  • that dragging note is insanely long....holyy.....

  • I come back to this video regularly, and I'm frequently telling other people to listen to it. Thank you SO much for posting this. The poem in the middle is exquisite. I will come back to this performance again... and again... and again... and again....

  • Best. Singer. Ever.

  • Absolutely beautiful. I think that was also the sickest piano solo I have ever heard.

  • Good Christ this is some drizzlin shit!

  • @nicsword1

what does that even mean :p

  • @ArthurKaletzky is the Sufi poem a verse by Rumi? I looked through my books but couldn't find the source. No matter. What a triple treat this is: the song, the poem and the piano. I love seeing Elling work and work out the dynamics and drama of the poetic text. What a fine interpretation. A million thanks for posting this.

  • Ah, this is the kind of performance that makes me wish I lived next door to a jazz club. I'd be there al the time if I could hear & see performers like these!

  • Exquisite...magical rendition.

  • no way he hit/ held that note ><

  • Is the world returns to the beautiful? :-)

  • 8-25- 9:36 = most epic goose bumbps ever

  • the complete singer, smiles all the time and sings like hi telling fairy tale

  • definately like good red wine. Warm, scented, deep body.

Today after a couple of weeks with one of Kurt's CD's I have been able to enjoy without distraction. Feels rich, yes like wine, yet no nasty hangover. Notes and parts of songs remain in my mind. So pleased to have followed through from a TV presentation to buying his CD.

  • -chills-

    p.s- cool "pat riley" hairstyle

  • que barbaridad,que belleza !!!! Kurt y Lawrence y mùsicos !!!

  • Sensacional, simplemente sensacional

  • I am a vocal-jazz listener, I sing and love hearing people singinging... But the love i feel for Kurt's art of vocal is endless... He's definitely not a simple singer, but a complete artist...

  • Okay...from 7:00-7:50....PURE GENIUS. Absolutely breathtaking...what a talent to have!! Congratulations!!!

  • Espectacular , el vocalista es asombroso , y obviamente el trio tambien ... me encantó !!!

  • I have been on this earth for 60 years and a great and faithful fan of jazz and have adored the wonders of Sinatra, Ella, Nancy Wilson, Sarah Vaughn, Dakota Staton, Gloria Lynne, Ellington, all of them but have NEVER heard of Kurt Elling until today stumbling upon him on YouTube! I am a fan!!

  • This guy is so talented he would remain gigless here on this "American Idiot" stage

in our suffering USA. Club owners would be like, "You sing too good, so pack your shit and get out."

  • @PamminAlong...

"The scene is set for dreamin'

Your love is knocking at the door

You warm my heart, i'm reluctant to start

    'cause we've been here before."

  • Does anyone know what the heck he is singing? The first 40 seconds are unintelligible. Thinking of sing this, but can't figure out the words. Any help is greatly appreciated!

  • @PamminAlong The verse:

The scene is set for dreaming, love is knocking at the door,

But oh my heart, I'm reluctant to start

    For we've been here before

The chorus lyrics are all over the web: just look.

I've transcribed the Sufi solo, if you need that, ask here or send me a message.

  • @ArthurKaletzky Hi, do you think you could send me a copy of that transcription please?

  • i'm dying to listen those last seconds man

  • OHh, Lawrence & Kurt...i love you !

    everyday...almostofthetime. namaste man1

  • How can anyone hear this man sing this song and not fall a bit in love with him.

  • I just listened to this rendition of on of my fav. song. it's bill evans that i ve listed to all my life. but this is just so good/ dif...........listen to his release on 1.18 so sweet ! Bill would have appreciated that one........I love you tube. Look what it's brought to me.

MY FOREVER GRADITUDE [oops need spell chk. if you really want to sound sincere} spelling right or wrong I do mean it ..thanks

  • Great Voice!

  • AND AGAIN!!!!!!

  • I love that part... ( again, again and again ....) it's so beautiful...

  • Hobgoods solo is amazing. the half steps are adorable =)

  • I just love his version of this song. I saw him live in Brisbane at the Tivoli Theatre a few years ago and was lucky enough to meet him afterwards. He is a really lovely, laid back guy and a very snappy dresser! He had the most beautiful shoes on.

  • look at the happiness in his eyes as he finishes the song.

    BEST EVER MALE JAZZ SINGER

  • @chickenman1993 He has a lot of talent. but maybe he ought to work his way out of his Mark Murphy bag before crowning him?

  • @ajack2boys Mark Murphy is an excellent singer, but I've never heard Mark Murphy sing like this. Mark Murphy is definitely one of the influential ingredients in Kurt Elling, but so are many other people. I'm not quite sure whether you mean that he's emulating Mark Murphy or that he can never meet up to Mark Murphy's level, but Kurt Elling's got his own style and he's definitely not competing with one of his influences. Why invent a competition that isn't there?

  • @SuperGamer87 Good point. However crowning him the GOAT is a more futile statement than saying he hasn't work his way out of Mark Murphy's bag imo!

  • @chickenman1993 that happiness is soul, being content with what you have and KNOWING you are blessed. HALLELUJAH!

HALO = a glow or ring of light around a head or person in art

    (wikipedia)

  • @chickenman1993 he is the best because he is using his voice similar as a virtuoso using his/her instrument...

  • @kingofskateop and this is like a shit if the virtuosism is not a reserch but only dust in your eyes (excuse me for the eventuale bad english)

  • Just class

  • WOW.

  • lol Kurt Elling he looks like Willem Dafoe :P

    His voice is GREAT!

  • This is my fav. Kurt Elling video to show when introducing people to him who have never heard him before.

I also am a youth worker and I work with teens. I show them how he sings and they actually dig it.

Planting the seeds in the minds of the youth...it's a good thing!

  • Omg omg.... I was SO INTO it, and then the video cut out on his final note!! *heartbroken*

  • ummmmm 4 people obviously missed the like button...

  • How could anyone ever dislike this?

  • Kurt is the Bomb! Exremely groovey!

  • simply amazing!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Unbelievable... the man sounds like a combination of Frank Sinatra and Stevie Wonder!

  • @tylerdenning So true! Just found out about him a few days ago and can't get enough.

  • Amazing Keyboard player also...love it :)

  • this man is inspiring. His voice is so beautiful and his expression so heartfelt. And wow, he really has some kinda lung power there! Just amazing.

  • this song is gorgeous

  • WOW,, WOW, WOW, what a nice voice!! Superb musicians

  • perfect piano line... :)

  • this man is one of the greats.. :)

  • Words fail me...awesome, superb, thrilling...my Buddha, he is the song and the music! Elling leaves Sinatra in his wake as he soars into the melodic universe. I have been listening to jazz for nearly 70 years...Kurt Elling is the pinnacle jazz singer bar none!

Whoever posted this, my deep thanks!

BTW Lawrence Hobgood draws Ellings musical chariot across the sky! Sorry to wax metaphoric but he does that to me! LOL!

  • tell me he doesn't look a little like Tommy Lee Jones.

  • @volcanlatino05

    He doesn't! L(OL!

  • Argh i can't believe it cuts off at the end! So amazing...is there a complete version out there?

  • This is great and I've loved his voice for years... missed him last year in London... was gutted!!!

Would someone PLEASE post him singing, "The Very Thought Of You" if they have it... it's a heart stopper!

  • i love this video! Thanks for posting it! I wish it had the ending of LH's solo though!! The band just swings so good and Laurence Hobgood and Kurt Elling are just in tune with each other, which is what makes this movie extra special. Great arrangement, great players and great passion/soul/heart.

  • That touched his mouth...

The Moon was once a Moth

    Who flew to her lover;

See how her body-less glowing soul rises in the night,

    To find him again.

    And again,

    And again...

  • The Moon was once a Moth Who flew to her lover; Fluttering from silence she danced. Splashing and diving in the warming display of his Light... They embraced, And she passed into death. With ecstasy dissolving her body, in a thousand sighing smiles... Her limbs, fell softly to Earth, to sanctify the night meadows; Angels came to bury the limbs that touched his mouth, That touched his mouth... That touched his mouth...
  • he sings so passionately, no wonder he looks really happy :')

  • omg, at 1:49. amazing.

  • Anybody know the drummers name? I think I met him at the Village Vanguard a week or so ago but I can't be sure.

  • I fell in love with this arrangement from hearing it on Live In Chicago. He tells the tale epically every time he sings it. Hobgood is just totally in touch with him. The muted Bb's are haunting.

  • I really miss catching him [Kurt Elling] at the Mill on Wednesdays here in Chicago. I guess all good things come to an end. But he's going to be home for the 32nd annual Chicago Jazz Fest over the Labor Day weekend. You can bet your most prized possession that I'll be there!

  • AMAZING. That man has soul, dripping all off of him.

  • DID YOU HEAR THAT NOTE AT 8:00????? mmm

  • In my eyes. . . after 40 some years of being a jazz afficianado . . . He is the current "jazz Singer's . . Jazz singer" . . .

  • Bob Parlocha turned me on to Kurt just after his second album hit in 1997. Seen him several times live including New Years Eve at The Greenmill in Chicago. My wife and I love this man for sharing his gift.

  • And people think Buble is good ~ yah whatever

  • The best thing I've ever seen on Youtube! I'm serious. I'd turn gay for him!

  • Predivna pesma...Hvala ti!! R.

  • 7:45-8:03 is very, very nice. I always loved this song. Check out my page OmoraInfinity. Please leave a comment.

  • magic..

  • Hearing him for the first time and its great...

  • I love this man...... He is sooooo great!!!!

  • Saw him at UCLA today with the Monterey Jazz Festival. He is so awesome! The drummer Jonathan Blake was great too.

  • he is so good... just saw him on tv for the first time... fascinating, though I am not really into this kind of music...

  • amazing, incredible...

  • WHATS THE PIANIST"S NAME??????????

  • @texmex7557 my bad i found it

  • Comment removed

  • One day I will play the piano like Laurence Hobgood... I wish! This performance is mesmerising. Like all the videos of Kurt Elling, I find I can't stop watching it. His expression and dynamics are so incredible and intense. He truly does 'feel' the music and uses his voice as an instrument.

  • If you ever have the chance to see him live, do it. If you're looking for a great time - he'll take you where you need to go. If you're going through any rough period in life, this man will take care of you. I think that you could take just about anyone to see him live - regardless of their taste in music - and they would be captivated. Some of the greatest music, period. Glad he's around.

  • great performance

  • 5 stars, marvellous

  • Damn! Love this guy love this band!

  • Great....really great!!!

  • PFFFF!! Excelente !!!

Estaba estudiando este tema, buscando alguna versión para conocerlo y la verdad que grata sorpresa me llevé... qué animalada!

  • Kurt Elling sound even better live. It's like something from God. He used to sing at the Green Mill in Chicago every week. Lawrence Hobgood is equally as amazing.

  • @MRSBRETTFAVRE: Well said

  • Krut plays each instrument with his incredible voice. Love him!

  • there's a real honesty in his voice and as rich and "in the style" as it is, its sounds first and foremost like him telling a story.

  • Mr Elling, you have mesmerised me, this performance is so wonderful, goose - bumpy and toe curlingly fantastic.

I have to watch at least once a day to get my fix! Will I ever recover? - Hope Not.

  • he is completely AMAZING!!! what a fantastic artist!!

  • Control is outta this world.

  • this Artist is not from this planet. Not possible to work more and better the concept, the technique, the music, the mise en scene, the spirit, the team work ...so much respect for the audience thrills me an moves me... No es de este planeta este Artista. No se puede trabajar más y mejor el concepto , la técnica, la puesta en escena, el espíritu, la música , el trabajo en equipo ...me sobrecoge y me emociona tanto respeto por el público. uffff

  • I agree - Though I have listened to him for years I was able for the first time to listen to him perform live last year and I was not disappointed.

  • what does he sing in the beginning? i dont get it.

  • This time it's love, my foolish heart ( ;A;)g

  • Oh, ne'er mind--I got his name: the pianist's name is Mr. Lawrence...something French.

  • His name is Lawrence Hobgood. He's been playing and arranging songs for Kurt Elling for a long time. And his name's ain't french at all ;-)

  • That Kurt--never fails to please my ears. Who's the pianist?

  • I heard him perform this rendition in Philadelphia 3 years ago and it was amazzzzzzing - that note at 7:35 still gives me goosebumps. He has such a gift!!!

  • wow just wow, have not seen or heard Kurt play this before must say I am taken away!

  • best music ever of anything ever regarding music and musical talent

    jazz

    ahhhhhwipaughrnjdkg;'euahvnouhiesn

  • who is the drummer??

  • yeah. great drummer.

  • i am pretty sure it is kobie watkins. either him or ulysses owens jr. those are the two guys who usually play with him.

  • it is not kobie watkins

  • i've seen him perform this live too many times to count, and he never ceases to amaze me... absolutely untouchable. the man is amazing.

  • Unusual rendition. Wonderful and fresh. Bravo Kurt!

  • Thank God for Kurt Elling's wonderful gift ...

The best and sexiest rendition of this great song.

    I love, love, love it.

  • oh i would trade anything to have a talent like him..

  • I love this man! He makes it look so easy...

  • DAMN!! Just Damn!! That was spectacular!!

  • i love this video....haha around 9:00... WATCH OUT! I imagine some guy getting up during the performance about to get hit by the door on his way out.

  • i know... Watch Out! love it and the whole thing.

  • awesome! thats bloody awesome!

  • his voice is fascinating. Watching him live, you can tell he loves jazz even after years of doing it. His band is incredible as well! Glad my friend told me about him recently.

  • @passionsf I cant believe that no one has caught the Ahmad Jamal tribute. Kenny Washington is amazing. Kurt. You have made a many anniversery's so memorable. Thank you so much for being you, in the music!!

  • this is why i love vocal jazz ... keep 'em comin'!!!

  • I just can't get enough. I'll have to post a video of me singing this, even though I can't compare.

  • Probably not the place to say it, but. . . .

    I LOVE YOU, KURT!

    *sigh*

  • Bravo Monsiuer Elling! Love the build from And Again...what the climatic finish. Wow!

  • KE has won Downbeat's critics' poll for the past 10 years & JazzTimes' for the past 3, and was voted the Jazz Journalists Association's Male Singer of the Year for the 5th time running. Jazz Review said that "Elling may be the greatest male Jazz singer of all time." He been nominated for a Grammy 7 years in a row, and his new CD, Dedicated to You: Kurt Elling Sings the Music of Hartman and Coltrane has recently hit #1 on JazzWeek's chart.

  • Comment cont'd...

I have seen Kurt perform many times, including at Carnegie Hall when he hosted Nancy Wilson's 75th birthday concert at her request. I have no doubt that Sassy, Ella and June would agree with her that he is not only a great jazz artist in his own right, but their heir apparent.

  • Comment removed

  • ...who do you think you are? It would seem appropriate for you to criticize someone like Kurt Elling if you were more talented. Something tells me you're not, which is why you're watching this performance on your computer. man. no respect, no class.

  • Yeah, thats why he packs in concert hall after concert hall, while you sit at home chocking the chicken, you would not know jazz style if it bit you on the ass you loser!!!!!!

  • I'm just saying, It doesn't do it for me.

  • Fabulous post ....My Foolish Heart is a song near and dear to my heart........ty........a very interesting arrangement, but enjoyable !....5*

  • his voice has such an incredible purity. His vibrato seems to invest the listeners. he's an artist.

  • sorry charlie, you are comparing an apple to an orange, to completely different styles. compare pop with pop and jazz with jazz next time. Kurt is clearly one of the greats of the male jazz vocalists.

  • What is the song he starts singing at 4:30, this is awesome. Anyone?

The melody line is like... mmm... Lol.

  • @TheGodin It's a poem by Rabi'a of Basra, a Sufi mystic from the 8th century. I think it might be in Elling's book 'Lyrics'. It's awesome how it fits so beautifully with Hobgood's playing.

  • does anyone else think that, somehow, whenever he goes off pitch, its on purpose? like right at the beginning at :34 seconds, it's awful, but somehow still good.

  • I noticed that too - I'm not sure it was intentional, but he brings it back from the brink in such a satisfying way.

  • it is intentional. It's called pitch bending I think. It's very common in jazz.

  • it seems like he doesn't quite get it all the way back up. it's the only thing in any of his songs that i don't like. i think. i guess i still like it. ha.

  • the pitch at 0:34 definitly not intented. But normally his intonation is truly amazing.

  • amo a ese pianista

  • I love how his 'scats' are beautiful poems sometimes. The riff on love in greco-roman mythology that forms the massively genius and extended solo on Body and Soul from Night Moves is one of the best things I've ever heard!

    Don't think he's a smoker that's for sure!

  • I LOVE HIM..A GREAT JAZZSINGER!!!!

  • I don't think you understand the concept of "genres" of music. He is certainly a jazz singer. He sings in the style of jazz music. Pop music is something else entirely. I suggest you read up on these things before posting another asinine comment.

  • Comment removed

  • In no way he is a pop singer : 1) listen to the harmonics, they're far away from the standard Em/G/C chords you would hear in pop music. 2) you produce the energy he puts in his singing and tell me if you feel lame afterwards...

    gosh what one mustn't read...

  • Kurt live, esp. at the Green Mill in Chicago, where he rarely is anymore due to all the touring, is one of the most moving experiences this musician has ever had.

  • He is what he is...a jazz singer...a musician of timings....love is phrasing....a bit cheezy but nevertheless it takes thecnique....

  • Best Singer in the World <3

  • I wish jazz audiences didn't need to applaud after every solo for this reason. There is an amazing moment in MFH as they transition from the poem back into the tune (approx 7:30-8:30). Kurt ends his high note and they return to the tune, but still in the style and mood of the middle section! Then they expand so joyously back to the opening style. The applause only sectionalizes the tune even as they are weaving it so beautifully into one. Trivializes it. Let them finish, then show your approval.

  • I kind of agree. It's like when someone starts talking in the car right when the coolest part of the song hits and you're just like "come on! couldn't you wait like two minutes before interrupting?!" It's annoying.

  • That's why Mingus asks the crowd to Hold their applase as it distracts the musicians.

I think it's people's pretentious attempt to show they know something about jazz and yeah it's super annoying. In classical circles you're not even allowed to applaud between movements let alone after a particularly rewarding crescendo or something: )

  • jazz isn't classical music. improv and spontaneity are key elements...even from an audience.

  • I was lucky enough to see Kurt at U.S.C. YEARS ago and was an instant fan! A must buy is "Kurt Elling LIVE at the Greenmill". He lived in Chicago and performs there quite often

  • how can this be cut off at the end??
