Looks great. I'm going to have to try that way of cooking them. I'm doing mine today with onion, garlic, red pepper flakes, lemon juice and some chorizo from my local butcher. I'll try your way, next!
That was so funny when you said that you had a problem with the amount of bacon grease in the pan. I thought you were going to pour some off BUT NO you added more in. I really laughed at that. But I have to admit those greens really looked good in the end. Great video, looking forward to more.
Too be Real Southern Hillbilly Sole Food it's gotta be POKE SALAD. That can kill you too, but from getting Snake bit while collecting the greens. For those wanting a firearm in the video, you could have used a gun to "chop or shread" the greens. How about a shotgun with Steel Shot (keep from getting lead poisoning ). Enjoy.
You could also (after you are done cooking) throw out the Mustard Greens and eat the Bacon.
looks great MBV. I cant wait to see the fried green tomatos. Madethis one for my ol'lady who is from Kentucky. North Kentucky. And she went nuts. Cant wait for more. Keep up the vids
I think it looks great, I have had a heart attack and now have 2 stents in but, I would love a plate of that. Nothing like old fashioned southern cooking.
Great Video! I have never had Mustard Greens, but I would love to try this dish one day. Great Job my friend. Well said, Where was the weapon of choice? I did a video and editted out the swearing. Go figure!
My great grandmother had a bacon grease jar on the stove at all times. Your right, it did not kill them but grandma went blind in one eye from the blockage of blood to the eye. My great grandmother cooked for the family in a railroad camp 20 miles in the woods of West Virginia when my grandmother was a child. I ate a lot of beans with ham hock and corn bread when I went to visit them in my childhood. I still make the beans and ham hock for my family when we are low on cash. :) So good!
5 stars mane!!! i know all about southern food i eat it everyday i live right downtown to where they have a festeval called hillbilly days once a year in pikeville kentucky!!!
Love them greens! I'm a southern boy myself and I live in the best state in the union, Polock Greens are the deadly greens, my grandma used to make it. Gardneing is so importnat of a skill to have people just do not realize it is. When/If the shit hits the fan so many people will die out from lack of some skills like shooting straight and being able to grow veggies. I can grow food to, currently just my "Tomatos" wich are doing super good. :)
MMMMMMMMMM....I can smell em cookin right now. I'm in Georgia and they serve all kinds of greens in restaurants down here. Don't know if they do up north or not. If not, them dammit they are missin out.
Come on MBV - you can't cook those up and end the vid without sampling the goods. They look awesome. I'm going to have to hijack the recipe and give it a shot. Thanks.
My grandma used to make mustard greens but she didn't add hardly anything to them. You just need a few drops of tobasco sauce on you plate... Either way, it looks great
@itachi1303 This is as Hillbilly as it gets my friend! My Grandmother cooked this dish and so did my other kin in South East Kentucky. Now this may be old school hillbilly but it is hillbilly trust me...
my grandma tought me to cook greens with bacon with the vinigar and sugar all together and let me tell ya the bacon makes all the difference without it they are kinda bland.
You're the next Food Network Star! Trust that's the organic Oscar Meyer bacon and oh yeah...bacon grease makes the best eggs. If you need expletives in the comments, let me know...Good luck!
Looks really good. At the spot you said you could add the sugar or vinegar, that is about where my grandmother would finish it off with honey, but other than that she fixed them the exact same way.. Of course, we grew up using a lot of honey in a lot of different kinds of dishes.
Question: do you think that you could do this dish with the "weeds" you were talking about when you did your garden update video (i forget the name of them)?
It's a bitch editing cooking vids huh? lol...Thanks for the entry richard....Looks real good...I've never had mustard greens, but i love collard greens.....Thumbs up bro and good luck :)
i think pork grease his healthier then cow, not by much lol. Test it out touch bacon grease and wash your hands in plain water, try it with beef fat as well. The pork grease comes off much easier and cleaner. But you should do more cooking video this is great. Looks very tasty, only thing missing is fried chicken and some corn bread. Awesome
You had me at bacon... And the ceramic dutch oven, those sell for as much as my first car.
Here's a really easy one if you haven't tried yet: Put two turkey legs in that pot, fill with water, boil one hour, add greens, simmer about 30 mins, enjoy. Sounds too easy but there's never leftovers.
It is 05:46 in the morning as I type this. I SOOO want that for breakfast!!! And lunch. And dinner. A definite thumbs-up for MBV"s "Hillbilly Greens".
LOL... The Mayans were also known to 'take out' the heart, your method is much tastier and far more subtle! Seriously, that dish looks awesome, thanks for sharing it; it's especially cool because you grew it! No firearms, are you feeling ok?
