Thank you for posting this. When I was a small child, my mum used to tell the story of coming home from school one day and her own mum asked what hymn did you sing in school today, and my mum answered When Ice Was Laid Upon the Cross. We always got a laugh out of that story. And as it happens, this is one of my favourite hymns. Again, thank you so much for the hymns and videos you post.
None of this is written in the Koran. You have obviously not read it. I have. Read it; It says that Christians and Jews are "men of the book", The book being the Old Testemant, and that it is forbidden to lay a finger upon them. I can quote you chapter and verse on this if you wish. If you're determined to hate muslims, though, whats the point?
@myramike1996 Which part? The one where it tells Muslims to smite off the finger tips of non-believers? Or the one where Jews and Christians are reffered to as apes and pigs? Or where they say Jesus was NEVER crucified, the central theme of the Christian Faith. I am surprised that you who claim to be a christian thinks highly of the Koran after all it commands its followers to do against non-believers
@pello777 I know muslims believe that Jesus was a prophet, but nothing else... OK, so what do they make of Jesus' prophecy that after him would come many false Christs and False prophets, leading the myriads astray, even to the elect?
I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (February 14), I played this for Sunday School assembly. I did so because the lesson was Matthew 16: 13-27, and this was the recommended hymn. However, it was to the tune, HAMBURG, arranged by Lowell Mason.
Such a beautiful hymn well sung and nice video clips. Britain, you have to FIGHT and defend you heritage, these muslims are gonna finish you off, dont let a millenium of histroy go down the drain coz of liberals, GOD SAVE THE QUEEN and GOD BLESS THE UK.
@pello777 What a bigoted attitude you have! I'm a Christian and I love this hymn but Islam too has a rich cultural heritage. Why can't we all just learn to live together? Surely that's what God wants, and don't forget that his son who inspired the hymn could hardly be described as a white Brit; as for FIGHTing to defend our Christian heritage, who was it that said "Blessed are the peacemakers" ?
The true Roman Catholic cannot sing the words of this hymn. For Roman Catholic theology gives you something to boast of, for it allows for you to gain standing with God by your works.
A proud Anglican and a lover of all things ecclesiastical, no matter what church in Christianity. I love to listen to these hyms and just think that somewhere in Britain people have been singing this and other hymns for hundreds of years. Our history is important, god let us not allow it to slip through our fingers.
Have you even thought this out? I cannot see how any mature person could write in the way you do. Life is too important to waist it on insulting rants. You are missing out on real life.
God bless you. (We all need his help no matter what we may choose to believe.)
Thanks for the info. I'm used to singing only 3 verses. I learnt this as an Anglican but now sing it in the Catholic Church. The trouble is that every time they bring out a new version of 'The Catholic Book of Worship' (hymnal) they change the words and I don't always see why. (Pet peeve.) I'll sing at the top of my voice but suddenly with different words! (More pet-peeving. Sorry.)
The cross is our victory, the reason for our joy, the epitome of humility, or what Fulton Sheen calls 'kenosis' . At times we get so proud that we forget that humility pays. MAY WE COUNT OR RICHEST GAIN AS LOSS: AMEN
SOON, we will not have freedoms to sing of the the DIVINE BLOOD sacrifice of the ONE TRUE GOD, Jesus Christ HEBREW(YHWH-God)Yah-shuah:God Deliverer=Jesus Christ or GREEK: Iesous Christos.. who is GOD, who was the PERECT LAMB who GAVE us LIFE Everlasting in heaven to those who repent, trust & follow HIM ,Sin divides us. Jesus CAME, purpose? to save us from Eternal HELL, which we deserve, HE, lifted the barrier of sin,on the CROSS. The most beautiful LOVE HIS-STORY that ever was & is.
The words are so powerful in this hymn, one of the best in terms of lyrics without a doubt.

Personally I think the goal of the Catholic church could be none other than to soften and dilute the meaning of the original text.
