For all those 'no need for models' you couldn't be more wrong. Gehry is good enough as an artist to have great engineers to find the solutions for his ideeas. It's all about team work, you engineers should take art classes, as the architects take lots of tehnical ones... Btw, Calatrava makes sculptural models, is he a dumb engineer?
Architecture designing is supposed to be basic stuff to Architects. Design ideas should pop in spontaneously in any given time to Architects. Architects should proceed to learn more about the Science aspect of Architecture and not involve too much in this gay scale model stuff.
Scale models are used to present projects to laymen and non-technical people. it is not supposed to be used to conceptualize designs. Only dumb and no Engineering sense Architects like Gehry need scale models to conceptualize designs.
What is this? An origami studio? Architecture education is America looks gay! No wonder you guys don't get the respect of construction people. Real Architects don't need scale models to conceptualize designs. 3D software is enough for good Architects while great Architects make do with simple 2D sketches.
@101ers77 funny cus uh... almost every architect(ure firm) presents with models. You're not an architect if you can't do models by hand. You like 3D software? yeah, we can do that but you might as well be a graphic artist cus you apparently can't handle the knife.
@101ers77 why architect need to learn to make models.? because it easiest way to explain scale, depth, dimension, and all 3D things to the client. architect is easy to image 3D form from 2D draw. but not all people can.. you say Gehry dumb.?? you dumb bro!! very dumb!! Gehry is a revolusioner.
@666abee Gehry is a twonk, just look at how much steelwork goes into supporting the forms of his buildings - it's not architecture, it's flamboyant and insensible
Theta angle cutter is designed to cut up to 1/5 inch thick corrugate paper, foam board, rubber, or styrofoam in 30, 45, 60, 75, or 90 degree safely. I go to a community college which DON'T have an architecture program, except CAD and I need a portfolio...I want to attend to MassArt and they require 15-20 pieces AND must be completed from direct observation of live situations or three-dimensional objects...the only thing I can do is draw. So I'll be attempting to start drawing from figures and/or model buildings from scraps..is that a good start?
everyone knows architects are all boy lovers and bum touchers, construction managers is the best!! best degree, best job for a man, manly career, gets to boss folks around, and shout at people, and tell teh architects to piss off if they make stupid designs
@freederikk to some extent i will agree to that!! when i was visiting the university of salford for an open day yeaaars ago, the structural engineers had to make a scaled down model of the trafford centre for wind tunnel testing. needles to say, it was quite an accurate model. i was very impressed.

it's just the model of a real project but in a little scale!! and I don't know why they are calling him "crazy" it's a banal thing in architecture schools... when you make your project (plans, façades...) you must make a model like this!!!
Use an architectural scale? and thin chipboard is pretty good, this is what this guy is using, it looks like. Also, if you can find matting board for photography students, its pretty decent material. and always some good ol corrugated cardboard :)

it pays some. really its like any other proffession, if ur good at it, you can make a fair amount, if that's what your after. but you also have to work a lot at it, but its rewarding i think. i've heard that architecture's hard work and the pay is low. at least the starting pay for an architect who's entering the field is low.
