Why the hell does Travis Barker appear on every drum solo I look at? He's become the Justin Bieber of drumming. If you don't like him, why mention him?
I've seen endless clips of Buddy, but at about 6:40 into this I was almost convinced that the tape was speeded up. Then the band comes in at the same key as usual at the end and I was proven wrong. I think Buddy outdid even himself in this solo. This is beyond jaw-dropping.
It seems to me very few people know the technicality of Buddy Rich. Even to this day the best drummers alive try to copy what he does at the beginning of this solo. Weckl speaks of it and Jojo Mayer has made millions marketing Buddy's technique. If you want to learn something watch this solo close... watch buddys left hand at 0:24, 0:33, and the most clearly at 0:50. Not only are his chops out of this world, but his musicality and sense of phrasing are perfect. Nobody has compared ever since!!
I've just watched a couple of clips of Dylan Elise, all that was missing was him balancing a ball on his nose when he played. Better than Buddy Rich ? Sorry mate No Way !!!
I've never seen someone with such sharp control of raw chops. That snare deal where he slowly creeps toward the rim gets me EVERY time. Truly a legend, no one will ever play quite like Buddy did.
I really admire Buddy Rich, because he was a true musician in my opinion. He went up there and did it the way HE saw it, and never aplogized for it. I mean, I just read an old interview about his view on things back in the day, and a lot of the stuff he critized, I sort of exemplar ha. One of the things he said was a "basic kit" actually being perfect. Me not having a"basic kit" ha. Also his view on orginality, that back then, and now I think, how kids can play with no backround and get famous
@Scarecrow6459 and with that, they can seriously lack origniality. You can practice all you want by yourself, but until you play with a band, that's how you do it. That's where you chops come from and creative taste. He said back in 1977, that it's up to a young generation to progress in creativity with anything, but he didn't see it happening. Well, he might not pyhiscally be here to see it, but I want shoe him that we can do it. That young musicans can be creatvie and accomplished muscians.
To compare Buddy with Dylan Elise is simply idiotic. Buddy never reached the level of Dylan and his ability to play EVERY genre and current drum technique incredibly well, especially at his age. There are maybe a FEW who can play like Dylan. That being said, I saw Buddy numerous times in LA. IMO he was the best, and still is, the best big band drummer ever. Nobody has surpasssed the complexity and difficulty of his charts, yet he and his band nailed them every time.
@paupur You need to reorganise your ideas. It's ridiculous to compare 'em both because Dylan is so much better than Rich that Buddy is "the best ever"? It doesn't sound right to me. I understand what you're trying to say, but it was poorly demonstrated.
A guy who, at the age hes at now, is light-years ahead of what Buddy was at the time, and who is also light-years beyond when it comes to "the ability to play every genre" AND technicaly speaking as well... and B. was "the greatest ever" because he was the greatest big band drummer? That's all? The greatest big band drummer versus the most versatile and technically proficient one? I'm not convinced.
@cadaverr lol! you both think Dylan is technically better than Buddy? Don't overestimate him until he has a few more years experience, and gained more attention.
@cadaverr You're all full of shit. To know a drummer, you have to be a drummer. Look at their versatility and technique (along with a lot of extras). Buddy brought in a load of techniques, styles and patterns to big band. Yes, he didn't play many genres, but he was amazing at styles like Jazz, and Big Band. He inspired a whole new generation including Neil Peart (who is one of the best drummers out there today). Out of fact, and not opinion, Rich was the best drummer in the 20th century.
@DirtJumpTrail I don't know what THE HELL you're talking about dude. You probably didn't understand my conversation with paupur and went full force over me with no sane reason at all. I recommend you to check the comments again so that you may (or not) fully grasp what was going on.

@paupur Buddy stated on Carson years ago about his admiration for Bruce Lee. I think many people who engage in the "who's the greatest" arguments haven't pondered that connection. The connection is about greatness. Bruce Lee is regarded by many to be the greatest martial artist ever. It wasn't because he had technical or physical superiority over ALL. Yes he was very skilled and talented and probably could hold his own in many situations, but the fact is, there were/are superior to him....>
@paupur Buddy Rich is the greatest drummer ever, not necessarily, because of technique and time, but because of the way he played, how he played, sometimes, with seemingly impossibly power, conviction and iron will, but a hell of a swing and brush technique to boot. I was fortunate to have seen Buddy and his band live a few times. Like when watching Bruce Lee on the big screen projecting such an entity-like power, Buddy Rich projected through his drums so much more than just "playing drums".
@paupur So people can argue about who's got a better feel, left hand, time, chops, a flying side kick or playing a D chord for that matter...I think there is a distinction between "Best" and "Great" In the world of drummers, Buddy's the greatest drummer that lived...
I was one of the fortunate people who were lucky enough to see the BR orchestra perform here in the UK each year from 1966.We have many wonderful moments/stories/happenings from those tours. At a concert in Nottingham, when in the first half a stick flew out of the masters hand,he came to front of stage and apologised and asked if anyone caught the stick.A young man, about 12 years, on front row, offered BR the stick, here said BR have the pair gave him the other stick off his kit.True Greatness.
Hey Cadaverr! Have you seen the video "Buddy Rich Drum Solo" uploaded by MuxMike? OMG! It's almost up there with this masterpiece. I about passed out from my senses watching that spectacle. Check it out, Bro!
@williamson609 Oh yeah, absolutely! It's one of the greatest drum solos I've ever seen, no doubt about it. There are many unbelievable BR solos out there, I've gotta tell you! You just have to search 'em right. : ]
@cadaverr You know it's one thing to see Buddy showcase his amazing chops and speed, but it's even more uncanny that he's he performing melodies that constructed very much like a song. From the begining, middle, and the end in which he signals the band to come in. Each of his lengendary solos were different: No two solos were alike. None of his solos were ever rehearsed. He was so spontaneous and creative at the same time. A hallmark of a superior drummer.
@williamson609 No doubt about it. His sense of on-the-spot composition and technical mastery never cease to amaze. He is my biggest inspiration.
Buddy could have done anything anybody else has ever done, and he could have done it better and faster and more musical with taste. Remember, the drums are musical instruments, not a stage to do chinese acrobats on. Also, this solo is just one of his everyday solos and nothing special for him. He did this every night for many, many, many years. That's another point. Try doing anything everyday for years and see if you can keep it up. And, by the way, buddy isn't even playing his fastest.

IM SORRY I DONT COMMENT MUCH BUT MY GOD THIS MAN WAS THE BEST END OF STORY. SOME MAY JUST NEVER GET IT , BUT PLEASE THEM THAT DONT, GIVE HIM SOMTHING MORE THEN HE OK OR GOOD OR GREAT PLEASE LOL.... 7 DISLIKES WOW they must have an outernet
To grasp what Buddy was all about as a musician AND a human being, read Mel Thorme´s bio on Buddy, "Traps the drum wonder" from 1992. His life was as awsome as the way he played the drums!
Thanks for posting this... give me hours of pleasure listening and watching.... as child I remember watching Buddy in awe... not that I have been playing my own set of drum at 57 years old... I am even more astounded. Try replicating a lot of what he does even for short bursts.... he has a set of fast twitch muscles that most of us could only hope for...
@MrGramparules Nothing to do with it. I'd probably think he was an asshole if he was walking down the street. I hope you can agree with me, though, on the woman.
@henrytod How do you know? I only said that out of arbitrary mean-spiritedness (the YT way), though he does look kind of familiar, like some comedian from back in the day. As for the woman (unless that's his wife) my mean-spirited guess (totally unfounded in reality) is that a) she really doesn't know what she's listening to and b) she would do Buddy right there if she could. YouTube, snark 'til you drop.
It's amazing to see how drummers and drum kits have progressed over the years. It's gone from more technique and snare oriented to moving rudiments over as many things as possible. Buddy is obviously one of the best there ever was and ever will be, but imagine if you gave him a couple hours behind a kit like Neil Pert's or something? It would be the most ridiculously awesome drumming video of all time!
After watching this (and I've seen hundreds of B solos, seen him live twice) I don't ever have to see another solo again, by anyone. This performance was akin to watching Mozart compose a symphony spontaneously and play it simultaneously. OMG, indeed.
4:11 - Virgil Donati used to play trumpet in Buddy's band in the 1960's; night after night always had the best seat in the house to absorb Buddy's virtuosity, carefully studied him...and then eventually switched to drum set as his main instrument to become another drum beast.
Dylan Elise is good and fun to watch, but he's not particularly musical in his approach.
There's 10,000 guys who can play as well or better than Dylan, and some you'll never hear of.
Many reasons why Buddy was extraordinary; the ability to play any kind of drum, or improvise with no drums, or just sticks alone without hitting anything and make it musical. Or because he inspired so many and was the first to do so many things.
Yes there are better drummers, but they'll never be legends like Buddy.
@studioLH1 The defintion of "musicality" within a percussive instrument (not conceived as a melodic instrument in traditional concept of it) will always lead to inconsistencies and different interpretations. Some are inclined to almost immediately proclaim a drummer to be "musical" when hes laying down a groove, others will understand that a syncopated, jazz-like approach to the rudiments, rim shots/taps and space distribution can lead to an ever bigger "musicality".
@studioLH1 I for one see Elise as a very "musical" drummer, as he demonstrated to be great within both approaches (at least for once). For me he only lacks a more original expression. A style to call his own and a brilliant "natural facility" for improvisation to be switched on whenever its needed (just like Buddy). That would make him somehow comparable to B (imo) but I'm not holding my breath away.
@studioLH1 As you said it yourself, B. was the first drummer in history to do a wide number of things almost flawlessly. Things which became standards for every self-respected drummer. His importance to drumming can't be really measured. The only time I've witnessed Dylan play up to what I'd call the "Buddy Rich level of cohesive inventivity" was at that jazz festival in New Zeeland.
@studioLH1 I'm not totally convinced that he could play to that incredible standard again and again, thousands of different times in the way B. so easily did. This is yet to be seen, imo.
You may not think so, but there are. They just won't ever be a legend or influence like Buddy was.
The younger generations learned from Buddy and other greats to exceed what Buddy was capable of doing. That's just the nature of human progress in any endeavor.
Mozart was the greatest musical genius of his time (some may believe of all time), but rest assured, Mozart would be in awe of *some* things musicians did that came after him.
To reference greek religion, some of the gods and goddesses enjoy walking among mortals, just to play around with them. Buddy Rich is a great example.
Cad, I won't disagree with you except I'd like to see Buddy against this guy when HE was 16. Elise needs the chance to play arrangements in a bigband setting for sure
Buddy was incredible, but all you guys need to check out this kid from New Zealand, Dylan Elise. He's still a teenager and I think he has the potential to be called The World's Greatest Drummer.
@stretchcity Elise is an incredible drum-prodigy but hes essentially an earlier incarnation of Thomas Lang hybridized with Virgil Donati. Impressive, but unoriginal. He still has the potential to become the world's greatest drummer, someday though. Although I'll have to see him perform dozens of different times to different compositions to even mention his name alonside Buddy's. BR was a tough motherfucker... One single phenomenal performance won't cut it deep enough for me.
nah. when someone comes along and avoids the gimmicks and just plays with that 'pinpoint' accuracy of time, and technique, then and only then will I even think they might be in the league of Rich.
BUDDY WAS MY BEST FRIEND HE WAS AND STILL THE MASTER SEE THE DRUM SET SINATRA AND BUDDY GAVE ME ON YOUTUBE ...SINATRA AND PHIL AMBROS..........................I LOVE MY BROTHER BUDDY
Everything in these performances blows me away, especially the sheer physicality of his finale roll. It's not his fastest, but being able to go that speedy with that much power while nailing that snare-crash alternation is still unbelievable.
MD - You were good friends with the late Gene Krupa, weren't you?
BR - Yes, he was a very good friend of mine.
MD- Do you consider him an influence?
BR - I consider every drummer that ever played before me an influence, in every way. There were so many individual styles thirty or forty years ago. Every drummer that had a name, had a name because of his individual playing. He didn't sound like anybody else, So everybody that I ever listened to, in some form, influenced my taste.
From the moment Buddy Rich started playing every single drumming style stemmed from him. Blast beats, triplets, double triplets, rimshots - you name it Buddy came up with it.
It would be nice if this solo involved the melody of this West Side Story movement. Here we see and hear another astonishing display of Buddy's technical prowess. While that's a thrilling display of skill, it is not that engrossing in a musical sense. What say you all? Buddy would love the challenge!

@nonthere why does he looks like an asshole? because he's enjoying the solo?
MrGramparules 7 months ago
@MrGramparules Nothing to do with it. I'd probably think he was an asshole if he was walking down the street. I hope you can agree with me, though, on the woman.

@nonthere apparently he really was a total asshole in person.
henrytod 7 months ago

It would be the most ridiculously awesome drumming video of all time!
pettyws 9 months ago
@pettyws it's a shame Rich never got behind a big double bass kit and destroyed it.
It would have been awesome to see,but he always used the same size small kit to the end plus he wasn't a fan of 2 bass drums and big kits.
Rich did do 3 solos in 1949 using only 2 bass drums with no prior practise that were recorded.
He would have easily mastered double bass going by what he did then.

Now I get it...!!

rushbum 10 months ago
Dylan Elise is good and fun to watch, but he's not particularly musical in his approach.
There's 10,000 guys who can play as well or better than Dylan, and some you'll never hear of.
Many reasons why Buddy was extraordinary; the ability to play any kind of drum, or improvise with no drums, or just sticks alone without hitting anything and make it musical. Or because he inspired so many and was the first to do so many things.
Yes there are better drummers, but they'll never be legends like Buddy.
studioLH1 11 months ago
@studioLH1 The defintion of "musicality" within a percussive instrument (not conceived as a melodic instrument in traditional concept of it) will always lead to inconsistencies and different interpretations. Some are inclined to almost immediately proclaim a drummer to be "musical" when hes laying down a groove, others will understand that a syncopated, jazz-like approach to the rudiments, rim shots/taps and space distribution can lead to an ever bigger "musicality".
cadaverr 11 months ago
@studioLH1 I for one see Elise as a very "musical" drummer, as he demonstrated to be great within both approaches (at least for once). For me he only lacks a more original expression. A style to call his own and a brilliant "natural facility" for improvisation to be switched on whenever its needed (just like Buddy). That would make him somehow comparable to B (imo) but I'm not holding my breath away.
cadaverr 11 months ago
@studioLH1 As you said it yourself, B. was the first drummer in history to do a wide number of things almost flawlessly. Things which became standards for every self-respected drummer. His importance to drumming can't be really measured. The only time I've witnessed Dylan play up to what I'd call the "Buddy Rich level of cohesive inventivity" was at that jazz festival in New Zeeland.
cadaverr 11 months ago
@studioLH1 I'm not totally convinced that he could play to that incredible standard again and again, thousands of different times in the way B. so easily did. This is yet to be seen, imo.
cadaverr 11 months ago
@studioLH1 no ones better than buddy
ThePetercriss3 7 months ago
@ThePetercriss3 ... you better hope so because Buddy died.
You may not think so, but there are. They just won't ever be a legend or influence like Buddy was.
The younger generations learned from Buddy and other greats to exceed what Buddy was capable of doing. That's just the nature of human progress in any endeavor.
Mozart was the greatest musical genius of his time (some may believe of all time), but rest assured, Mozart would be in awe of *some* things musicians did that came after him.
studioLH1 7 months ago
Starting at 8:22 or so he's doing a snare roll with one hand while he's killing the cymbals. Absolutely incredible.

Cad, I won't disagree with you except I'd like to see Buddy against this guy when HE was 16. Elise needs the chance to play arrangements in a bigband setting for sure
stretchcity 11 months ago
Buddy was incredible, but all you guys need to check out this kid from New Zealand, Dylan Elise. He's still a teenager and I think he has the potential to be called The World's Greatest Drummer.
stretchcity 11 months ago
@stretchcity Elise is an incredible drum-prodigy but hes essentially an earlier incarnation of Thomas Lang hybridized with Virgil Donati. Impressive, but unoriginal. He still has the potential to become the world's greatest drummer, someday though. Although I'll have to see him perform dozens of different times to different compositions to even mention his name alonside Buddy's. BR was a tough motherfucker... One single phenomenal performance won't cut it deep enough for me.
cadaverr 11 months ago 8
@stretchcity Buddy Rich is the best drummer, and will always be the best drummer even tho he died. No one will and has ever beat him yet
spnj90 11 months ago
@stretchcity
nah. when someone comes along and avoids the gimmicks and just plays with that 'pinpoint' accuracy of time, and technique, then and only then will I even think they might be in the league of Rich.

JacklandInc 1 year ago
It would be nice if this solo involved the melody of this West Side Story movement. Here we see and hear another astonishing display of Buddy's technical prowess. While that's a thrilling display of skill, it is not that engrossing in a musical sense. What say you all? Buddy would love the challenge!
jwklbm326 1 year ago
@jwklbm326 His musicality was less than stellar. He could comp beautifully too, when he was pressed to.
