I'm pretty sure they intentionally make stuff to break after awhile nowdays. It's the same deal with cars. They could make stuff that practically lasts forever, but I guess there's not enough money in that. Nintendo seems to be good about making reliable products, though.

We used to have a CD protective sleeve back in the ol' days. It was essentially a jewel case with a springloaded protective door where the l.a.s.e.r. would read the media. Upon inserting the case (disk inside) a mechanism would open the bay door and begin reading. But ultimately capitalism/free-market/fractal reserve banking is to blame here as with all attempts by the next bigger guy to get all your monies.

It's all about how you take care of them. In my experience with NES cartridges I have only had two that didn't work. The boards were clean and and had no damage but they are definitely dead. Lightning damage possibly? Take care of discs and they should last a long time too. I have compact discs I bought over 20 years ago and they are all fine. Lesson: Take care of your games and they will take care of you!

I wonder if they made a modern cartridge system if the games could be equally as advanced as their cd counterparts. I'd be all over a new cartridge system, my ps2, wii, and to some degree gamecube don't run quite as well as they once did. Wheras my nes, snes, and n64 have been used more for a longer span of time and still work like a million bucks.
