I have never seen opera and know little of classical music. This is the first time I have seen or heard of Maria Callas.... She is Magnificent !!! The only thing better than her prescence is her voice. In this clip, she is the essence of woman. I have a new passion.
If today's singers had a bit of Maria Callas, ... only a LITTLE... then maybe turning on the radio wouldn't be an auditory-rape. COME BACK MARIA CALLAS! COME BAAAAAAAAACK.... : /
ok so number one, did she actually mixed up the lyrics at the beginning and still managed to correct it by actually making a rime herself?how incredible is that???
and number two, I just love how at the end of the ouverture she's like ok can I sing now and blow you all away?=P
The best of the best... First I enjoy the overture watching Maria looking like a Greek goddess with that smile and the movement of her eyebrows with that presence and elegance that only Maria had... and then when she starts singing, I forget everything that surrounds me and my ears are hypnotized with the magic of her voice... BRAVO MARIA!
Callas was in love with music: She was extraordinarily intelligent. Her only authentic connection with people was when she sang. Her relationships with men were shambolic. Her relationship with an audience was pure intimacy. Her relationship with herself was one of emotional separation. I love hearing her sing; her voice is just something else.
@PisceanBeautyy ...I'll say I could well imagine her in pyjamas eating her dry toast and laughing a dirty laugh with the toast still between her lips and tears welling up at my impersonation of Fidel Castro.

@PisceanBeautyy Absolutely. It is one of my favorite things about this clip actually. By her expressions, it is almost like the music is "building" in her, soon to be let out through her vocals.
agreed. spinto soprano, possibly, but dramatic coloratura? HELL no, she ruined her voice with all that bellini and donnizetti. callas was between soprano and mezzo so, naturally, as the voice lowered with age, she should have dipped down to the mezzo work more. she would have made a FABULOUS Verdian mezzo singing Azucena, Eboli and Amneris.
I want to explain my previous comment, because somebody did not understand the real meaning of it, it was written completely by irony. Callas is my ABSOLUTE favorite singer and I ADORE her art :)
Pretre and his orchestra were really excellent . But who is this lady? look at her, no voice, no feelings , no emotion and first of all no expression at all :) Brava Callas!!!
She mucks up a huge amount of words, but she sings wonderfully!!!

Is it just me, but I noticed Madame Callas forgot a line after listening for several counts? Anyway, habanera will always be my favorite of Callas.

I don't know enough to judge the voice quality, except to say that it's excellent. The presence though...incredible!
