@skateNappreciate lol, no. Nothing quite that literal, I'm sure. She's singing an old blues type of lament, with theatrical drama ramped up to an unhinged 11, basically. Saw one review years ago that this song might be an expression of the turmoil and effort required to make her art/music, laying her self bare for all to see. Who knows for sure, you may assign whatever meaning you think applies. But I wouldn't over-think it. The uncertainty makes it more interesting.

I was at a party in New York late 95 and had the To Bring you my Love cd with me. Some of the people said 'Oh I hear she's the next big thing...put it on.' I played that track and it went down like a lead balloon. Needless to say, they pulled the plug after that tune. Everyone deeply disturbed. They put Jewel on instead. I slipped away shortly after very pleased with myself. Still love that song. It disturbes everyone I ever play it to, even now. Tip of the hat to you Polly!
