I personally prefered them to be simple when I was a kid and I would say that would be true today however what annoys me is when the things are so simple they lack articulation
Simplistic is better IMHO more play value. So many of the newer TFS take forever to transform and if I was kid wouldnt bother playing with. When it takes 20 mins to change it you lose play time.
I like the animated toys so I can quick convert, my alternators and masterpiece figures stay in robot mode and I've transformed them precisely once. I have never transformed Masterpiece Megatron or Prime, my cousin transformed starscream which didn't see so bad. I don't mind MP Grimlock.
Transformers that don;t transform aren't worth my time.
That's why I loved G1. Their transformations were natural and, well, easy. Animated reminds me of G1 they are just intuitive. Alternators and masterpieces are great, but my god they can take forever to get from one mode to another.
Complicated or simple. I enjoy all transformations, that's why non-transforming transformers piss me off. WTF is the point of calling something a transformer if it can't transform??? Robot replicas, RPM's, and other toys that do not transform should NOT be given the title "Transformers" on the box/card. (Rovoltech excluded because they are not labeled as transformers, thank you Japan.) Summarily, if it can't transform it's not a transformer.
Another interesting concept to think about. I personally hate difficult Transformers, mainly because I get severely ticked off when I can't figure out how to get the darn thing to transform.
I actually feel that MP Prime gets it *just* right. There's nice big clicky bits, like the legs and arms unpopping, and nice intricate bits, like the hands and feet.
Really, his chest is the only bad bit. Pisses me off at times.
