Further, Titanic was not racing to beat a record. It was impossible for her to best Lusitania or Mauritania. At worst, Smith is guilty of going too fast, but that was common procedure for North Atlantic captains in such a situation.
@streepmeryl ... I hate arrogant idiots like anna, Captain Smith dared not to save his own life when his ship sank, he put others in front of himself.
@errerer94 Actually, it was an unwritten rule and tradition that the Captain goes down with his ship. He very well could have gotten on a boat, but that would have been highly dishonorable and he would've faced lifetime of scorn, like Mr. Ismay did.
@coolweirdo34 captain smith was to blame he had overall control of the ship and he still kept full ahead when he was aware of ice he only went down with the ship because it was part of his duty as ships master
@TheTraveltube actually the titanic sank because of the rest of the crew ignoring the radio calls...by the time heard the call it was 6 minutes to late...also if they hadnt of tried to turn around the ship would of been able to be saved
He retired because he sucked at sailing the effing ship.

Of course. Any ship that has enough lifeboats for less than half the crew and passengers must be safe.
