@2053tee Ummm....teachers only get PAID for the 9 months that they work.....and certain areas of teaching (i.e. athletics, music, art, etc.) don't even get full summers off AND they don't get paid for the extra work that they do....while some teachers are fortunate enough to get 9 months of pay spread out over 12 months, some have to stretch their money through the entire summer to make ends meet....I could go on but it probably wouldn't matter to a clueless non-educator.....GET A CLUE!!!!
when i went to choir a choir practice outside of school, i got a lift from my music teacher and on the way there we were just talkign and then she had this huge rant from nowhere about annoyign parents like this. it was unsexpected and she laughed and apologised after but it made me think...do i really want to be a teacher after all? O_O
I am teaching 4th & 5th grade violin in a summer enrichment program. On the second day of class, I had a parent get very irate at me that I will not be providing "left-handed" violin instruction. I very calmly told her that this does not exist. She kept going and going. She demanded it. Then, she went to complain to the program coordinator that I am not accommodating this request. I think I have been sucked into the xtranormal dimension...
I understand your frustration! Did you explain to her an instrument is set up for left or right handed playing? The sound post, bass bar, bridge, strings and rombout (if it is a 'cello) is placed on the opposite side than usual! And what about the problems of sitting next to a desk partner who's bow is always travelling in the opposite direction! Haa haa haa.........

Ironically, the only parent I had that was just a little like this, never made her kid practice, she was always taking me aside and telling me that, "my son isn't getting any better" I would respond, "how much does he practice per day", she would say "about 10 minutes", I would respond "try getting him to practice more", she would say, "he doesn't have time between hockey, school, this and karate, is there anything else you can do?" I would then say to myself, I am happy to take her money.
I like the part about schedule conflicts at age 7! Teaching woodwinds in greater Vancouver, I find that my Asian students, while usually very good about practising -- (and it shows) -- tend to have schedules (dance, sports, piano, Mandarin, etc etc etc) that would put a Fortune 500 CEO to shame. I try to keep their lessons lower pressure and more fun, as the kids need some time in their lives to actually be kids, IMHO, not RCM exam victims. Hey -- what is music for, anyway?
as a private music instructor, this video hits the nail on the head. dealing with the parents are as much of a pain in my man ass as dealing with the snot nosed midgets themselves. private teaching a.k.a. "celebrity rehab" gotta keep them comin' back.

Well I guess you’ve proved me right then. By the way I AM in the land of reality, I am an instrumental teacher of 35 years with as many years professional orchestral experience. Your attitude is stopping you from learning. Think about it. Be professional and develop your craft.
I taught drums to kids at a private school and I must admit that the school did a good job of keeping the parents at arms length. However, the private lessons I did were a nightmare with parents not paying on time, arriving late, cancelling on the day or insisting that I drove miles to their house to teach the kid...but with no extra pay to cover the fuel and time it took to get there. In the end I just cancelled the problem parents.
I've been in the profession for a couple of years, and I've only had a couple of cases of this...but this alone sums up the experiences of what we as teachers have to put up with from parents who do not know what they're taking about nor are they willing to listen to a professional
I had a mom who was convinced he daughter was a terrible music student and didn't want her in band because she didn't want her to not be on the honor roll. I let the kid take the class pass / fail and the she kept going and performed beautifully at her graduation. Did I get a thank you? Nope.
I am not a music teacher. I teach languages in Hong Kong. This is terrifyingly true in many cases. I even had the following conversation with an ex-student:
Louise: I really don't enjoy playing the piano but Mum says I have to get a Grade 4 distinction in my exam or she is going to punish me.
Me: Does your mother play the piano?
Louise: No, she hated it. She gave it up. My father asked her to let me give up the piano and she shouted at him for three hours.

I laughed so hard because IT'S ALL TRUE!!!! Depressing and hilarious all at the same time. "I would like her to play the Pink Panther. I played this piece on the flute when I was twelve and I was very good at it." I love it when parents think they're an expert in music because they listen to the classical radio station in the car or because they played the nose flute for 3 months in college.....
ahahahaha... "she is so talented"... ahhhh... parents living their lives vicariously through their children... freak me out... delusional, desperate... cut the kids a break and lighten up parents
This is first class. The only exaggeration is that this parent's attitude is a combination of viewpoints of about three or four parents whom I have personally known. It is just too toe-curlingly accurate for me to be able to laugh at it; but trust me, in one form or another I have had nearly all of this said to me verbatim over the past 20 years...brilliant!
Fucking lol, this is brilliant. I see my parents in both the teacher (mother is a music teacher, fur the luls) and in the very... enthusiastic parent.
WOW the cereal bar! AHAHAh I did this exact thing a few lunchtimes when i had to teach through lunch because of students who forgot either their instruments/lesson times and had to make em up. Classic!
I had a parent talk about their son like he was the reincarnation of Mozart and he was absolutely dreadful! This stuff is absolutely hilarious and so true!!
LOL. Even though he is indeed spineless, he has a few good zingers. "She is *special*", "Your flute-playing background must be where Felicity gets her brass-playing skills from," "The flute and cornet duo market is an untapped resource of musical fulfillment. I'm sure it will be superb." I love this and parts two and three.
Oh my god... I am a piano and guitar teacher and I can't tell you how sickeningly close to reality this video actually is. I swear, dealing with parents is often the most difficult, most annoying, most trying-to-my-patience part of my job! The kids I teach, no matter how bratty, disrespectful or just plain undedicated they are, aren't nearly as bad as their parents.
"Felicity is struggling to cope with being 7." Much to my horror, I hear that every other day it seems. "Little Kelly couldn't practice because she was sooooo stressed and has to have her TV time or we feel we are pressuring her too much." W. T. F. Parents = enablers.
@chesterrosie I had a student who told me I was showing off when I played the piece so she heard how it went. That was the last lesson as I told her parent I obviously wasn't the teacher for her. Love the princesses! NOT!!!
@luckyfrogswimmer And foreign language teachers, parents and students. When asked their goals in the course, even first time students answer, "I expect to be fluent by the end of the school year"! Parents blame the teachers for not being able to simple zip open the kids' head & pour the knowledge in, w/o the students doing a thing.
Just had this conversation with a parent earlier today. They assume their kid is the best at tuba because he can play iron man. I didn't have the heart to tell them iron man is a football game stand tune normally chosen by lower-than-average bands.
Wow! Lots if teachers seem to identify with this! Most of my band parents have been REALLY appreciative and understanding of the demands placed on a music teacher that cares works hard. It's funny how one or two clueless parents can make you feel so frustrated!
@thebskinner- Amen skinner. I am a band a nd recorders teacher at a local private school. This is my second year at the school, but I tell you, it sure is a pain in the ass to be forced into giving my beginner band students the instruments that THIER parents want them to play, not what I recommend based upon body size, mouth shape, or interests...
brilliant!! so true!! i had a parent complain to me one time that I made her child look like a beginner (she was) in a Christmas concert because I put her in a group with kids that were much younger than her and clearly not as good. How could I tell her they were all the same age and ability, her child was just freakishly tall!!?!
It's a bit of a stretch in places, but there sure are parents out there who don't get it. There are some who seem to think we're superhuman, and that we can, in a matter of weeks, turn their unpractising children into concert virtuosi by osmosis or something... the point is made that if you don't enourage your kid to practise, it doesn't matter how much musical ability you have as a parent. No teacher in the world is going to be of help for your child.
This is exactly accurate. Any parents of music-learning-children out there (who are, of course, without exception, "very talented"), take note and don't act like this.
haha i reall reall REALLY love all these xtranormal videos! lotsa talented little writers out there! :)

I had a parent talk about their son like he was the reincarnation of Mozart and he was absolutely dreadful! This stuff is absolutely hilarious and so true!!

"I tend to eat my lunch at lunchtime."
"That is unacceptable..."
I love that.

LOL. Even though he is indeed spineless, he has a few good zingers. "She is *special*", "Your flute-playing background must be where Felicity gets her brass-playing skills from," "The flute and cornet duo market is an untapped resource of musical fulfillment. I'm sure it will be superb." I love this and parts two and three.

haha too funny! and so unrealistic on so many levels!
and oh yeah, most parents are enablers!
and btw, our music teachers (band & choir) have 300+ kids! and they DO know the kids' names!
audra6900 1 year ago
@audra6900 After teaching music for 35 years, no, there is nothing unrealistic about the conversation. Trust me, there are parents like that.

LOL I love how the mother says cornett instead of cornet. Just shows she has no idea what she's talking about. xD

@chesterrosie I had a student who told me I was showing off when I played the piece so she heard how it went. That was the last lesson as I told her parent I obviously wasn't the teacher for her. Love the princesses! NOT!!!

This is all too common among youth sports parents and coaches as well.
luckyfrogswimmer 1 year ago
@luckyfrogswimmer And foreign language teachers, parents and students. When asked their goals in the course, even first time students answer, "I expect to be fluent by the end of the school year"! Parents blame the teachers for not being able to simple zip open the kids' head & pour the knowledge in, w/o the students doing a thing.

Is this really what i have to look forward to as a music teacher?

Just had this conversation with a parent earlier today. They assume their kid is the best at tuba because he can play iron man. I didn't have the heart to tell them iron man is a football game stand tune normally chosen by lower-than-average bands.
AgapeWaves 1 year ago
Wow! Lots if teachers seem to identify with this! Most of my band parents have been REALLY appreciative and understanding of the demands placed on a music teacher that cares works hard. It's funny how one or two clueless parents can make you feel so frustrated!
thebskinner 1 year ago
@thebskinner- Amen skinner. I am a band a nd recorders teacher at a local private school. This is my second year at the school, but I tell you, it sure is a pain in the ass to be forced into giving my beginner band students the instruments that THIER parents want them to play, not what I recommend based upon body size, mouth shape, or interests...
TurgeonFan77132 1 year ago
This, I suspect, is very close to the way things really are between teachers and parents. Teachers are woefully underpaid.

brilliant!! so true!! i had a parent complain to me one time that I made her child look like a beginner (she was) in a Christmas concert because I put her in a group with kids that were much younger than her and clearly not as good. How could I tell her they were all the same age and ability, her child was just freakishly tall!!?!

Brilliant! What a crack up - but so close to the truth :-)
leathermeg 1 year ago
It's a bit of a stretch in places, but there sure are parents out there who don't get it. There are some who seem to think we're superhuman, and that we can, in a matter of weeks, turn their unpractising children into concert virtuosi by osmosis or something... the point is made that if you don't enourage your kid to practise, it doesn't matter how much musical ability you have as a parent. No teacher in the world is going to be of help for your child.
