I don't want to sound like a noob but I mainly practice on an electric drum set and I'm able to do songs by bands like August Burns Red a full way through but I get tired and when I try to do the flying fingers style I get the speed like no problem but it sounds low and like there's no power behind it. Do you think this is because the electric head doesn't have the pop that a real snare head does or does this mean I have a lot of practice to go?
Don't neglect your pinky! Excluding your thumb it's attached to the strongest muscle in your hand. It'll boost your speed and stamina heaps with practice.
Sorry spikey you're a very long time too late .. I was a small kid when i saw this guy play.. 1 year before he died.. Legendry drummer... Check out his left hand trad grip ... This was 30 yrs ago.. Buddy rich west side story.. Thanks for a bit of an update but you cant reinvent the wheel..
This is retarded. I can't take you seriously with the tigger outfit. WTF. And you don't have too only use flying fingers. And you can use your wrist. Its not impossible. Lol. I use the moeller technique when I blast. Its not wrong. Lol. Actually flying fingers has less power than incorporating the wrist. Or upper arm. I'll give a 3 star. Lol
Hey, I've got a question. When you hit a surface, the rebound seems to be much higher than when I do it, So I automatically start using my wrist. Maybe I'm somehow blocking my rebound?
i cant get it going atall with my left hand :( ive got my right pretty good but with my left it just feels like theres nothing to push back with my bottom fingers. I guess it kinda like playing a kick with no spring tension - solutions?
@benoitdrums1996 this is such a late reply but what i did was just sit down for like an hour holding my wrist of my left hand with my right to keep it still and doing it with just 2 fingers then started using all my fingers - i can do it proper fast on pillows now so on my kit is now really easy
Why the fuck are you guys criticising him? When it comes to this stuff it's about how YOU do it,sure there are techniques and whatnot but it's about what works for you and feels comfortable and stuff,if it doesn't work for you,try something else, don't blame someone who tried their best to help you
i disagree with you alot on this video wrist is way better just as fast and it is way more intense...and yeah you can use arm wrist technique watch the video called kai hahto perfection live close up
Also, spikey, you're grip is too tight. It puts a lot of unneeded strain on your forearm. Your forefinger should be a lot looser. you don't need to pinch on the stick so much. The stick should be floating in your hand. You'll get a much more relaxed and economic stroke if you let the stick relax on your middle finger or the back of the hand. Moeller's little finger grip gives a lot more power and stamina to your strokes while also maximizing the bounce. look up some Gary Novak, his grip is nice.
i tried this but i didnt get much power, so i found speed and power by doing this and increasing power with my wrist but you need to practice it every day or else you'll loose it :(
If I'm working on strengthening for this, where would I feel it (wrist, hand, arm, etc)? Also, how does this work on things with less rebound (for example, off the edge of a cymbal)?
there's no such thing as "flying fingers technique." It's just a made-up name metal drummers use to pretend that they developed it. It's just regular finger technique for matched grip. It's nothing special. It's really basic and one of the first things you learn as a drummer. If you didn't know you could use your fingers to drum you really need to start over or find a teacher. You want a good dvd, get Jojo mayer's secret weapons for the modern drummer. Probably the best technique vid available
@coxkr6 it is not a beggining thing dude my brother did drum lessons and not ONCE was ANYTHING like this mentioned looks like YOU need to find a teacher.
@zeroskater601 you're telling me your brother's drum teacher never taught him how to use his fingers or the natural rebound of the stick to make his strokes? either your brother missed the point completely or he needs to find a better teacher. If you read any of moeller, gladstone, or chapin's work you'd know that the whole point of drumming is controlling the rebound. . Flying fingers is just old freehand technique repackaged by a bunch of morons who think they invented something.
@coxkr6 They have a different name for it because this is a blast beat technique, not a general drumming technique. I would think that a death metal drummer would be more proficient at this than say a jazz drummer because this is a specific area of focus. The thing that makes this different is that every single hit has to be defined and consistent and the drummer needs to get a lot of power from one hand.
@Beholdthesharktopus It's not a blast beat technique. it's a basic technique that can be applied to blast beats, but was not designed specifically for blast beats. The power and consistency of the stroke is up to the drummer and does not change the name of the technique. I can play a ride triplet as hard or soft as i want, it's still a triplet. Besides it sounds like shit. So boring and one dimensional. "flying fingers technique" sounds like a 10 y/o made it up. It's a french grip. simple.
@SonsofLiberty740 of course, that's how you play drums. I don't know how anyone can play without using their fingers. It's basic drum technique that all drummers learn, not just in marching band but in all spheres of drumming. It's not a special technique, it's how you play drums. Ya, you use your wrists for accents but you're always using your fingers. derek and george use their fingers all the time. their wrists move but theuir fingers are doing most of the work.
@MisterWhat666 Its just another technique brosif... it works better that way for them, they go with it. Other people can flying finger technique it better.
I never knew this trick had a name. I'm a huge fan of Buddy Rich, and this technique was apparently one of his secret weapons. I learned the method from him.
@TheDustyspears It's not a secret BR technique. It's using your fingers in the french grip, which is how you play the french anyway. it's been around for ages. If you just found out that your fingers can be used for drumming then you need to take a step back and start with the basics. all the metalheads did was use it in a blast beat and attach some stupid name to it. I can play the french as loud and fast as i want, it's still a french grip. It's just using fingers. plain and simple
hey can you help me out spikeydrummer? when i use the flying fingers technique my index fingers keeps being lazy and come off the stick. and exercises to help?
my stick only boucnes up about 1 - 2 inches i think ig to the technique right but there like no "fan" shape. my snare head is tight. Any help would be appreciated so much
@boyzinbrown if you aren't getting a lot of rebound then it is probably time to replace your snare drum head, it its fairly new and you dont get a lot of rebound then you most likely just need to buy a higher quailty one
On the right hand I can do the "flying finger technique" from 130 - 230 bpm... but with the left hand, I can only do it from 230bpm on. I don't know, I tried hours and hours but I cannot get it to work on the left hand with lower speed. Sound wierd, right? Well actually, I had my left arm broken a few years ago. When I was then practicing higher speeds, my left hand started "trumbeling". I learned to controll it very well, but as I said, I cannot get it to work on lower speed. please help. thx
@EpicSkatinDrummerGuy both, that way you're not stuck with only using one side for cymbals etc. like if you use your right hand you can use your other hand for the hi hat and other cymbals on that side of the kit, if you use your left hand you can do all the rest of the kit and yeah. i cant do blasts with my left hand, i'm currently working on improving my speed with my right hand and working on starting with my left. so yeah i'd say try both
1. If u put the stick in between ur pointer and middle finger and curl ur fingers into a fist u get good bounce but also some blisters
2. can u do it with ur left hand too? i learned this technique on my right hand with out knowing what it was called or that there was vids on youtube and on my left hand i use my fingers and my wrist to get speed
the part i'm having much problem is holding it. i cant seem 2 get a good grip on it with my finger and thunb. then when i try pushing its hurting my fingers
@BlackVyprrTBW i know it sucks so bad :( i was thinking of geting like a roland mesh head snare but at 260 cash... it way expensive ill just stick with my concrete snare for now
LOL. Flying fingers technique? Who came up with that term? It's just finger technique. I think the "actual" flying fingers technique is a valving technique, not just simple finger drumming. It's funny to see people pretend like they've come up with a new technique and give it a new label, even though the technique has been around for over 50 years. Not saying the tigger guy did it, but whoever either misinterpreted the technique or repackaged it thinking he'd get brownie points.
dude thanx for the lesson this shit actualy worked .. iv gotten faster with my blast beats now n like wen i look at my drumstix flying im like shit lol
thANX DUDE UR AWSUM .. HOPE FULLY U COME UP WITH NEW VIDS SOON LOL
ive been trying this for a while now and i seem to have it with my right hand, but it just wont work when i use my left. If i try this with my left hand, then my wrist starts to move as well and i just cant keep it as fingers only.
this is the only thing i do lol, when i started i didn't even know it was actually a technique lol. problem for me is that my arm starts to go to and i end up using my arm lol
@GRAWNasha Sure you did, loser. Anyway, Spikey, nice video, I love how you go about teaching in a Tiger suit fuckin' lul. I learned alot from this and am applying what I've been taught at band practice. Thank you much!
i have playing for 3 years and for 2 of those i have been doing the flying finger technique for everything and i had no problams with it because before that i was doing the german technique but i do the french as well because it uses different muscles giving the german muscles breaks and i can sit at high tempos for ages
I don't want to sound like a noob but I mainly practice on an electric drum set and I'm able to do songs by bands like August Burns Red a full way through but I get tired and when I try to do the flying fingers style I get the speed like no problem but it sounds low and like there's no power behind it. LOL. Flying fingers technique? Who came up with that term? It's just finger technique. I think the "actual" flying fingers technique is a valving technique, not just simple finger drumming. It's funny to see people pretend like they've come up with a new technique and give it a new label, even though the technique has been around for over 50 years. Not saying the tigger guy did it, but whoever either misinterpreted the technique or repackaged it thinking he'd get brownie points.

ive been trying this for a while now and i seem to have it with my right hand, but it just wont work when i use my left. If i try this with my left hand, then my wrist starts to move as well and i just cant keep it as fingers only.

I use my pinky finger on every other blast, its a little bit more power without my finger getting tired....

@GRAWNasha Sure you did, loser. Anyway, Spikey, nice video, I love how you go about teaching in a Tiger suit fuckin' lul. I learned alot from this and am applying what I've been taught at band practice. Thank you much!

@DrummingHobo
Wow, that was an unnecessary comment.
1. I did, I play Rock Band too much and that's how it developed over time.
2. There is a difference between being a 'loser' and having fun.

i have playing for 3 years and for 2 of those i have been doing the flying finger technique for everything and i had no problams with it because before that i was doing the german technique but i do the french as well because it uses different muscles giving the german muscles breaks and i can sit at high tempos for ages
