Has anyone else noticed that ALL the GREATEST Adventurers, Travellers and Explorers were/are....BRITISH.....Its in our history, culture, blood and the very sinue that makes us !!
SANDY IRWIN WAS ONLY 22 YEARS OLD -HE HAD NEVER CLIMBED AT DEATH ZONE ALTITUDE. THE CHINESE FOUND HID BODY IN 1969 A FEW HUNDRED METERS FROM THE SUMMIT. GEORGE MALLORY HAD STAYED WITH HIM WHILE HE DIED. BECAUSE HE WAITED AFTER MALLORY SUMMITED HE HAD TO TRY TO CLIMB DOWN IN THE DARK HE DIED WHEN HE FELL DOWN THE MOUNTAIN SIDE.
@mshanks4 That's not entirely accurate. Sandy Irvine's body has never been found and no-one knows if Mallory actually summited as the clouds came in and covered them from view from the team at advance base camp. I would like to think that he did manage to summit but there is no way of knowing for sure. Mallory's body was found in 1999, with the photograph of his wife that he promised to leave on the summit missing, sparking speculation that he was in fact the first man to summit Everest.
Is it really important to know whether Mallory successfully summited? Mountaineering is all about process. Imagine the endeavor he took to even reach the 8000m level. The equipment and clothing they had were literally useless. What makes the whole story so amazing is the human spirit that powers the trying in the face of tremendous difficulty. Mallory and Irvine deserve great respects for their pioneering thoughts and for their persistence of pursuing an ideal.

i thought the programme and the whole story is amazing.
the narration, music, re-enactment. all top notch.
the story itself amazing...
