I remember as a child in Fort Worth (I think it was 1980) we started getting large baseball size hail. One broke my bedroom window while I was sleeping (yes it scared the shit out of me). After it was over the whole neighborhood went outside to survey the damage, and people who left their cars outside were just destroyed.

I believe in the beginning when the hail started and was huge you were probably in the bear's cage of the storm. which can sometimes have high winds, tornadoes, and damaging hail.

We had golf ball sized hail and it ruined my dad's beautiful Firebird while parked, it had dents all over it. I would think if you were driving at the time the dents would be worse. Other than the damage they cause hailstorms are fun stuff :)

This is exciting and cool to watch, but if I was in that car I wouldn't be shouting with delight, or referring to the hail as "nice".

Any dents can be left in the car body (which could be shown off later as evidence of the storm the car had endured) but cracked and broken windows I'm sure are not legal, and would have to be replaced. And that won't be cheap, even if insurance paid for some of it.

You can see why people sometimes are killed in hailstorms if they can't reach shelter.

I actually tried to intercept this storm, it was one of my first times going out to chase. It looked promising on the radar and up close, but only produced one weak rain-wrapped tornado near Aledo, TX. The hailstorm alone was worth witnessing! luckily I found an old gas station to park under before the core of the storm passed over. Unfortunately, I had to follow it all the way back home to Fort Worth, at about 30 miles an hour.

Holy shit I was on that same road this very day. I live out in Aledo and I wanted to see the tornado so I hopped in my truck and headed west on I-20 and then all hell broke loose. The rain was so heavy you could'nt see the lines on the freeway and I was getting run off the road by 18 wheelers. We were moving at about 30 mph and then the wind gusts kicked up to about 80 mph and I was really getting tossed around. I saw a few funnels but never saw a tornado touchdown.
