When I visited New York two and a half years ago I stayed at a hotel near Sheepshead Bay in southern Brooklyn, visited a lot of places of course but one of the first places I went to was Rockaway. Some friends wondered why the hell I would go to such a place rather than to Ellis Island or Times Square (although I was there too) or why I didn't watch a Broadway show and so on. They just don't get it do they? Btw I went to 53rd & 3rd as well...

The story I heard is that Joe went to see the Ramones on their first British tour, but couldn't get into the venue (The Roundhouse -- he was either too young or too broke -- I forget which). Anyway, the Ramones helped Joe, Johnny Rotten, and a couple others sneak into the club by pulling them through a bathroom window. So, yeah, Joe was a big fan of the Ramones. The Clash and The Ramones were the greatest rock 'n' roll bands, EVER.
