I've always wondered why there aren't several cops stationed permanently in housing projects in America. Of course when you put a bunch of poor people in one location they are going to get desperate and some will resort to crime (drug trade, etc.). Residents need to step up, but so do cops.

I've been living in N.O. for about 8 months. The city has a rich, vibrant culture. However This is the result of history of the political and economic corruption in New Orleans that still goes on today. Out of the 7 City's I've lived in N.O. is by far the worse. It's horridly filthy down here. People do not take care of the city and the government dam sure doesn't either. Yea bourbon and the night life is cool but that's as far as it goes... Can't wait to live this place.

New Orleans is still very bad though, The hurricane made it worse. Crappy Government Housing is no coincidence. I've been saying for years Government run housing is loved by the Washington Beauraucrats because it keeps the black man down, "keeps him in his place". Government is no friend to anyone, and that includes that mulatto in the White House.
Unfortunately, in Memphis, government tore down all of the housing projects in the city, unleashing thousands to live in other parts of the city. It is now infested with gang crime, not just in the 'bad' areas of town, but everywhere. It is so dangerous now that people are leaving by the droves. They should have left the projects standing, at least to keep the crime contained and out of the nice areas of town.

the alternative is this, tear down the projects where a lot of the violence and crime was concentrated, and spread these people throughout the city. All kinds of people can live in the projects not just black. Its an economic thing not a racial thing. Depends on where you live however, I live in South Texas almost everyone who lives in the projects here is Mexican American and some white. New York is another example alot of Puerto Ricans live in the Projects of South Bronx. Anyways any color or race can live in a project if there poor. Even white.

I dont think projects should be done away with but they definitely need a big change since they arent helping but are cess pools for crime. Unfortunately, in Memphis, government tore down all of the housing projects in the city, unleashing thousands to live in other parts of the city. It is now infested with gang crime, not just in the 'bad' areas of town, but everywhere. It is so dangerous now that people are leaving by the droves. They should have left the projects standing, at least to keep the crime contained and out of the nice areas of town.

I was in New Orleans in May and went to what used to be the Flordia project I was so surprised and disgusted that they were demolishing ALL of the homes, even though ONLY the first floors had any damage.

Check right I grew up in Father Panic Village Projects. In Bridgeport Connecticut. I Lived in the section that was called the hole. Theres not a high-riser housing project nearly as dangerous and Ghetto and befin with P.T. projects right Down the block 476 people were murdered during that war that lasted 2 months. knocking down projects in the past has caused more crime. The difference between pre-Katrina New Orleans and post Katrina is the crime was more isolated before, and now its spread out all over the city. No place is truly 100% safe.
