  • Bass needs tuning...BADLY

  • that Bass is way off in the end, other than that, this rocked and ruled!

  • "All of us are in the gutter but some of us are looking at the stars".--Oscar Wilde

  • great band made it through some tough times....pretenders rock!!!!

  • What guitar is James Honey-Man Scott playing here?

  • Damn she looks good.

  • The main reason this song is so amazing: the drummer. LOVE LOVE LOVE this song and this live version is perfection. Thanks for posting!

  • she,s sooooo ........................... geil _*

  • Happy Birthday Chrissie

  • a lot of rock songs referenced Brigitte Bardot

  • @Tigerlily21 Brigitte Bardot? She was a babe when being called a babe was still in style.

  • Wow, did you notice that half-step screw up by their guitarist at :19? Doh!

  • @waszma nope he was just 2 years shy of it. Had he made 27 he would probably have been more widely known

  • I remember Andy's stupid original into. I don't get the whole 'comic genius' thing with him.

  • the best song i love !. the old friday show was the best. snl was at a bad time. this was before eddid murphy!!

  • Is this James Honeyman Scott on lead guitar in this video? If so, it's sad because sixteen months he would be found dead.

  • @eyesthatshine That is Scott yeah. Talented dude...unfortunate. I wonder if he was 27...

  • She is amazing ALWAYS her own person!!

  • OK it would be 'The Adultress'

  • We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.

Lord Darlington, Act III - Oscar Wilde!

  • I remember seeing this when it was live on TV, including Andy's weird intro to the first song that had Chrissie in the background looking confused and pissed off. Never knew what to expect with Andy Kaufman!

  • @Tracymmo i posted that first intro as well, very awkward and awesome

  • @basetapes I missed that upload. Must go find it! Thanks for putting this stuff online. And is it just me, or should someone really think twice before pissing off Chrissie Hynde?

  • @basetapes Which song was it? Would like to see that. Thanks for posting this. I was just watching Bargain Hunt and a guy on the losing team said 'Some of us are born in the gutter, some of us looking at the stars' ....... or however it goes! :)

  • @basetapes oh, Chrissie, talk to me darlin', every man every woman, the reason we're here, to help each other, it's good, good, good..... take care of each other, say I love you.....a message of love! what a wonderful world it would be.....

  • Jesus she's hot. Real talent here.

  • Is that the episode where coffman fucked up the skits by being his dweeby self. What a dork he was.

  • Absolutely brilliant. One of the best tunes ever.

  • So good. Uh: Does Chrissie have a forehead?

  • bass has treble turned up to sharpen notes. Listen to Tim Bogart and others with tonals they use in performances. Yeah, he makes a couple mistakes on notes but that's what live performances are about. Enjoy the video for what it is. There won't be another one like it again.

  • i love you japan. get well soon.

  • Rock and Roll is Cool.

  • Getting through the tough stuff with love. Standing Up for those I love!

  • F-ing great. It can't get any better than this.

  • more classic than classic.

  • Wow, mvs784, you are completely wrong.

Chrissie married Ray Davies from the Kinks. He's still alive. She also married Jim Kerr from Simple Minds. He's still alive.

She dated Pete Farndon in the early days of the group. He was later kicked out of the group because of a heroin addiction. That's what killed him. James Honeyman-Scott was married to somebody else not Chrissie. He also died from drugs. In his case it was cocaine.

  • @gkctex Chrissie and Ray never married. However, they did have a daughter, Natalie Ray, together in 1983.

  • sad she is labed "the black widow" married 1 band member ,he die's , then marries another ,again that member dies !

  • @mvs784 Please check your facts, mvs784 -- these things did not happen; perhaps you're confusing Chrissie with someone known less for music than for drama.

  • Released for valentines day in 1981, remember dj Simon Bates, Andy Peebles or someone saying that at the time on Radio One-yes they did once play proper music.

  • Bass is on, the frequency plays with your ears. DUH

If you played, you would understand the phenomenon

  • Bass is on, the frequency plays with your ears. DUH

  • What year was this?

  • Nah - bassist is out. Too much high can make the sound as well. Im sitting w/bass. with digital tuner.......hes out . Makes it hard to jam with!

  • The real band...this is awesome.

  • If you thumbed this down, stick the thumb back up your ass where it belongs.

  • Wow...Andy Kaufman AND James Honeyman Scott both still with us......PRICELESS!!

  • double damn sexy

  • is it just me or does that bass sound out of tune?

  • @CommBreakDown i'm agreeeeeee....O_O

  • @CommBreakDown you are right, I've ever noticed it!

  • @CommBreakDown It's not just you.

  • @CommBreakDown its not just you. I commented a long time ago about that very thing. I think they were rushed and he couldnt tune up, or he was just out of it and flailing along. Pete was a darn good bass player, shame.

  • Do you guys know who is the Show Host?; well, you know, that is fucking Andy Kaufman, the comic genius himself . You, the younger generation who is always trying to decode the Universe, please, check on this guy, if you don't know who the fuck he was (he is fucking dead).

  • @Gilbert2112 he used to do good elvis impersonations

  • Chrissie was quite striking then!

  • rock on Chrissie

  • GREAT VID!!!!!

  • Even with Andy kauffman this is still a good video

  • Comment removed

  • We fall, but we keep gettin' up.

  • wow,I needed that.

  • Just amazing!

  • Outstanding performance...wow....thanks for posting! :)

  • oh my freggin god this rocks.! how does she make her voice sound so windy.?

  • get enough heroin into your arm and that bass sounds fine.

  • Farndon is soooo out of tune...wow...love the original Pretenders.

  • this is the shit man... inspiring...:)

  • oh its good good good! liek brigette bardo!!1

  • that's Chrissie in her "raccoon" period :))

    absolutely love her!

  • One of my favorite bands. Cool Andy Kaufman introduced!

  • Wonderful performance, thanks for posting this!

  • Wonderful :-)

  • Awesome hip movement Chrissy!

  • Comment removed

  • Chrissie IS strong and will always will be ..

  • Chrissie.... you are the sexiest girl in the world!!!!!

  • Andy Kaufman looks and acts so normal here. "Fridays" had some impressive musical guests, I just finished watching the two "Fridays" appearances by the Jam and to follow them with the classic Pretenders lineup is so cool.

  • Martin Chambers has always been someone that I've loved to watch -- he absolutely attacks the drums.

  • Fridays had the best bands of any show!

  • James Honeyman Scott to me is one of the most inventive guitar players ever, up there with Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Andy Summers, The Edge... new sounds from distant galaxies, brilliant. I truly love every note he plays..

  • Despite Fardon's drug problems, he still manages to play well, sing AND chew gum all at the same time in this clip! haha

  • Farndon a bit out of tune here?

  • @gyrate4 Sounds like it...PEACE.

  • @gyrate4 I've always said that about this video...lol someones out of tune...

  • @gyrate4 He's in tune - He just went one fret too high on one chord. We all have our bad days.

  • Comment removed

  • @AnitaJust Sorry that is indeed Pete Farndon as this came out a few years before he passed away.

  • @AnitaJust That's Pete Fardon.

  • @gyrate4 its due to the uploading , compresion I have heard it on several tracks on the bass from several differant groups

  • @mhuki Maybe a video compression issue, but it seems likely that the other instruments, and vocals, would pitch or up or down to match the bass. No reason for video compression to single out the bass.

  • love the armband on farndon.......horse anyone?

  • I love this, thank you for posting.

  • If this was ever a justification for standing back and acknowledging what you have now. The Pretenders must have been one of the best bands around in the early 1980s, but fell victim of substance misuse. Congratulations Chrissie Hynde for what you achieved; greatness beckoned, but your glory was that you couldn't make it w/o James and Pete.

  • Always loved them. Chrissie is a phenomenal writer and artist!

  • Farndon's just blowing shit away, and the inimitable James Honeyman Scott!

They were really taken before their time. RIP.

  • super video :-))

  • Chrissie is IT!!!!!

  • super video:-))

  • pure raw talent. nothing like this today

  • I know we as people tend to deify(is that a word?) "stars" who died too young, but honestly- back then as a young man coming up, I just thought there was no one cooler on the planet than Pete Farndon and The Honey Man-I know the Brits called him "honeymun"-but maybe due to my Southern roots I always called him the Honey Man-like it had more than one meaning-the music from his guitar was sweet as honey, he looked like a real good guy and I always figured Chrissy referred to him as her honey man

  • Farndon's outta tune bass *almost* makes this unwatchable for me. Otherwise great!

  • Andy was great!! Original and funny most of the time.

  • rush limbaugh's neo nazi show's theme is "my city was gone".

had no idea she was a neo nazi. you'd think she'd be smart enough to not perpetuate the negative stereotype of rockers as political hicks.

  • @funkbebe oh relax and enjoy the video you liberal f*ck..

  • bass is really out of tune here

  • bass is really out of tune here

  • @stratdaddy89 just a tad...but the mixer has the bass up to high, which doesnt help

  • OH MAN! This is just killer. I actually recall the night I saw this.. and I was blown away. I wanted to be a rock star from then on out! It makes me kinda' sad though looking at it now.. I was crushed when James Honeyman Scott died.. he was so unique and awesome. This original band to me is one of the best of all time. Nothing speaks perfection like their first 2 albums. I would put 'em against anything.

  • Scott fucks up at 0:20 - he was good but he seemed to be inconsistent live - was this due to stage fright, or sloppiness, or narcotics, I wonder?

  • 1981 on the show "Fridays"

    Sweet....

  • how die the pretenders guys die? they were so great when they passed the band went downhill

  • hynde said she had genuine musical affinity with honeyman-scott, and she liked farndon's energy... the pretenders fired farndon because of drugs, and shortly after that honeyman-scott died of "cocaine intolerance." he was really young, not even 30. hynde said her musical style changed because of honeyman-scott's melodic style. she was more of a punk rocker before him.

  • Chrissie is HOT~~~

  • The Pretenders Original Lineup were:

    Chrissie Hynde

    Martin Chambers

    James Honeyman- Scott

    Pete Farndon

  • Yay!!! James Honeyman Scott rocking the guitar!!

  • The message is that they make gorgious music.....MORE fantastic `80`s music on my channel!!!!

  • Dammit, Chrissie was hot....

  • THIS IS THE PRETENDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • RIP the wonderful Pete Farndon who passed away on April 14 1983. Pete was a one of kind, a true rocker...

  • @nastynigel He was fabulous, his basslines really made the song.

  • I was 21 then and regret not seeing them live when I could. Advice to young people: see your favorite bands live when you can. They won't be together [or with us] forever.

  • I agree,but I was in the gutter back then....lol

  • I always thought the bass player was a woman. lol. He looks like a lesbian.

  • Pete and Chrissie were a hot item...Notice how he could chew gum, play bass and keep an eye on her at the same time!

  • James Honeyman Scott playing a Ted Newman Jones guitar. Made in Austin ,Texas-

  • omg Chrissie Hynde's so beautiful..

  • @PPMcky

Hey, man, she is fucking gorgeous, sexy , hot and , above all, a total femme. Now, some people think she is a strong minded person and a little bet pushy, but NOT. Back on the day, when I was starting my Production company, I had the pleasure to register some footage of the band's tour, and let me tell you, if you ever have the chance tp meet her, you would like to marry her......she is fucking AWSOME!!!!

  • Chrissie Hynde still kicks some serious ass.

  • Andy Kaufman looking like Krist Novoselic...

  • I don't go for Chrisse Hynde normally but I fucking would after watching her here

  • Lol, looks like Ralph Machio playing bass.

    Best Pretenders song

  • "Machio" looks doped up.............rip

  • LOL

  • Pete Farndon, the bass player, and James "Honeyman" Scott, the guitar player, each died of heroin overdoses within a couple of years of this. RIP is right.

  • she wrote so many great songs after this I lost count.

  • Hottest fricken Band ever!!

Sorry I fricken LOVE the Pretenders and Chrissie,... since the day!!!

  • the bass is out of tune!!

  • gOOGLE

(-: THE REASON WE'RE HERE says THE SCOLE GHOSTS :-)

  • What a great song that holds up today. Chrissy is so sexy! The whole song just bounces!

  • Is the bass sharp or am I just hearing things?

  • Know what you mean. I ran into that myself, using a chorus like the EH Small Clone that wasn't designed for bass. Weren't many bass effects then so you picked up what was available, i.e. guitar effects and tried getting them to work.

  • I think its a result of the uploading , a little compression happens

  • Yea someone didnt bother tuning......considering the amount of drugs both the guitarist and bass player were taking at the time....Im suprized they got that close in tune. Sad to think of all the songs they didnt get to write....

  • Yeah, the bass sounds sharp to me too.

  • The best, most energetic Pretenders song in the Farndon-Honeyman Scott era. The bass line and the lead guitar are killers.

  • Chrissy is the only one with any special talent. Great vocals, great song.

  • You aren't a huge fan of her politics...isn't she a pretty rational liberal? Are you a Limbaugh fan or something?

  • She is easily the sexiest Rock Chick ever!

    Note:

republicans go on sesame street pages to bitch and moan....they are ALL limbaugh fans. one party - one opinion - one voice - one news source - saves the energy of thinking.

  • WOW... that is odd... you're right on all levels stated. Monica... All that she has to do now, is beat the living Cr@P out of Beck et al, with her guitar, (Beck will start crying, of course) and perhaps the populous will get back to normal... I'm in, for the helping, on that. The Pretenders are important... and She is they...

  • @monicasuetannehill Chrissie Hynde would definitely confront conflict but not create, as you try here in a forum to honor her work. Do you like her music or her kick ass attitude about her personal views. If it's the latter, why don't you take it somewhere else where it can be appreciated. This is about the music.

  • cchmfla - thanks, and I agree. I did not start it - if you had scrolled back, you would see that musicjew was responding to the person who did start it, and I was merely supporting musicjews opinion and pointing out how typical this is from the right. It is about the music - and she does KICK ASS and I confront - not initiate. Happy New Year - everyone. Peace Out!

  • Sad to think that in two years half the band would be dead due to drugs.

It would be great to see the original line up

  • Yeah ,shame ,some of these cats thought they had the same stamina as

Iggy & Richards. Pop weas just plain lucky,

Richards had the devil watching over him,

and had 'H Quality" dope, most of the time.

Johnny Thunders, another sad loss from those days.

  • @PAULLONDEN well put Bro...

Worked a club here in NYC and Thunders would stumble in...

    A sad sight.

    Great guitarist

  • @pawnsacrifice1 Chissie's sound lives on to this day, saw them last year at House of Blues, and they really could not have sounded better.

  • What's also creepy is to see Andy Kaufman introducing them. James died in '82, Pete in '83 and Andy in '84. Three young talents who did not make it to the middle of the decade. Andy was already in his 30's and did not die of drugs but cancer which is even more sad.

  • @DeathMetalDouglas68

Yeah, kind of scary that all 3 died within 2 years of each other. Wow....

  • @edcrawf- What do you mean all 3 died, Farndon and Scott died within a year, but Chrissie and Chambers are still with us. Just wondering

  • @Shamrock3939 I pretty sure the 3rd they are referring to is Andy Kaufman

  • @basetapes I see. that makes sense, thanks for clearing that up.

  • @Shamrock3939

Yes, I mean Andy Kaufman. Sorry I didn't make that clear in the original post.

Kaufman, Farndon and Scott, all within a short span of time.

  • @pawnsacrifice1 totally agree...james honeymoon scott was one the best guitarists, and farndon with that active and driving bass. so goddamn sad.

  • Is that a puffy shirt?

  • she wore those (or maybe that particular one) everywhere from, maybe, '82 - '87

in the early '90s, she wore that black, what i want to say, v- neck tank top. mostly for acoustic sessions.

'96-'03 suit jacket, jeans, black shirt (gorgeous)

'07- present Tailcoat, tie, white vest, Road Spider Tee, skinny jeans and knee high boots. (love this setup)

the best part, the skinny jeans arent skin-tight! i hate the way skin tight jeans look because they look painful. i love jeans

  • Excellent song!

They were ahead of their time--too bad about the drugs.

    Chambers is a great drummer!

  • not a huge fan of the band or Chrissy's politics however she looks so freakin good in this video -stunningly hot.

This song has such a beautiful flowing break, the other one I like "Tatooed love boys" is actually like progressive punk rock.

Both J.H.S and Pete's performance are great, of course the guitar needs to be a bit louder and when Pete bends his strings it yanks him out of tune briefly nonetheless his tone has an excellent growl and J.H.S. played great...both good (& missed) musicians

  • I like the odd-phasing effect on her vocal

  • This is a rockin tune

  • Chrissy is an amazing writer but writing alone hardly makes for a a lengendary lineup..The original band contained the the balance of writing, musicanship and slight punkish abandon no future line up never had again...I was lucky to see them live in 1982....RIP Jame and Pete

  • I still think Pete is a wonderful bass player. He was always very economical. Never just took the easy way out and pedaled on the root note. His lines are full of unexpected counterpoint and melody. Pure genius.

  • I have that same bass (in black). Bought it in the 80's. It's a Hamer CruiseBass. They are quite rare now. Yes, it has frets. It's solid Mahogany, neck thru the body, so it has a dark, wooden sound. I guess you could say it sounds "farty", espec thru an Ampeg SVT, but it also carries itself quite nice in a mix. I still use it.

I don't think Pete's out of tune here, he's just playing sloppy and bending up on the string too much. Some of his notes that are fretted the same are in key.

  • Pete is out of tune. The mix on the whole group is terrible. There is nothing wrong with his performance.

  • Frandrups bass is sooo frikin outta tune! or he was tone deaff as well as dead.

  • It's not so much that it's out of tune. It's that he's playing one of those horrendous fretless electrics that were de rigueur in the '80s.

  • i RE WATCHED IT AND IT LOOKS LIKE IT HAS FRETS, BUT CRISSY NEVER LIKED HIM ANYWAY AND HIS PLAYING IS SUBPAR EVEN IF HE WAS A JUNKIE.

  • Could be right. Though it really has that farty fretless sound, no? A friend of mine had a fretless that still had the fret wires on the neck -- they were just flush with the neck. Anyways ... great performance by every one else. RIP James H. Scott.
