Jane Wyman (pronounced: "Why-Men"). She was nominated in the 1955 Best Actress Award Academy: the others being Dorothy Dandridge; Judy Garland; Audrey Hepburn; and Grace Kelly. For the record...she didn't win...Grace Kelly did for her role in 1954's "The Country Girl". I like Dandridge and Hepburn, and I personally would've like to have heard Dandridge won, because she was the first African-American actress to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Leading Actress.
Amen, jimaroo! If the feminists were really about uplifting women, they would be trumpeting the new Margaret Thatcher movie. You may disagree with her politics, but what a role model for what a woman can achieve in politics.
The feminists didn't like that we stood to honor the dignity of a woman, to salute her special role in society and in the family, to treat her her in a way that honored our own mother and wife. So we did what they wanted and women are now treated like dirt, disrespected and used as objects. Congratulations feminists... you have done more harm to women than all the sexist pigs in history.
For all other FALCON CREST fans out there. There will be a 30th Anniversary Reunion on December 3, 2011. The prices are reasonable and there is even a tribute planned for Jane Wyman. You can register at: w w w . vintagetvreunions . com / falconcrest for more info and to register. The ticket price seems quite reasonable and several stars are already coming.
@rogernma - While you are correct in saying Wyman was the first Mrs. Reagan, it is not correct to say Reagan divorced Wyman. She initiated the divorce in 1948 ... Reagan was totally caught off-guard and did not want to dissolve the marriage at all. Reagan didn't even meet Nancy David until 1949 ... the marriage was totally over before Reagan and Davis ever met.
One of the all time great actresses. Ms. Wyman was terrific in the Yearling, Miracle in the Rain, Pollyanna and her Oscar winning role in Johnny Belinda.
Beautiful lady with baby doll looks--no disrespect intended, but her 1948 academy award win is astonishing in retrospect. There's just no real "performance" there. Would love insight into behind the scenes politics. No desire to choose between Joan or Olivia? Ongoing negativity toward Stanwyck? An indication of Ronnie power? Who has the 411????
@spagandtuna Academy voters in 1948 were probably impressed that she played a deaf-mute, and that she'd made the transition from blonde cutie to serious actress. Incidentally, there was no "Olivia vs. Joan" in '48 ... Joan was not nominated. The other nominees were Barbara Stanwyck, Irene Dunne, and Ingrid Bergman. Remember, too, it's a five-way race. You don't need to win a majority of the votes, just more than anyone else. You can win an Oscar® with as few as 20% of the votes, plus one.
@libearian Thanks for the correction. I still don't see a real "performance" here but acknowldge there is often, for whatever reason, a rewarding of how performers address disabilities. Your assumption may also be correct; however, there are also other factors such as how the might involve politics and how studios lobby in order to divide up the awards.
Um, I said 'shortest'. She said, ''I won this playing a deaf mute so I'll use that as a learning lesson and say nothing but thank you' or something like that.
Jane and Miss Arlene's shoulders looked so beautiful here. Why don't more designers accent women's shoulders nowadays? Jane should have received some sort of special award for having to live with ronald reagan, poor thing. I loved her in 'Magnificent Obsession' and I think she's on record as giving the shortest Oscar acceptance speech in history. What a charming woman.
@chucknyc123 I know she implied Ronnie never stopped talking. She said if you asked him what time it was he'd tell you how the watch was made. I guess Nancy was okay with that or he did not talk so much with her.
It's true they didnt show of their panties (sure there was playboy) and get drunk falling outa clubs(if they did they hid it atleast and ladies (as my grandma tells it) had respect for themselves and didnt sware or spit on the streets they have (gils and boys) everything showing (wow i sound 80 not 21!) lol im not saying everyone but alot of people -im not saying like dress sense or being who u r im saying respect for themselves and others xoxo catt
...Huh? ...sorry but I don't understand what it is you're trying to say.
...and I was there. I don' t have to ask my grandma. :) There isn't much I miss, but I do miss these shows of respect for eachother, as they are shown in this video. Your response mentioning "undies" shows the lack of respect that I am talking about...sorry to say. Yes, people are always people but the social mores were different then. We could use some of it again.
@mysticpluck8 How come they did that? Was it just part of Victorian formalism or did it have some kind of purpose? I think stuff like that changed due to the women's movement when women didn't like to be treated like inferiors, so maybe it implied something? (like women are weaker?)
@TheTubePortal .. To show honor, respect. A gift, in some ways. "You are a woman and I honor that". That's all.. very nice IMHO. Respectful. A strong custom. But yes, done away with for Women's Lib. I"m for women's rights, don't get me wrong. But feminists thought standing was too differentiating. They wanted us as equal. We are "equal" since both human beings! Isn't that enough?! We have two sexes!!! ...Lovely thing that!
A couple of days after Norbert posted this (much thanx), the Disney production of David Swift's "Polyanna" appeared on TCM. Jane Wyman did a great job and looked wonderful, too.
Originally, Polyanna lost money, and I cannot figure out why. It seems monumental today compared with some of the things that Hollywood springs on us now. It is a great movie -- actually startling in some places.
went and bought the movie pollyanna last year -- tv and the movies can sucker punch you with such horror!!! my friends think i am insane owning so many sweet movies -- and old tv shows -- but you know -- ya gotta do what you gotta do -- so you don't go insane!!!
Jane Wyman appears to have been in a number of musicals in bit parts (dancer/chorus girl) early on in her career, including: Rumba, George White's 1935 Scandals, King of Burlesque and Cain and Mabel. She did appear in "Just for You" in 1952 (described as a musical at IMDB), but I'm pretty sure she didn't appear singing and dancing in a brief costume in that.
Yes sir! Earlier in the program they made jokes about Miss Hathaway of 1960. AF was accident prone and appeared in an eye patch not once not twice not three times but FOUR times from 1953 to 1960. This time she somehow scratched her cornea.
In some parallel universe, Jane Wyman became first lady and Nancy Davis went to Falcon Crest. But Seriously Folks --
I find this 1960 episode interesting in that Dorothy Kilgallen solved every sequence. It was also interesting for the first clip: the contestant was a tall pretty female justice of the peace from some village somewhere in Arkansas. Finally Kilgallen solved it, but for most of that sequence the panel was delightfully drifting out to sea. thanx for posting.
And, according to Ann Sheridan, Ms. Wyman could cook TOO! She just had it all. I love Miss Jane Wyman!

Folks, get your facts straight. Reagan did not divorce Jane to marry Nancy. That is common knowledge!

The lace top on her gown is lovely. Sexy, but not overt.

Before womyns lib. Now, standing for a female is seen as degrading and will get you hit with a lawsuit.

@mysticpluck8 Yeah it was easyer days. When you saw that a man was a man and a woman was a woman for exaple. Not like: It that a guy... or a woman?
And thoes time when you had to be a genleman (if you were a man).
Haha I would be a woman who never weared pants, just dresses lol xD
