@claredontyoudare You can learn most of it. True, some might be beyond you, but dancing lindy is always a joy. What they are doing is fit for the stage, but not for a crowded dance floor.
My grandmother used to tell me about lindy hoppers back when she was young (she was born in 1905). She said you had to be careful in crowded dance halls since some of the guys would swing their partner hard enough to knock down nearby dancers.
My Mum is from Belfast where the first GI soldiers were brought to in 1942. They taught them Jitterbug Jive but they had to do in the corners of the dance halls, as the hall management employed walkers who would throw you out if they caught you doing it. This was because it was very unpopular with halls as it stopped the anti clockwise movement of the rest of the conventional dancers !

Slam Stewart is the bass player, Slim Gaillard is the pianist/guitarist. Both were famous at the time for their hit "Cement Mixer Putti Putti" (one version featured a very young Charlie Parker on alto sax), and made many appearances on radio.
The dancers are called "Whitey's Lindy Hoppers" and the move is called "Hellzapoppin'" and it was filmed in 1941. For more footage of similar dancing check out: "Day at the Races" "Keep Punchin" "Groovie Movie" "Don't Knock the Rock" and many others (I have some listed in my favorites).
Technically they were call the Harlem Congaroos at the time. For a list of all the names of the dancers and musicians, check out the version I've uploaded. =)
