  • DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!!!

I just tried this method to repair my hyperion 5c battery, in my bedroom. As soon as I poked the hole it was arcing, like a tiny ring of fire, as I was running outside, (down the staircase) with the lipo in my hand it expanded very rapidly. All hell was breaking loose, I threw the battery 20ft through an open window into my condo parking lot. At this point the battery was out of control, smoke and flames everywhere. How bad is lipo smoke? DO NOT TRY AT HOME!

  • @raganriley you must have poked a deep hole!

  • Hi I did the same, but I find 1 or 2 Drop of water not more then 2, What I suppose to do ??

    Should I bin it ?

I did it long time ago, and after that liquid come out, I taped it with its own original outer cover sticker.

and this battry is perfectly working fine ..

  • @gauravbisht2000 If it is still working just use it mate. I still use the ones I repaired years ago, I only lost a few due to massive crash damage.

  • whats the cause why lipoly bloat??

  • Yeahh, it´s amazing! It really works? staring like an idiot - you´re master (-:

  • wouldnt puting the lipo in salt water cause it to short

  • @TRAXXAS1924 and thats why is says and throw it, out why do people never read these days

  • any follow up on this?

did it work? how long for? are you still using it?

    Thanks

  • @12345Bazzoka Hi Mate, yeah some of the batteries are still going strong, some were killed outright in crashes. I found that a more flexible glue worked better than super glue. None of the repaired batteries exploded on use.

  • hi there, seems to me you're an expert on lipo's... I have a small 3s (850mah) that I kept connected and thus is now discharged all the way. How could I get new life in to it?

  • @WillemDeLeeuw1 try charging it at 0.2A without the balance lead in, charge as nicd or nimh. You may get enough voltage in the cells to charge as lipo.

  • Loco???

  • @gibmirschnell

    sin duda alguna... :)))

  • Great video. I use to own about 30 LiPo batteries and five chargers back when 40 amp quick chargers were not available. Now I only need two lipos and one CellPro Powerlab 8 Balance charger. The new Thunder Power 65c 6c charge rate can quick charge and have a 2 year warranty.

  • at 2:35 he now owns one big suitcase bomb!!!!

  • @defysquirrel189 lol I store all the batteries at 3.8v/cell and in a cool place, no fires yet (c:

  • @GaryGraham66 oops sorry but it looks like you got alot of batteries there.how much does all those batteries cost?

  • @defysquirrel189 I have about 70 batteries some I've had for more than 3 years and are still going strong (even the repaired ones). Batteries are getting cheaper and you can get some good deals from HK. God knows how much I spent on them (c:

  • @defysquirrel189 $100,000 give or take.

  • the puffing is the cell actually shorting itself the gas is h2 gas and when this happens the cell is on the brink of failure you may think its fixed but you lost the material from the battery. its like a lead acid battery when you take the acid out it reduces the potential of the battery. in your case it may still work but there is a possibility of it happening again the battery proll was a falure from the start i would save the effort and buy another battery. who wants there plane/heli to burn

  • @badboyazza2009 all batteries working fine, over 100 cycles and not a hitch.

  • hi the aliy case you are using would melt if one of your batterys went wrong and went on fire ,,,,you need a metal box not aloy i had a very old hard drive which i took apart it was like a door step and it was a heavy thick case ,,one of my lipos caught on fire and melted the case so have a think about changing your case as you are sitting on a dangerous thing with all those batterys in your case i know you most probebly think im wrong but have a think about the temperature

  • @rabone1963 Thanks for the concern, I store these batteries in the case only after a few hours cooling off period and they are never stored at more than 60% charge. When charged for use they are in a harder case with TX etc. Over four years flying and over 70 batteries and none have burst into flames yet (c:

  • that's quite a collection of lipos you got there. imagine a fire! lol good video, not sure if it's a good Idea though

  • dude at 2:36 what would happen if one battery exploded in that big case. all of your lipos would be dead!

  • when my lipo gets puff i put it in the freezer haha harden that lipo back to how i got it

  • i have done something similar already, haha but i was soooooo nervous i was like, crap i hope it doesnt explode!

  • Thank you for doing stupid things so i dont have to!

  • @dickiesmon no problem, I have over 50 cycles on these batteries and no problems.

  • @GaryGraham66 Heh, well sorry. I've just seen funny things happen with my LiPo's before, so I'm hesitant about home repairs.

  • @dickiesmon check out my eros plane crash, a 5200Mah 22c 6S1p battery smashed, no smoke no explosion it is now a 4s1p battery, the battery was split and crushed, the batteries you see "exploding" are under a massive over charge.

  • man... i have to tell you.. i alway pierce Lipo cell... .. WHEN I WANT THEM TO CATCH FIRE!!! to dispose .........NO ONE should pierce lipos. Acctually, if its puffed, IT IS TRASH. Lithium is higly reactive even to air.......... if you piece a litte more and contact the internal material it catch fire!

  • may he RIP

  • to it has to be discharge ?

  • well after doing this to the 2 slightly puffed flightmax 5000mah 2s i decided to try them out with no holding back e-revo brushess timming advance up punch control of and i ran hard for about 35min on my street they both came out cool to touch and both are charging and have taken L1 took 3588mah and L2 took 3963mah and no puff at all Thank-you very much for this it was easy and saved to lipo's i always watch my stuff so that would never be an issue THANKS-Dan

  • hi there i just did this on 2 slightly puffed 2s flightmaxx whats wierd about the to is they dont puff during charge and they dont stay puffed after charging only alittle puff after a run and also alittle warm i hope this works for them i am buying more but hate to ditch them they have only had 30 cycles this happined after a run with a bad motor in another rc

  • i have a small dvd player that has lipo batterys in it and i did this TWICE and nothing happened still works great no worries it will only explode if you ram something into the cell and make the plates/sheets of metal touch inside, which will ignite the chemicals inside the battery

  • too dangerous

  • i would be EXTREMELY hesitant about this to be honest - its highly dangerous to pierce a lipo pack (pack has possibility to explode as a result). Not worth the risk in my opinion. If its a new pack, get it replaced.

Interesting job though and nice vid.

  • Have you seen what it actually takes to get a lipo to explode? it is not dangerous to pierce a cell if done in the right place. Obviously if you ram a metal object through all the cells you will short it out and cause a lot of smoke and maybe a fire.

  • just to add i posted a video, please have a nose when you got a spare minute and let me know any adice you have, cheers.

  • Gary,

thanks for doing this vid, ive just noticed one of my nearly new lipos has puffed slightly and it appears to have some sort of liquid in it, do you know what this is please ?

im a bit pissed off about it because the lipo is an outrage XP25 11.1volt, it cost me £40 and i went for it because i thought it would be the best quality :(, i bought 2 of them and have only used them about 10 times and the other pack seems fine. they were charged at 1 amp on a bantam BC6 (will post a video soon)

  • @armolite Thi is called LITHIUM POLYMER,.If there new take them to your hobby shop to get replaced

  • Thanks for the ideea

I have also 3 puffed batteries which are performing well, only they don't fit well in their places, and I want to do this surgery.

How is your deflated battery doing?

  • So far they have not exploded and have completed quite a few cycles, I do use a strict flight time on them so not to work them too hard.

  • cool , cheers

  • hi whens the battery rebuild video coming? thanks

  • As soon as I get time and a couple of identical batteries the need repairing. (c:

  • just done this to a 3cell 11.1 algin lipo that as slightly puffed but shows no other signs of damage(never has been came pre puffed):)

looks good so far will let you know the outcome.

    hows yours?

    jason

  • I did a charger bench test on one, discharge, charge, storage, charge, discharge, charge, discharge and all seems fine. I may use a more flexible glue next time but I think it sucked some of the CA glue into the hole when I applied it so it should be fine.

  • watching with interest big fella , be careful you know they love to go pop. Normally i leave em and use them as packs for my transmitter.

  • you got too many lipo's man :) GIMMI SUM :D lol

  • nice vid gary.

agree also, obviously we all know the dangers of lipos but..

have had a few battery's that have shown very light puffing, and now just keep an eye on them and use for test set ups etc, like your fix above will be interesting to see how it goes.

    mine r fine so far

  • Yeah I started to think about it as I've got a few old mystery 2400's I use with my King 2 they have grown in width but not puffed, they are solid.

I think the puffing is gas produced in the battery, left unchecked this expands pulling the ends of the battery tight, this in turn separates the layers of the cell causing cell damage, but by then it's too late for the cell. I'll run some repeated flight & recharge tests and post the results as soon as I have them.

  • I could of done with this video last summer lol,but at least i know now and looking forward to the next battery video, thanks for shearing mate,5*

  • I've had a few batteries that have had dead cells, some I have been able to bring back to life by push charging, others I have repaired by taking out the dead cells and replacing them.

If you try it be careful and take your time.
