  • are you from dual survival

  • Where's Cody (your bush hippie buddy)?

  • It was also for ground sloth

  • atlatlatlatlatlatlatlatlatlatlatlatl

  • bieber is the best target for this thing

  • Your channel is absolutly great, Subscribed!

  • Don't meant to sound ignorant but what is he talking about when he says 125 grain?

  • @GargoyleZoo grain are the amount of gun powder in a gun shell. the higher grains the higher power.

  • @herpingmad145

A grain is a measurement of weight. So the hunting tip weighs 125 grains. Which is roughly 8.5 grams

  • i have used these before in England also. i know them as French arrows. we used to tape a fire work to it and try to get it so when we arrow was in flight the firework would explode. good fun

  • Great vids Dave You The Man!!....

  • you can see that ancient weapon he's talking about on an episode of Curiosity on Discovery Channel called I, Caveman.

  • 10:26 your welcome

  • Seen these before. Think it was around 1000 years ago watching the cave man olympics!

  • called atlatl too

  • I and my friends used to use these many years ago in rural England. we used to call them a 'Dutch arrow'. I ave killed many rabbits with one. We used to use a straight length of willow.

  • Awesome stuff right there bro, almost forgotten skill. Thanks for keeping this art alive and awakening me to it !

  • atlatl? would that not help?

  • @FlyingAxblade i spoke too soon

  • Nice video can I use pine wood for this (only thing I got here in sunny Florida)

  • thanks dave good tip

  • Mr. Canterbury, thank you for this video! All I kept finding on the net was some short video of some guy throwing one of these, nothing this informative.

  • You should make a compound bow

  • can you kill say a big game like a deer from 20 to 30

  • @pbldhdeerhunting it would depend on your strength,

  • Dave wheres Cody with his grubs

  • @MySTERyxXxJELLO: I hear Cody used to be on this channel... then he took an arrow to the foot.

  • After putting the first tension tying around the notch, instead of letting the string going paralel to the arrow, maintain maximum tension and spiral the string around the arrow 2 or 3 times. It will greatly improve the range, the impact force and the precision.

  • So this is a "Fuck around when you have a haybail" type weapon nowadays?

  • @blargation LOL!

  • Great video, can I ask can you make arrows out of oak dowel rods and can you make them as long as one of your limbs 60cm for my take down bow because I want to increase my draw length about 10cm thanks

  • @KarlEastwood64 It is an internet meme in reference to the video game Skyrim. In the game there is a very common response by non player characters which says "I used to be an adventure like you, but I took an arrow to the knee." or close there too of.

  • this is the guy from survive in two?

  • Notch.

  • We used to call 'em Dutch arrows in the UK. We used to make shorter ones than the ones you have, around 15". With practice you can get quite accurate with them.

  • dave canterburry? like from dual survival? i think im gonna subscribe :)

  • Agreed, its just not an effective hunting weapon....

  • When I was a kid in the UK in the '50s we used to make these from garden canes (Bamboo) usually about a 1/2" in diameter and 3ft long, split the end two ways for a folded thin cardboard flight with a three inch nail pushed into the business end. Then we used to stand 50 or 60 yds apart and throw them high into the air at each other and dodge them.... and no, I never got one in the knee!

  • Almost every video that say "Arrow" , "Archer" , "Archery" there will be "Arrow on the knee" comment.

  • @declaration963 arrow in, not on.

  • @jackoff3000 i think the game says to the knee

  • @random4052 game says "in the knee" its just been said wrong so many times people say to now.

  • »»───(knee)───►

  • @Tartarvs lol nice.

  • Atlalts have also been used by Alaska natives for hunting whales in the Aleutian Islands. As for a survival scenario, they might not be the best to use for many reasons. Its major advantage over bows is you can wait all day ready to launch it, unlike a bow.

As for arrow points, smaller ones are also used where resources for them are scarce (such as Alaska). They are also known for crushing bone at that size. Nice video! I like seeing all sorts of primitive tools and techniques!

  • like all of the pathfinder vid's good knowledge......you never know i might use this one day!

  • I used to use arrows like these, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

  • he needs te exhale. lol

  • Hey can u makea bow string out of fishing line?

  • I used to be a path finder, then I took an arrow to the knee

  • I used to take an arrow to the knee, but then i took an arrow to the head...

  • Put it in my knee NOWWWW!

  • @ronpalzur I used to have an arrow in my knee just like you, then I took an arrow in the arrow in my knee.

    ARROWCEPTION!

  • this is cool ive only seen atlatl's before =)

  • Got to say, I don't have as much faith in these things as Dave seems to have.

I made several scaled up versions of these darts - thicker shafts, heavier heads, ect. While the will fly quite far and 'stick' into the ground, or into a board at close range, It is nearly impossible to ge them to penetrate more than an inch past the broad head. IMO that limits these things to game the size of a raccoon at best (and then only if you can hit it).

Deer and flying birds are pipe dreams as far as I see.

  • 3:42 did he just say what I thought he did???

  • are you the guy from dual survival on discovery channel

  • @ltloganwaffle0 yes he is

  • @firewishes ofcourse he knows what he's talking about.... he is on fucking discovery channel

  • switzerland ftw :)

  • Inadequate research and repetition repetition you're more professional than this effort

  • thank you for the info, I'm going to give it a try

  • does this work for zombies?

  • @speedy409 anything that can take out the head works for zombies :P

  • @speedy409 no only vampires

  • Dave, you certainly became a much better speaker and a terrific presenter. What a wonderful video! Great work!

  • i want see Cody Lundin on your video ^^

  • Really enjoyed the film we made a smaller version of the throwing dart when we were kids 40 + years ago we knew it as the Dutch arrow.

  • In the UK these are known as Dutch arrows and as a kid used to make dozens of them

  • i hope you fucking hunters all get cancer and die bitches.

  • @ReturnOfJackDawson

And we are thre "evil" people...

  • @ZombieExpress Yes! Killing helpless animals for pleasure is a fucking crime. shame on you.

  • @ReturnOfJackDawson its not just for pleasure i bet he ate it and quit cussing

  • @doctorduck88 i ate your daughters pussy bitch.

  • @ReturnOfJackDawson i fucked ur gf freind now stfu

  • @ReturnOfJackDawson Merry Christmas to you too, buddy...

  • your like the kipkay of bushcraft <3

  • i love how its supposed to look like hes in the woods and you can hear the freeway right behind the camera!!

  • nice

  • where is cody?

  • do those work on FBI agents?

  • @Antiks72 braud heads always do

  • @Antiks72 yes quite well actually.... don't ask 0_0

  • lol love dual survival u should do a show in the woods of Virginia

  • i have never used a weapon similar to this at all, so this is all just a guess at it, but could you possibly use two of them at the same time? wouldn't that, in theory, increase your chances of a successful kill? or would it diminish the accuracy too much to make the weapon usable?

  • Valk

  • That's cool but I doubt one could take a deer with that. I think that's one of those things I would have to see to believe.

  • put a rop on it

  • i dont even use arrowheads sometimes. i buy bamboosticks at the right thicknes get my knife and just cut a tip

  • he is,in one of vids he said he was trying out for a new show.

  • hi how come you dont use this in dual survival

  • you are the coolest guy and i am a huge fan of your tv show duil servivel and you make awsome things.

  • in dual survivor dave makes the real moves in gettin food and shelter whil the hippie only wants to eat fucking grass like a cow, common man you cant live like that.

  • @liljoke2050 don't talk shit man,Cody is a badass too, thats what makes the show interesting,is that you have two guys who have dramatically different styles of survival, and both work

  • @ViralMessiah hey! whos talking shit here? all im saying is what man do you want at dinner? the man who brings steak or the man who brings lettuce?

  • @liljoke2050 I'd much rather have a pork chop,no doubt, but in a survival situation,I'd eat whatever would keep me alive,Cody doesn't usually find the kind of food I'd like, but if I was lost in the woods,I'd be happy as shit to have him with me

  • @ViralMessiah well yea. your right about that.

  • cody lundin is my hero!!!!!!!!!

  • liking his realism!

  • I love this guy on duel survival that hippie though is a fucking idiot.

  • I love this guy on duel survival that hippie though is a fucking idiot.

  • just sayin this, yes Dave Canterbury is the one from duel survival...wow i wonder how many other people watched his channel before he went on duel survival...hmmmm

  • @solorstars i was...when dual survival came up i was like...hey i know him :))

  • dual survival is 100X better than Man Vs wild

  • Did you have to aim low? Just asking.

    .

  • Not to dismiss the fact that he made a cool arrow, but you'd do good by making a rudimentary club to hunt with, less accuracy needed because of size and mass of the weapon, and more effective in my opinion. But if you could make a bow, in a survival situation, well your doing good, but the amount of time to make those arrows & bow is way more than making a hunting club, sometimes in survival situations you don't have time to waste.

  • Can anybody direct me to the video in which dave shows how to make duct tape fletchings? I've heard him mention it in a couple of other videos I have watched but have yet to see the instructional. I'd love to have that handy tip. Thank you

  • he looks like the guy on dual survival

  • the deer probabley has a great fear of man because man keeps sticking effin arrows and bullets in it.

  • hey man your really cool ive been practicing primitive skills for some time it has always interested me i knap my own arrowheads and start fire with the bow drill method i learned how to make cordage and i am awesome at trapping with primitive methods deadfalls etc. in my free time i shoot my bows or practice slinging im a pretty good marksman

  • cool

  • i have emergency water drive well if ur interested

  • atlatl atlatl atlatl

  • I played with these when I was a kid back in the 70's. Remembered them while having a nostalgic chat with a Mate. I couldn't remember exactly how they were made so went looking on YT. And found you. Thanks Mate. I remember now. Although, we called them Dutch Arrows. We didn't hunt with them but they are great for going for distance and height. Just add a little weight to the tip. Hours of fun. Trying to make the Perfect Arrow was always the real mission. Kind of in the same vein as Conkers

  • @stig99914 Yes, we called them Dutch Arrows too, and we made them out of canes and used playing cards as flights. You simply split the cane and cut the 2 cards into heart shapes, slid them in the slit cane, tied the top and opened them up. You didn't need a notch as the cane had knuckles you could use. We found string wasn't as good as old boot laces lol!

  • @tammas2000 LOL!!! I forgot how much fun they were. Glad I'm not alone.

  • OMG ITS YOU ZOMGZOMG!!!! hey dave wheres cody ? haha jk

  • Huuu Aahhh All the way!!!!

  • dual survival i think is one of the best reality shows out their teaching you the main idea of survival. this video i thought was pretty cool i will diffidently have to give it a try.

o ye do you u could make a video on how to make small game traps for like rabbits and boars that would be awsome

  • say atlatl 5 times fast

  • I knew absolutely nothing about this. Atlatl I knew about, slings, slingshots and of course javelins and arrows, but this is new to me. Very interesting. Thanks for this; I'll have to give it a try.

  • Great videos. Keep them coming. Never missed a video or dual survivor!

  • Very nice video as always. I am however a stick pearson =) Using the stick instead of a rope i belive the force is much greater due to a little wrist flick. What is your oppinion on the both ways? Good luck and keep up the good work.

  • hey dave is there any way u could put some autographed pictures of u and cody on ebay or the pathfinder website cuz i would pay up to 150 dollars for that picture

  • are you the guy from dual survival

  • @burn622 `Not the 'guy' be the Man!

  • @burn622 yep

  • Don't rob this guy he will pop you in the throat with an atlatl

  • @kido368 yeah

  • now u realize that

  • Hey, first time commenter, long time admirer. My grandfather taught me to make and use a swiss arrow about 20 or so years ago along with classic slings and catapults. Though he favored the catapult (sling shot) he assured me him and his friends back on the farm in Ireland were taking wood pigeons from the tops of trees, pheasants coming into land and for the most part startled rabbits on the move! goes to show what a lack of tv and xbox can do for your aim.

  • @slyboy9 Me and most of my friends spent alot of time messing around with them as a kid, and while my aim was much better than the vid, I think taking down birds in flight would be almost impossible. There's a knack to it (which he's not go in the vid), but still they are not accurate weapons. That said, you can dish out enough force with one to kill something imo, if you can hit it... (again he's not really got the throwing arm for it in the vid, needs a mis-spent youth).

  • this video makes me want to fill a balloon with gasoline and shoot it with a fire arrow. oh wait, i did! its on my channel if interested!

  • @DriggsASU Wow, that could come in real handy in a survival situation, if what you were trying to kill was a balloon and time. AND, provided you found a gasoline tree.

  • 8:46 good penetration

  • Hey Dave I saw the video from Devildwarfbladesmith were he was making your knife. Here is a thought the hole were you want to put a carabeaner, if you have him make the hole big enough you could use it to straighten arrows in the manner that native americans did. Just a thought.

    Nightknifer

  • Your a champ Dave thanks!

  • Has anyone tried this with shock cord?

  • looks like it would take some practice

  • just throwing this out there, the aboriginals in australia have been using a similar weapon like this to hunt aswell :) i think its called a "woomara" or something :D

  • dulakaba, the tail of the arrow would inhibit and eventually stop it's spinning.

  • That's a pretty sweet dart there.

  • is that the guy from dual survival??
