Yo lee. how come when i do the body fat caliper test it comes out so much lower then doing it with the tape measure? Im pretty sure Im doing the caliper right.
How much skin do you grab to make the measurement? I weigh about 147lbs, 5 ft 9, and I can see my abs quite well down the middle. But for some reason, I seem to store more around my sides above the hip, and very little elsewhere (like a girl lol). How much skin do I pull or 'pinch' to make the reading?
yea she's nice, no offense Lee. I'm guessing she competes in figure or bodybuilding too. Thanks for the link Lee, going to use get some calipers and do this myself.
Hi Lee, I wanted to test my body fat, just for the records... I guess I'm doing something wrong, the calculator says that I have 1,4% fat, I'm lean, but that can't be right... just saying :-)
When you are really lean, body fat tests will "under estimate" your bodyfat by 3-4%. If you research the various bodyfat formulas they mention this. When I tested my bodyfat in this video it came up less then 2% as well. Bodyfat tests are most accurate for folks who are in the mid range (i.e. 10-20% range).
When i do the chest abs thigh i get 8.4% but when i do the neck girth height weight and waist one i get 10.4 can anyone clear this up which is more accurate?
Generally skin fold measurements are more accurate then tape measure formulas. When you just measure with a tape measure it can't tell the difference between muscle mass and fat mass. But skin fold thickness is pure bodyfat.
Excellent post as always Lee! I used your online calculator, and it said I am at 9%. I still have a little ways to go, but I'm on the right track! I added your website to my favourites, and will check in often!
Hey Lee! I was curious how your body fat claculator works, so I clicked on the link and entered the numbers you were getting and guessed your weight. I noticed no matter what weight I was entering the fat percentage remained the same but the lean muscle mass percentage changed. Would it be correct to say the thickness of the fold determines fat percentage regardless of weight and factoring in your weight calculates lean muscle mass?
Chest - diagonal fold along the lateral border of the pectoralis muscle one-third (women) or one-half (men) the distance between the anterior axillary line and the nipple
Midaxilla - vertical fold along the midaxillary line and the nipple
Subscapular - diagonal fold 1 - 2 cm from the inferior angle of the scapula
Triceps - vertical fold halfway between the acromion and olecran processes on the posterior midline of the upper arm. The arm should be relaxed and extended at the side.
Abdomen - vertical fold level with the umbilicus, about 2 cm to one side
Suprailium - diagonal fold at the iliac crest and the anterior axillary line
Thigh - vertical fold on the anterior surface of the thigh, halfway between the proximal border of the patella and the intersection of the inguinal crease and the midpoint of the long axis of the thigh.
need to measure the right side of the body you do not have to pinch hard
Hey Lee, I've been wanting to build muscle mass and lose stomach fat at the same time. I lift 5 days a week and I'm currently taking Strength Vitapacks from GNC to help the process come along better. I do have a belly, but my chest is fairly developed. If I work on building muscle mass, will I burn stomach fat too?
You need to specifically focus your efforts on fat loss if you are going to get lean. I've got a good program that can help you called "Extreme Fat Loss" which is available on my website LeeHayward . com /dvd
Hi Lee as per usual some very inteesting tips and facts from you, what i am after is the fat loss workout dvd but i don't trust certain web sites and i trust your knowledge, thanks
hey Lee...so i had the stomach flu last week and i wasnt eating much tha whole week. so today when i went to the gym my bench went down 20 pounds! (ECTOMORPH by the way)...how long is it gonna take for me to get all the dtrength i used to have??? its already hard enough putting on muscle as it is...please REPLY.
Hey Lee, Can you help please. I measured my body fat today in my gym. But not with the caliper but on the scale. It gave me about 24.1%. I checked some websites and the healthy BF% is 18-25%. I am quite worried now. I am 5.4' and 67.1 Kilos. I have been doing workouts since a year now. So am I losing muscle mass instead of BF all these days? I remember when I started gym my weight was 76Kilos and BF about 33%.
@ellankih I worked out your lean masses at both start and now. At 33% body fat and 76kg your lean mass would have been 50kg, which means you would have had 26kg of body fat.
And with a body fat of 24% at 67kg your lean mass would still be 50kg and your body fat would be 17kg. So from the looks of it, in one year you have lost 9kg, all of which has been body fat. You haven't lost any muscle mass.
Well as long as your getting stronger in the gym every month and you eat the right amount of protein and eat lean, its really not necessary to track your bodyfat
Im 16 and this month I'm on a bulking dieet. I take alot of dairy products, and my question is that I get weird spots (allergy) is this because of the dairy products or a specific product. I take lot of dairy products already a year in my dieet...
I'd purchased the Accu-Measure a couple years ago. It seemed to be a bit off (on the lean side). I was only testing just above the hip. Anyway, after watching this, I dusted it off and gave it another shot; this time, using the three (man) testing areas you describe. Came out to 6% at a body weight of 180 (no, not kilos!) I am fairly lean but 6%, I'm not so sure. I'll have to get dunked and see how those numbers compare... maybe I'll be surprised.
lee if you was only going to do pull ups or push ups for the day and only do body weight and no machines how would you warm up please it would be a great help. people say dont warm up for body weight you said to me you do warm up even if body weight and i think your way to me sounds best. rather then going straight on to pull ups what would you do to warm up. would you just do a couple of reps of pull up. then go all out next set? and what about push up please thanks ;o)
The test came back saying I was 1.6% but all bodyfat formulas tend to "under estimate" your bodyfat when really lean. Because even though I have very little fat under the skin, the body carries internal bodyfat around the organs, etc. So in reality I'd say I'm closer to 4-5% bodyfat.
Hey lee i have a question. how can i get my chest bigger? my weight is 190 pounds. and when i work out i feel i get stronger but my chest never gets any bigger it only gets stronger.
@lordvoldemort578 i do enough enough to make sure im not hungry or anything like that but i dont take any protein or anything...idk if that has anything to do with it or not.

Hey Lee,Thank You, its about time some one showed us how to do this using these calipers, I have had these things lying around not sure if i was doing it right. At 56 years old and 156 lbs got 2mm on chest, 9mm on thigh and a big O wopping 22 on my gut, again thanks
lee how do i lose bodyfat fast. ive been dieting and working out but i cant seem to drop alot of fat. ive been working out for two months, ive been doing a mix off lifting weights and cardio but is their a quicker way off speeding this process up?
@sentinel9100 lee will prob answer this, but the fast way is not usually the best way, around 2lbs a week should be your goal...but if you decide you want to loss more up ur cardio, cut back on your calories and a cleaner diet
Great job on working out and all, but you just need to give yourself more time. Even at my level of experience I still need at least 6 months of dieting to get ripped for a bodybuilding competition. If you would like to see exactly how I go about dieting and training for fat loss, then you should pick up a copy of my Extreme Fat Loss DVD Program. There is a link in the video description above that you can click on for more info.
When you are really lean the test tends to under estimate your BF% by about 3-4%. This is due to internal fat that's not stored under the skin. But my results were 1.6% and Trish's was 7.5%. But factoring in the error margin I'd say I'm about 4% and Trish is about 10%.
@leemhayward That doesn't sound right Lee. My friend has 9% bodyfat and his 6 packs clearly show while he's relaxed and not flexing at all. How are you at 4% and not have your 6 packs show when you're not flexing?
I 100% disagree. The electronic one isn't that accurate down to the percent, there's no denying that, but those cheap ass shit calipers are defintely not calibrated properly.Calipers are good for one thing, monitering the measurements of the sites, not to use to come up with some percentage. Arguably the most accurate person in the world with calibers who created the biosignature method doesn't even recoomend trying to calculate the percentage of body fat. Harpenden and Langue are the best brand
You maybe able to find them locally at a sporting goods store or bodybuilding supplement store. But I have a shipment of these calipers along with body tape measures on the way and I'm going to offer them right on my website.
damn lee you're ripped as f***, amazing.. for maximum quad hypertrophy, would 4 sets of 20 rep squats with good form followed by 2 sets of high rep leg extensions suffice? please let me know, Thank you
There are all kinds of leg workouts you can use and get results. Just go to my main channel page and check out my "Leg Workout Playlists" to see some sample leg workouts.
If a person calculate his BMR (Basal metabolic rate) etc. and knows how much kcal he has to put in to gain lets say 0,5kg a week thats a kcal intake of +500kcal each day, then the person calculates how much carbs, protein and fat he is suppose to consume. The scale shows after 1 month a total gain of 2kg (0,5kg per week), the question now is does this person still need to calculate bodyfat?
Yes, I'd still recommend you monitor your bodyfat percentage on a regular basis along with your bodyweight. This way you know exactly how much lean muscle mass and how much fat mass you have on your body.
Yo lee, I been using a body fat caliper for awhile now and now that i saw your video...i just realized the little thing that u move on the caliper that shows u where it lines up on the in/mm ruler. Ur suppose to follow that right cause now that I used it instead of trying to read where the end ends up, i noticed that my bodyfat is alot lower that I would expect.
1 mm chest, 2 mm abs and 3 mm legs ??? are you kidding bro, you did it wrong man. You need to take more skin. It should hurt when you take the skinfold. If you tipe in your stats into a bodyfat calculator you will get 0% bodyfat.
I don't wanna hate on you but you need to do it the right way....=)
Both of y'all are in great shape. I hope I can find me a girl that likes to workout one day. Also could you do a vid on Vince Girondas neck press? Thanks
Why do you want an offline version? You obviously have internet access or else you wouldn't be watching these videos and posting comments :-) What's wrong with clicking on the link in the video description and using the calculator that's posted on my website?
Thank you Lee. Great info. I always worried about losing weight. I lost 14Kg since I started my Gym routine. I never measure Bodyfat %. Thank you both for demonstrating the video.
Lee one question . Do you flex when you take the measurements? Cause I seem to get different resaults flexed and unflexed (especially on the chest)...Thank you.
Thanks man you are awesome. Keep up the good work.(been cycling your 28 days fast mass for 3 months now with great resaults. I think I'll get the blast your bench next.:-) )
Hey lee is it good to work out one body part in the morning and then a different during the afternoon? for example, i would work on my arms in the morning and then after school i would do chest, is that a healthy routine?
Personally I just like to go to the gym and workout with weights once a day. But I know some people who prefer to do 2 small workouts per day rather than 1 big workout. It comes down to your schedule and personal preference.
@MrSuperstvn if you were to do that, id say do compound movements in the am, and then do isolation at night ( work bench in morning, triceps at night, or dead lifts in morning, lat pull downs at night.
Gaining size and strength is fun because you feel big and strong and can set new personal records in your lifts. But getting ripped is nice because you look better.
When trying to get shredded the lower the better. The numbers I got when doing this test was:
1 mm thick skin fold on the chest, 2 mm thick skin fold on the side of the belly button, and 3 mm thick skin fold on the thigh. Ideally you would want to keep your skin folds to no more then 10 mm thick at max when bulking. The leaner you can stay in the off season, the easier it will be to keep your lean muscle when dieting down.
Yo lee. how come when i do the body fat caliper test it comes out so much lower then doing it with the tape measure? Im pretty sure Im doing the caliper right.

Where can a person buy the calipers? Are they available at most pharmarcies? Thanks.
SashineB 3 months ago
@SashineB

@killaj29ny
There are all kinds of leg workouts you can use and get results. Just go to my main channel page and check out my "Leg Workout Playlists" to see some sample leg workouts.

Hi lee, got a question here.
If a person calculate his BMR (Basal metabolic rate) etc. and knows how much kcal he has to put in to gain lets say 0,5kg a week thats a kcal intake of +500kcal each day, then the person calculates how much carbs, protein and fat he is suppose to consume. The scale shows after 1 month a total gain of 2kg (0,5kg per week), the question now is does this person still need to calculate bodyfat?
kookeediishh 3 months ago
@kookeediishh
Yes, I'd still recommend you monitor your bodyfat percentage on a regular basis along with your bodyweight. This way you know exactly how much lean muscle mass and how much fat mass you have on your body.

you are a lucky man lee to have a beautiful fit woman like trish all the best from a fan in ireland.

Yo lee, I been using a body fat caliper for awhile now and now that i saw your video...i just realized the little thing that u move on the caliper that shows u where it lines up on the in/mm ruler. Ur suppose to follow that right cause now that I used it instead of trying to read where the end ends up, i noticed that my bodyfat is alot lower that I would expect.

caledfwlch 3 months ago
do u flex when u take the readings?
caledfwlch 3 months ago 2
@caledfwlch
No. You DO NOT Flex when measuring your bodyfat percentage. Stay relaxed so it's easier to pinch the skin.

PureRemix 3 months ago
1 mm chest, 2 mm abs and 3 mm legs ??? are you kidding bro, you did it wrong man. You need to take more skin. It should hurt when you take the skinfold. If you tipe in your stats into a bodyfat calculator you will get 0% bodyfat.
I don't wanna hate on you but you need to do it the right way....=)

do you where i can find an offline version of the bodfat calculator?
WildDanHibiki 3 months ago
@WildDanHibiki
Why do you want an offline version? You obviously have internet access or else you wouldn't be watching these videos and posting comments :-) What's wrong with clicking on the link in the video description and using the calculator that's posted on my website?
leemhayward 3 months ago
Thank you Lee. Great info. I always worried about losing weight. I lost 14Kg since I started my Gym routine. I never measure Bodyfat %. Thank you both for demonstrating the video.

Lee one question . Do you flex when you take the measurements? Cause I seem to get different resaults flexed and unflexed (especially on the chest)...Thank you.
alexpaspgr 3 months ago
@alexpaspgr
Take all your measurements when relaxed. Don't tense the muscles because it will make it harder to properly pinch the skin fold.
leemhayward 3 months ago
@leemhayward

MrSuperstvn 3 months ago
@MrSuperstvn
Personally I just like to go to the gym and workout with weights once a day. But I know some people who prefer to do 2 small workouts per day rather than 1 big workout. It comes down to your schedule and personal preference.
leemhayward 3 months ago 4
@MrSuperstvn if you were to do that, id say do compound movements in the am, and then do isolation at night ( work bench in morning, triceps at night, or dead lifts in morning, lat pull downs at night.
TylerH2055 3 months ago
@MrSuperstvn your not lee haward so no. Us mere mortals train 3-5 days a week

Hey lee
what phase of bodybuilding do you enjoy more..bulking up or getting ripped?
gimlisgettinghungry 3 months ago
@gimlisgettinghungry
Both phases have pros and cons...
Gaining size and strength is fun because you feel big and strong and can set new personal records in your lifts. But getting ripped is nice because you look better.

WeightGainNetwork 3 months ago
whats a good body fat percentage when your trying to be shreded. and also what is the better body fat % when your bulking
Darkkor3 3 months ago
@Darkkor3 12% and below is usually when you start seeing your abs and more definition on your body.
FredTS 3 months ago
@Darkkor3
