Question. Does anyone actually know which two fish make up the blood parrot? I can see traits and character from the Red Devil cichlid. Also, why are the males infertile but not the females? o_O Educated insight preferred. Thanks in advance.
@leolux10 more than 90% of the blood parrots you find is pet and fish stores are hybrid combinations of the Red Devil cichlid and the Gold Severum. Thats what mine is. thats why parrots can go either way with aggression. Some can take after the Red Devil genes and try to terrorize tankmates, while other blood parrots can take after the severum and be very peaceful and just go about their own buisness.
I have a pair of parrots (blue male/publish orange female). They show the behavior of a mated pair. It's just too bad they may never produce. Let's hope for a miracle! I just hope my blue male lives long. :/
thats fucking crazy i never seen a parrot and a firemouth mate before so it is possible my parrot and daimon teaxs are in a casstle fighting everybody ether they have eggs or they are going to mate they act wierd its kool if they have eggs thoe
Nice, I did not know that a firemouth can be compatible wiht blood parrot. Please update us with videos of the fry and how they turned out if viable. I am curious to find out. If it turns out viable batch, what cool colors that would be.
I have a tank with two Firemouths and I introduced a smaller Blood Parrot and the Firemouths attack it constantly and the Parrot just sits there taking it...what can I do? I was told they were compatible?
your FM is beautiful!!! You should get her a mate thats not retarded (sorry I'm not a fan of tardfish, I mean blood parrots). Oh man just saw the flare up while typing, such amazing color.
oohhh a blue lobster. How much bigger will it get? And yes like you read, male parrots are sterile, but I read somewhere that certain male parrots become fertile after receiving some type of injection to reverse it. Doesn't sound real to me, but it's the internet.
yea, toobad the males are sterile. I am attempting to breed a male severum with a female parrot, should be some nice babies. that is a female i can see her egg tube, since she will breed with other cichlids you should try breeding her with a convict, or a red devil
@Rob10321 yes thankyou i'm aware of this like ive said in earlier comments (see below) , i know that male parrots are infertile. females however have good eggs that can be fertilized by other male cichlid species so you are correct. i've seen a male Texas cichlid sucuessfuly fertilize female parrot eggs before, but you're right its very rare
actually I'm 100% positive that the firemouth is the female. I've watched the her lay eggs very closely. This wasn't the only spawn these two had. they have spawned 3 times and no babies have been produced because the male parrot, being a hybrid, is infertile. Also, although she's colorful, the firemouth's fins are much shorter than those of a male and her overall size is smaller than an adult male. I have added at juvenile male to the tank and the differences are already becoming visible
ahaha lol, hopefully i can get an parrot fish when i upgrade :) there awesome little guys, there at petsmart but sell for $22 which is a rip off, hopefully i can find an better deal, i think i seeen some baby ones but they were different colour (dye)
yeah parrots are pretty cool if you get a nice looking one, and yeah i know they're pretty expensive at PetsMart. i got mine for $15 at petco when he was about 2 inches. And yeah Don't buy any parrrots or any fish that have been dye injected. It shortens their life span and i just don't agree with it
@BingX14 - ahhh really? because i seen some blue ones that are an inch big, for only $7 but i'll go to petsmart, there selling the big red ones, for $8 i think :D
yeah thats good just make sure you get a natural colored one (orange or red) cuz ive seen what they do to inject colored dye into fish and its rediculous lol
@BingX14 - yeaaah and they dont look appealing at all, i like red and orangey, it stands out compared to injected ones, hey would you know what type of cichlids that could possibley breed with them?
yeah exactly, like having a purple parrot or something crazy like that just looks weird lol. Well, male parrot cichlids are infertile because they are hybrids. Thats the reason i haven't gotten any babies from my firemouth and parrot. HOWEVER, if you have a female parrot, her eggs CAN be fertilized by another cichlid species.. I've heard of female parrots breeding with male Texas cichlids...that's probably the most common.
a day or 2 before the female gets ready to lay eggs does the papilla show.

My Green Terror and Blood Parrot attempt to spawn all the time. She always ends up abandoning the eggs cause they don't hatch.

actualy BingX14, male parrots cant fertalize eggs even parrot eggs, however other types of male cichlids could ferlaize them but this is rather rare.
