not I of a big leniency? AM NOT I OF A BIG LENIENCY?
I love this...you can feel every bit of anger in Emperor Commodus`s body when he figures out Maximus is greater than him and he is winning the hearts of the crowd..of his people.
and as for you, you will love me as I loved you. you will bear me a son, of pure blood so that Commodus and his progeny will reign for a thousand years. am i not merciful?
I listen this song when I feel alone and sad, commodus is my favourite character in this movie, joaquim phoenix is brilliant and this song too, that's so dark...

I love how Commodus' sanity just goes on a steady decline from the beginning of the film, to the end.
By the end of the movie, he loses all mental stability.
When dictators are insane, especially those like Commodus with inferiority complex, woe to their people.
He was Nero, all over again.
And this song tells that tale.

2:12 gives me goosebumps every time. Joaquin Phoenix absolutely deserved an Oscar for his performance.

Maximus: You would fight me?

He was always alone and person has veritably liked (loved) him , except her sister, on whom he broadcast his love, a love to take to the extreme, and in the incest!!!
We would have been able to become all Commodus of drawers in power if we had never been loved and had lived in a permanent solitude
51Totom 1 year ago 4
@51Totom Agree, only an exceptional person could have overcome that circunstances.
Alfarouc17 1 year ago
I feel sorry for Commodus of drawers all the same, Commodus of drawers is one of rare nasty of the Cinema which goes out of the Manicheanism.
He is finally also a victim as Maximus, because the resentment which he has to Maximus shows that all its life, it was sad and deprived not to have been liked(loved) of by his father Marc Aurèle and that her mother looked absent or dead.
51Totom 1 year ago 4
@51Totom
But still, Commodus killled at least two innecent persons. Maximus' wife and son.
He should know the wasn't good enough to rule Rome and he totally overeacted.
But, thats the problem with princes and kings, they think they can do anything they want
Ipodmoeilijk 11 months ago
@Ipodmoeilijk well the whole movie was amazing and is one of my favorites but Commodus didnt kill Marcus Aurelius (his father) it was just Hollywood imagination but a lot things was real for example hes tyranny etc.

Lucius is going to stay with me now
And if that mother looks at me, would be it only in a way which does not suit to me, he will die, if it decides to have a noble attitude, and end in his(her, its) days, he will die
