  • Gaby, cada vez te extrañamos más!!!!!

  • this chrissie hits weak she just pushes the ball sheeesh

  • chris was a shadow of herself in that video

  • everyone type won before youtube.com

  • @sam74 No, it was Sabatini with the boring game...

  • Sabatini's game was so boring....

  • GRANDE GABY!

  • Gaby is such a boy!!! She should come out instead of being an overrated she-man who frankly didn't have the game not to the mention the personality to be a champion!!!

  • @CariocaBoy82 LOL,

    DUH ON THE BOY PART.

  • @CariocaBoy82

what?? Sabatini had the game and the personality of a champion (how many matched of her did u actually watch??)!

what she lacked, unfortunately, was the stamina. often, in big matches, she would run out of steam when she was ahead (USO88, YEC90, Wimbly91).

  • @saar144

i think she didn't have the ultimate will.

  • In this match, the wind was a huge factor and advantage for Sabatini. Evert at her best was a better percentage player and covered the court better than Sabatini. This was Evert's last year on the tour and Sabatini was at her peak, but Evert pushed Sabatini hard for a good bit of this match.

  • at this tournament..Chris played the first five years and made the final all 5 years, loosing to mn, sg x 2 then gs..winning in 86...

  • fusite la mas grande entre las tenistas arentinas, nunca mas habra una como vos.............

  • its funny to see how flat Chris actually hit the ball. especially compared to the loopy Sabatini shots.... but such concentration and skill to win for all those years

  • 2 big women from America...nrline! kussen

  • my math teacher used to be a police officer in ft. lauderdale where chris lived and she used to watch her practice!!

  • I miss how the players all had different looks and playing styles. Everyone looks the same today! Same forehand, same 2 handed backhand, same pony tail, same visor! LOL Oh the good old days.

  • True!

  • Chris was in her mid 30's by this time and she was superb just to get to 3 sets with that pretty Gabby. 1989 was Evert's last year in the pro circuit.

  • thers no comparison with theses two just look at the record book Evert graf and navratilova are the 3 best of all time.

  • Listen...we can go back and forth on this issue. It is not Chris's fault when and where she played Sabatini. The main point is this and that is that they played 9 times and Chris won 6 of those encounters. Chris Evert's body of work on clay is of no comparison to Sabatini regardless of eras or contemporaries played against....we can only wish whimsically when pitting one against the other in a perfect world when both are at their best.

  • I saw Chris Evert play in the mid 80s. If you think she couldnt play then you are sadly mistaken. And with regard to Sabatini. She only beat Chrissie three times and none on clay. Evert's record is superior compared to just about anyone. Graf, Navratilva and Evert have the best record in Open tennis.

  • Gaby only beat Chris 3 times because by the time Gaby's game was becoming mature (that of an all court player), Chris retired. Besides, those loses to Chris were in the beginning of Gaby's career. And yet, most of them were tough 3 setters. Gaby's game bothers Chris. Even Chris said that she didn't have the slice to deal w/Gaby's high loopers. From 1990 - 1992, Gaby's game (aggressive all court game sans the serve) was on that she defeated Steffi a lot and Monica (#1) at the Italian.

  • This is all you need to compare the two.

    Evert = 18 slams

    Sabatini = 1 slam

  • @topjazz69 Half of them were 3 setters, the other half were straight sets !! Don't know what you are talking about

  • womens tennis today is like men wearing skirts....they only bash the ball as hard as they can and thats why theyre all hurt and out of the game after 5 years...tennis was meant to be a game of skill, not who can hit the hardest....thats why there was a movement to go back to wood racquets or at least different ones so the game wouldnt be so easy...martina navratilova said it herself , who here could argue with her?

  • i like 2

  • All good things come to an end! 1989 was a bad year for Chrissy, all the young guns like Sabatini, Seles, Graf, etc caught up with her and nailed her to the coffin. Even though she was way past her prime, she still gave them a run for their money.... and it was BIG money by then!

  • Cliff Drysdale is doing the play by play in this video. He's been doing tennis on ESPN since 1979.

  • Sure about that?. Why don't you be honest and admit that you would take Gaby in a heartbeat if you had the chance?.

  • chrissie was an excellent player....she moved very well, volleyed better than she was given credit for, and carried herself so well.....she hit bombs...i saw her in person. trust me, her shots were hard and right at the lines...

  • You can see here ow solidly she is hitting the ball, considering she really is from another 'era' you can really appreaciate what a great striker of the ball she was.

  • Definitely right. Way past her prime here at 33, vs a really strong quality player like Sabatini she takes her the distance. I know people will say Gaby won only 1 slam but she is one of the best to only win 1, she was lucky to be stuck vs both Graf and Seles in their primes, and early Navratilova too. You are right on Evert's hard hitting too, even here this last game her groundies put Gaby on her heels, but unfortunately she missed some uncharacteristic easier balls.

  • Oh your soooo smart.. I never knew why she was the first sportsman to have a ROSE NAMED after HER, a DOLL made in HER likeness and have a range of PERFUME In HER name...your right, IT Must be 'cause SHE looks like a man...Just think about that for a second.

  • Evert had a rose named after her in the 70s.

  • I beg to differn Evert would compete with todays players. She adapted to the player be it serve volleyer to other baseliner and she hardly made any errors and had a steely determination to win.I saw her beat a young Steffi at the Liptons with Steffi hitting as hard as i see any girl hit it today. Evert has the highest winning average of any player in history male or female for a reason, she was a champion, always was and always will be.

  • I agree. She would not have problems returning but serving. Her serve is what would hold her back because today's players go for their shots off the serve instead of pushing it back.

  • Evert kicked Gaby ass in this match Sabatini just got a little lucky that Evert had drunk 4 gallons of milk before the match and made her a little slow. sorry Gaby fans but Gaby was a lazy woman.

  • Gaby played too many matches due to her father. Had she rested and was better organized with her scheduling, she would played harder. Sometimes too much play leads to bad habits and lazy habits.

  • Sorry chief, I'm afraid you got it all wrong. In fact, Gaby kicked Evert's ass in this match. I love it when "experts" like you make remarks about Gaby being lazy. But you can never back it up with facts. Too bad you don't know what the hell your talking about.

  • $100,000 to the winner. lol hahahahaha it's 500,000 now. If only the everyday employee's salary would quintuple.

  • lol too funny!

  • I have this video too. I remember the next week Evert and Graf played in Boca Raton and the score was 4-6,6-2,6-3. I can't believe tennis was slow then. Graf, Sabatini, Evert of 1989 would have no chance beating the girls today.

  • The raquets were a lot less powerful then.

It's always hard to judge but I think, as Steffi proved in her last few years on the tour, when she was way past her best, that the stars of yesteryear couod still mix it up with nowadays 'faster' players.

  • I think it got even faster after Steffi left. Just look how Hingis got left in the dust after 1999. The Williams sisters became better after 2000. I just think if you put Navratilova, Graf, and Seles back on the tour today they wouldn't wins as much as they did when they were playing.

  • Yes the raquets def got more poweful i remember seeing Seles simply blow Hingis off the court at the US open in 2002 and i thought touch players like Hingis simply have no chance in todays game and in 2009 its even worse!

  • If they had the same raquets that the palyers have today ... I beg to differ

  • So Gaby wins the match with an ace. Does Cliff Drysdale(The Comentator)say any thing good about it, no. Whenever Gaby played it was always good things said about her aponent. That is so messed up!!

  • totally agree

  • Thx for posting. This was Chris's last year on the tour. She still moves well. But her patience is gone.

  • And the fire was gone from her eyes--she was clearly burned out. And her body had stiffened with age, more troublesome for her because she wasn't a natural athlete.

  • Looks like i found another Sabatini fan...Vamos Gabi

  • Does anyone have one of Chris winning?
