War is not reliant upon strength or strategy as much as it is dependent upon philosophy and determination. If you were to place Shaolin monks and Spartans against each other, in equal sized force, there is no possibly way to have Spartan victory. The Spartans relied upon instilling fear and overpowering their enemies. Such methods wouldn't work so easily on Shaolin.

firebending: Wushu kung fu

waterbending: tai chi

Earthbending: Tae Kwon Doe

airbending:Shaolin kung fu

they wanted bending to look cool so they looked up these martial arts styles and even put qualities of the elemts accordingly to the martial arts

in avatar water bending can heal and tai chi is a style of chi and healing :) lol

Water Bending is Tai Chi, Airbending is Ba Gua Zhang (Kung fu) and Earth is Hung Gar (Kung fu) and fire is Northern Shaolin (Kung fu) Their all Kung fu systems, There's no Taekwondo and air bending is based on Ba Gua made popular by street gangs in Hong Kong. If you watch Aang and Ba Gua, they use circular movements and footwork, it's Ba Gua, trust me.
