I can't watch the whole video but I've heard this argument before. The problem is-- no one knows if the Druids built stonehenge or not. There's some evidence that points to the Druids being of Pre-Indo European origin (and thus pre-celtic) which would make it possible. In fact the word Druid may be of Pre-IE origin.
And if the Paleolithic Continuity Theory is true, then it is possible for the celtic druids to have made Stonehenge.
Apart from Caesar the earliest passing reference to the druids is from a work by Aristotle writing 330 BC though this work disappeared long ago and was only cited 550 years after it was written.
Right, that's what I said, the 3rd century BCE.... Not sure actually. Would 330 be third century BCE? Do the centuries count backwards too? Is 30 BCE in the first century BCE?
CE means 'Current Era' which started a little over 2000 years ago and is the same equivalent as the 'Anno Domini' of the old system. So we are living in 2008 CE or AD. Anything before our current era is obviously BCE (before current era) or BC (before Christ). So yes, 30 BCE would be in the first century BCE or BC. Hope that helps.
No problem. Those interested in this subject might find it useful to look up 'Stonehenge - The Druid Theory' here on Youtube which gives the opinion of one Stonehenge's chief archaeologists.
@sylvanhart -but you may want to note-***the druids burned people alive in vine baskets by summonsing pixie fire from his*(BAAEEL) snort!! the fire of hot and flaming vortex.consumed them and screams were heard around the valley...hop on your horse and go there if you will...to re-cant the mystery of the stones and why they started a traditional rite called "Halloween? Trick or treat?? ut is assumed that by now there is an illuminary one to start the majik agin...whom ?dont dittle with me stones
Just because some one said that the druids started at a certian time in history doesnt mean that is when they started, how do you know 100% that when people say they were started is exactly when they were started, Just because you read on book about the druids not being connected to stonehenge means you know it all right.....
No it's becuase the earliest evidence we have of Druids comes from the 3rd century CE. The first monument at stonehenge was built around 3100 BCE and stonehenge as we know it now was finished around1930 BCE. That's a gap of 5000 years between stonehenge being completed and Druidism beginning.
Our understanding of what's true comes from evidence. Evidence is the only way we can truly figure out what is true. My last comment was a little sarcastic because, and let me make this REALLY clear for you, evidence=truth.
The only thing that makes evidence truth is if you can prove its truth, People use evidence to prove somethings truth, but evidence doesnt always mean that what you think is true.
Ok, fair point. It does depend on how the evidence is interpreted but I'd say that in this case it's very clear, stonehenge was not built for the druids. It predates them significantly.
Just to correct a couple of points here - the earliest written accounts which have survived about the druids is from the 1st century BC by Julius Caesar in his Gallic Wars. And works within Stonehenge, and by that I mean the bank and ditch enclosure only (the henge), came to a stop around 1600BC. There are certainly no surviving accounts which give a starting date for 'druidism beginning'.
Stonehenge was an ongoing work 'built' over a period of 1500 years and in five distinct stages so it was most probably adapted and changed to the beliefs of the culture working on it at the time.
The druidic religion could be far older than the time frame suggested for the incoming celtic culture it is associated with. Caeser tells us druidism originated in Britain and that they had much knowledge of the 'stars and their motions' which was probably passed down from megalithic culture.
It is known that the Druids built similar stone temples at Angelsey, senturies before the Romans were in England. So most likely they also built Stonehenge
It is known that Stonehenge is much, much older than any druid culture. If druids did build their own stone circles then they were just copying what was already there.
It should be noted that the Stonehenge Druid connection is due to the 18th century antiquarian William Stukeley who suggested that if the monument was pre-roman then it must be druidic.
Modern druids are not concerned about proving a connection between the historical druids and Stonehenge. The reverance is to do with the fact that the landscape was held sacred by our ancestors whomever they were.
Druids are just really good at realizing that for whatever reason that the Henge is special. Whether it be sacred or scientific... It is special so hey, let's go hang out there! Like hippies near a hemp farm. Or vegetarians near a health food store.
I nearly split a gut the first time I saw Spinal Tap, when that miniature Stonehenge descended from the rafters amid the capering dwarfs. Perfectly encapsulated the historical ignorance of so many in our culture.
Druidism was a name give to school of spiritual people who had dwelt in thse Islands for at least a thousand years prior to the Romans coming here.
They may not have used Stonehenge that can be proven but the whole idea of the Stones of which there are many through out Britain do carry markings which are of their belief structure. So its quite likely they did use the Henge.
oh gods. that was actually fun to watch. but if anyone really wants to know... stone henge was nothing more than a rest area along a greatly traveled road. they also served ale and roasted meats there for a small price.

Thats exactly what I am saying, Its just evidence. Its not 100% truth.

Indeed. After all we only have evidence that HIV cuases AIDs. Who cares if it's true or not?

So you dont care if what you are saying is true, just because there is evidence makes it ok to tell every one this is what is happening....

"The point is that Stonehenge was never used by druids..."
is contradicted by what it says one screen before:
"...no one knows what its purpose was. Theories range from religious structure to astronomical calendar. We will probably never know"
and
"...nor is there any evidence that it was used by druids...ever"
There may be no evidence that they did, but i don't see any evidence that they didn't either.

My point was that it wasn't built by or for druids. Sorry, could've been a bit clearer.

Pagans druids I dont think its so much of them claiming Stonehenge more like holding on to what we have left in this country.
I would rather see the Druids in there than the Chavs P*ssing up the stones as they did last year.
Heritageparty 4 years ago
Yeah, if the Chavs start claiming ancient heritage sites for their ceremonies then this country will be fucked, innit geez.

Druids were NOT a race of people but a priesthood class of Celtic society.
