apparently through china's standard historical revisionism, the "official" meaning of the flag has been changed similarly to what you describe. but historically, the large star represents the chinese ('han') race and the four small stars represent the mongol, manchu, tibetan, and muslim (both hui and uyghur? i'm unclear on this one) 'races'. the meaning goes back to pre-communist ideas of 'one china' and was simply copied by the communists.

There were actually 6 million Tibetans living in Tibet in 1959. The Tibetans lost their lives not always due to outright killing by Red Guards, but also through famine.
