  • Woman: Do not achieve, regrettably, this despair...this mourning...it seems...it seems to me...Man: Sky(God) did I understand?Did I understand? In this voice which trembles, in these eyes full of tears, isn'it a confession of what I read(or say)?Woman: Ah keep silent!Man: What's the use to try, to deceive us again?Woman: I implore you! Man: Go away! We were both lying, by saying us winners, of the immortal love, which quiver in our hearts! To continue... I'm getting really tired to translate.

  • Translation:(Man) All my soul is there! Why wake me up, ô breath of the spring? Why, wake me up? On my front, I feel, your caresses. And neverthless very close, is the time, of thunderstorms, and of sadnesses. Why wake me up, ô breathe of the spring? Tomorrow in the valey, will comme the traveler, remembering, of my first glory. And his eyes vainly will search, my magnificience. They will find, only mourning and poverty! Regrettably! Why wake me up, ô breathe, of the spring?! To continue...

  • his rendition is different from that of ludovic teziér, or are my ears mistaken?

  • Queeeer. My ears don't stand so deep modifications. And not talking about Hampson's voice, which is outstanding.

Merci

  • Now I absolutely love Thomas Hampson. I have sung for him in a master class. Incredible baritone if not the best in the world. WHY OH WHY would they choose him to sing a TENOR area and leave out the wonderful melody and high notes just to let him do it??? Werther is such a gorgeous opera.

  • @Durchlaucht1970 this was written by massenet himself . the opera was written for tenor and was written for baritone another time .... the composer wants this 2nd version .... but for sure i prefer the tenor version

  • No, este es tenor SIN AGUDOS. Quieren oir baritones, oigan a Merril, Warren, Taddei, Bastianini,, but Handsome is very simple a tenor with NO HIGH NOTE.

Listen how he open the F and F sharp -even many tenors cover those notes.

  • Well not too bad....I saw Jonas Kaufmann in Paris this winter....much different

  • How cool would it be to have a trio do this?

  • Great version. Where to obtain sheet of music?

  • The melody is a little different from the tenor aria

    Sound not good for me

But may be good for someone else taste

  • Two great American singers, and I love this baritone version, gives a different debth to this character, and in consequence, to the whole opera as well.

  • Does anyone know how can i get sheetnotes of this baritone version? Please HELP!

  • i like it, but tenor version is emotionally stronger.

  • Weird. I love Hampson but is weird.

  • why? He sings this song for baryton, and very well, doesn't he?

  • @matthieuaufranc97513 , I think weird because i remember the tenor melody. Hampson ever sings very well, but is weird, sorry.

  • Yes, i've known the tenor's version because it's the famous version. And it was weird to listen to this because I sing the tenor's version a long time ago. But I'm a baryton, and it's so good because the instrumental partitions are the sames, but the voice is not a tenor : it's a baryton. I think that Massenet has done a good job.

  • @matthieuaufranc97513 , I know that Hampson is baryton, and the song was composed for baryton too, but i think weird. I dont think ugly, but is wierd. Sorry again.

  • @linow666 No problem, You haven't to be sorry, ou know?;)

    Thanks for your comment

  • It's interesting to listen to this side-by-side with the tenor version. Same lyrics, but you get something different out of it. For example, listen to the "ma splendeur" section at 1:56. This is a climax point for the baritone, but the tenors run right through it.

  • Un tenor cantando la versión para barítono

  • Quel ténor?

Thomas Hampson est un baryton américain.

  • hum?!?!?!?!?!?!?

  • For your information:

Massenet was so touched from the voice of Mattia Batistini and he rewrote the part of Werther for him .

At his time Batistini was one of the best baritones in the world and he was called as "Il Re dei Baritoni" the King of Baritones.

  • This is a masterful reworking by Massenet, and a first class heartrending rendition by Hampson.

The great Massenet knew the greatness of the Baritone sond would triumph in an alternate and distinct version!

    stevetex

  • different but genuine in the sensibility...

Completamente snaturata

  • à peppuz81

Massenet wrote this air so for baritone, it is not the same that for the tenor.

    The melody is good

  • wouldn't it be better to lower 2 and half notes and then sing it with the well-known melody used by tenors?

  • Massanet would have had to lower the whole opera a minor 3rd. It was much easier to rewrite the one part to suit a baritone. I wish it was performed more often.

    excellente interpretation ,bravo

  • So beautiful! His voice is just so mesmerizing!

  • why not hush and just let your senses get blessed by this great artistry...

blessed be youtube and all the nice souls who posts this awsome moments ..

    Ciao foly ,

    eutuve from Italy

  • not good. the melody has been competely misinterpreted and was not sung as, the great aria that it is.

  • Massenet wrote this air so for baritone, it is not the same that for the tenor.

    The melody is good.

  • i stand corrected. thankyou.

  • @aaron3lee Massenet wrote it like this! T. Hampson is singing it correctly

  • Yes, but I think the only difference is because the baritone version has less high notes...

  • Toute mon âme est là! Pourquoi me réveiller, ô souffle du printemps, pourquoi me réveiller? Pourquoi me réveiller, o souffle du printemps? Pourquoi me réveiller ô souffle du printemps!
