I'm hoping I will get enough money this christmas and my birthday to buy the downloadable Guitar Mastery Program from you Mr. Marks. My cousin improved so much just by Speed Lives from MAB and I'm anxious to play and master every single thing I can learn about guitar with your program. I can't wait to see improvements in my playing as a new and fresh guitar player ready to learn on how to rock. When people ask me one day on how I got better, it's because of you. Thankyou for giving me hope!
Doug, you have truly convinced me to try your method. So this week I will be ordering your course. So many people have said Doug Marks' Metal method will help you achieve. I am gonna take the leap, hope it works. Very excited!
@wbjackson517 It will work as long as you spend time every day working on the program. Don't forget to sign up for our Forum because I will answer your questions there. Plus, it's a great online community of guitarists. You'll see!
Highly recommend this video series. If you are serious about learning then Metal Method is the way to go. Doug explains playing in a way that even someone with no clue at all can understand. Thank you Doug and keep on rockin !!
not honestly expecting a reply here but we'll see what happens. ive struggled over the past year with guitar playing and it seems like when i sit down to practice i just play the same old stuff until i get bored. im stuck in the aeolian mode and mode and the same licks over and over. cant seem to get outa my little box. any help would be appreciated from doug or from anyone...thanks
@MrPhenomenal7 Here's your problem: "i just play the same old stuff until i get bored." It's up to you to change that. When you learn something new, the guitar becomes new again. That's even true for people like me who have been playing forever. I can get stuck in a routine and get extremely bored. It's up to you to start working on new material. Go to metalmethod com and check out the newsletters at the bottom of the page. Check out the article: "Motivation for Guitarists"
hello doug. uh i have the 1993 version from my dad and i need help on root notes the second tape broke. do you think you can tell me how to find root notes on scales
@bbenavente25 - The root note is the first note of the scale. The sound of the scale is created by the intervals (frets) between notes following the root. That's a little difficult to explain here. I still sell DVDs! Sounds like you could use an updated version of the course.
@bbenavente25 Hi. Yeah, as doug says, any note can be a root note. The scale builds from that root in the same way the trunk and branches grow from the roots of a tree. Pick a note, any note - that's your ROOT. We then use the formula Tone, Tone, Semitone, Tone, Tone, Tone, Semitone to create the Major Scale and from that we can create all other scales, either by making changes to the major scale or by using new Tone/Semitone patterns. A Semitone is 1 fret and a tone is 2 frets by the way.
hi dmarks 10x man u really helped me i have some questions plz answer me umm i have KORG AX5G pedal and a small silvertone amp but its not giving me good sounds so what should i do? ,and i wanna know the difference between a guitar that has 21 frets and the one that has 24 frets 10x alot
ive been playing for a year and a half and ive been told im very "advanced" for only playing that period of time (not tryin to brag cuz i always tell ppl im not that good). i practice drills nearly 6-7 hours a day and ive heard nothing but good news about these dvds.
i was wondering if you really think this will help me progress faster and is it only for metal shredding because although i am interested in that, i still wanna learn other things like blues and jazz and everything else.
Hey there dmarks! I purchased a bunch of your VHS metal method videos back in the late 80's... although i never became a serious musician, your instruction was very helpful and I really enjoyed practicing using your tapes. Thanks for making my teenage years more bearable! Are these the same videos from back then or is the content updated?
Thanks. The content has been updated at least two times since your teenage years. The most recent revision was two years ago. Some of the content is the same but the technology is much different with DVD.
sweet man. thanks for your help, and by the way, the collar bone is pretty much healed. i have a question, what are your favorite string brand? just thought i'd ask.
I didn't know what a power chord was until Doug Marks' Metal Method. I was twelve years old when I bought the first lesson. Now, I am 37 years old and I'm watching Mr. Marks still getting musicians started and teaching people how to play. Incredible. Doug, you have made the world a better place.
I started playing guitar in 1987 and got some of your lessons that came with a little booklet and a tape. I remember "Metal Licks", "Metal Tricks" ( I got a lot out of that one by the way), "Metal Theory" and several more. I still have them. I just want to say thank you for getting me started off with the guitar on the right foot. Anyone that doesn't believe these lessons work, check out my stuff on youtube. I got alot of my knowledge from these lessons. Doug; Thank You!
Hello Doug Marks. Ive been playing guitar for about 20 years or so and cant play a lead to save my life.I can tinker around but but cant seem to make any sence,At least not to my ears. I am interested in your lessons. But do you think its a little to late to start now?
Absolutely not. Check out the Metal Method forum. There are many, many guitarists similar to you that have made progress with the course. It's not a matter of age it's a matter of time. If you have the time to practice you can master the guitar.
Hey Doug, I'm 14, I'm currently hurt with a broken collar bone, so I cant play for atleat a month (HUGE bummer) if i take lessons at a music store, and practice with your DVD, will my playing improve? I want to shred like a beast, so, wll your video: Speed Kills help me get really good.. or can you suggest one of your DVD's for me, so I can buy one?? I want to get reaaaally good, and I want to be famous, im VERY passionate, so please reply Doug, I need you'r help....
I am currently at stage 4. I am so happy with my progress and I cannot thank Mr. Marks enough for making this course. This is the quintessential guitar course, to give you an example... I was playing over a Black Sabbath song from the 70s and with what I learned so far I was able to not only figure out the key of the song but also improvise an original lead throughout the fretboard using the 5 minor pentatonic positions he taught and it really sounded good! He makes you UNDERSTAND how to play.
Lol, yeah. I've been whoring all over the net trying to develop my "skills". I was directed to you by one of your students. Hope you can teach me a lot. :D
when I first ordered you dvds, I was an average guitar player, now between your metal method DVDs and the Speed kills series, and my reasent aquisition of metal riffology my playing confidence has increased, even my band mates have commented on how I've improved.
doubters should get disk one through three and put it too the test, I did it worked!
im from the uk and been playing guitar for three years. whilst pondering over micheal angelos speed kills promo video, i followed the link to your site, and saw the basic course. i was first reluctant to order it, although i was intrigued, i thought shipping costs and stuff would mount up. previously, i had been learning the odd useless song off the licklibrary dvds, dunno if youve heard of them?but your course finally filled in the gaps and truly aided me with your excellent tuition, thanksdoug
This is the real deal! Doug's courses is for everyone who play or want to learn how play guitar right from the beginning. I have been playing for 25 years and never bothered to learn the foundation, the grounds of playing guitar. It was more cool to practice technique I thought. These courses was what I needed to move forward and become a more confidant guitarist. I had to learn from the beginning and man, Doug is the best teacher out there, incredible pedagogic. Thanx Doug!
Doug, I've been a google guitarist for a few years now and I gotta say, even stage 1 taught me a lot. It made me realize how lost I was just by copying music tabs. Had I not found your course, I think it would have taken me another 10 years to make the same improvements I made in just 3 months with your course. I'm only imagining where I'd be now if I started with your course 5 years ago.
I plan to buy the rest of your instructional material after I'm done with stage 6.
Doug is the real deal, His guitar lessons are the best I've ever seen. I own the entire course and highly reccomend it. My challange is to make the time to actually get thru all the material. Thanks again Doug.
I'll be the first to say the massive amounts of bullshit guitar lessons I've seen around and fortunately, this is NOT one of them.
I have to give my kudos to Mr. Marks for making a well thought-out and high-quality guitar instructional series that promises no miracles but gives the set of tools needed for someone looking to be competent and confident guitarist.
Doug kudos to you and your longevity. The fact that you are still teaching guitar and offering the material that you do; is a testament to where your heart is at.
My friends would ask me if I had a new guitar teacher..I told them "yeah,it's Metal Method"..lol..They did'nt believe me until I played along with one of the tapes! HA!

Doug and Metal Method are for REAL.Back in the 80's I got my first Metal Method lesson; learned some songs & then got the Theory lesson and went from there.IMMEDIATELY I took my playing to another level;my phrasing;technique;speed, and possibly more important..my CONFIDENCE went through the roof.
doug's been there since I've was a kid bank in the 80's, so you got experience and knowledge future guitar heros. he must be doing something right if he's still around. props and thanks doug!
There are two more points that I have to mention. First I have watched and worked with all of the dvd's and Doug has a very easy to understand teaching style even with the more complex subjects like modes. Secondly and Doug can correct me if i'm wrong but i believe the entire basic course is around $70. It would cost least 10 times that if not more if you tried to learn all that information privately and you can watch the dvd's over and over to boot.
To anybody reading this I can 100% attest for everything doug has been saying on this video. I have been playing for almost 25 years and have a bigger collection of learning material than i care to remember. I bought the complete basic course last year and was absolutely blown away by the organization and completeness of doug's course. The 6 part course has something for all levels from the absolute beginner to the advanced guitarist.
How is Michael in real life? He's a friend that I've known for nearly twenty years. What's it like to hang out with your good friends? It's pretty much like that.
