@captaincomputa, the song wasn't/isn't about Ian, being that U2 had already been performing the song with the given lyrics since 1979. But in part due to his passing, since the song dealt with the issue of suicide, in addition to being a great composition(particularly this rendition), they made this the first recording of the Boy album sessions along with Things to Make and Do, giving Steve Lillywhite a good test-out. Kapeesh?
If there was a time machine and I could pick any time and place (and could be any age), I'd be a 21 year old at this concert... I was probably like 5 or something when Bono and the boys played here, lol; I don't think there's any band now at this time that can capture a crowd like U2 did and still does.
Naw, the song was already lyricized and recorded in the original form before he offed himself. But it was the first song they re-recorded, in this form, for the Boy album after his death.
The song wasn't in tribute to him, the recording of this rendition being the first single after his death was in tribute to his passing, but U2 had already been performing this song with the same lyrics since late 1979, and did an earlier more simple recording before his death.
this isnt really live. its lip synced

The first U2 song I ever heard. We've both come a long way since then. Well they have anyway, I've just got older.

Great vintage video-- looks to be from the Lexilip Castle gig on July 27, 1980. Wish the audio was really live!
