The Riding Mechanic chappies, in these sleds, 'ave always impressed me viz a vie their courage and heroic ability "to hang-on and close their eyes." And quite rarely did ya ever hear them scream in terror...usually ONLY in the corners...during massive drifts...all crossed-up. How cute was it always to see them, after the event with rag in hand, wiping the tears from their eyes. The casual fan thought that he shed 'em out of joy (for a good finish)...we KNOW different!
This was my Late Uncle, Kelly Petillo, Passed away June 30th 1970 , Jimmy Passed away Aug 1st 2008, Kelly raced @ Indy For 10 years , Was known as a fearless risk taker, A Quoit from 4 Time Indy Winner A.J. Foyt- when Kelly would test his car everybody would watch him cause he would run so deep into the brick paved turns, and also stated if he was to rememberd he (A.J. Foytt 4 time Indy Winner) He wanted to Rememberd Like Kelly Petillo.
My Uncle Kelly Won that race With Mr Dunham in 1935 I was going to meet Jimmy Dunham and he passed before we met Aug 2008.
Kelly Petillo Pased away June 30th 1970, I did meet and Talk to Kellys sister, somethings were just ment to be, R.I.P.Jimmy & Uncle Kelly, God Speed 2009
Where has this gem been? The role of the riding mechanic is something not easily understood by younger racing fans and how the rear view mirror helped Ray Harroun win the first Indy race Great Video! Thank you for sharing!!
I agree with David. There is so much history and so many great stories that a lot of us are too young to know. A little more Rick Mears, whom I do remember very well, would be fun too... ;-)

My Uncle Larry came in 9th place in that race in 1935. I met Jimmy Dunham before he passed away in Aug 2008.

1935 was my Dad's first 500! Kelly Petillo. They built a platform on the back of a pickup and watched it from that truck's platform in the infield.
