This is some spectacular footage of that supercell thunderstorm and associated tornado! The lashing rains at the end were so fearsome, and those lightning CGs you captured certainly made the feeling so dramatic!
Just one question, but do you happen to know the estimated strength of the tornado you captured in this video?
Excellent work, my friend, and very nice video description!
@Rain1290 Thanks so much, Travis! This particular supercell was incredible. I have three different videos posted from this one cyclic event, it just kept producing tornado after tornado. The highest rating I saw from any of the tornadoes in this particular storm was EF2. That said, none of them really hit anything substantial, except the hog farm in that famous aerial footage from Hennessey, OK. Given the doppler velocities recorded I suspect this storm produced one or two tornadoes near EF3.
Thanks for this beautiful video. I live in Arizona and I miss *real* weather! If we have rain it's the main news story of the day. The weather is great here but it can be monotinous.
@zoniekat Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the clip... I'm sure you make up for the lack of significant weather with the beautiful scenery though!
And then they find out that it does not resemble what they expected at all. Additionally, one of the first things that some people assume is that because it is an old book which comes from the desert, it should talk about the desert. Well the Quran does talk about the desert - some of its imagery describes the desert; but it also talks about the sea - what its like to be in a storm on the sea.
One thing which surprises non-Muslims who are examining the book very closely is that the Quran does not appear to them to be what they expected. What they assume is that they have an old book which came fourteen centuries ago from the Arabian desert; and they expect that the book should look something like that - an old book from the desert.
Hi Chris... you are absolutely correct, using a highway overpass as shelter from a tornado is a seriously bad idea... however, that's not what we were doing in this video. At the end of this clip, the meso and associated tornadic circulation with this cell were already well east of I-35 (and weakening)... we were simply avoiding damage to the car from the approaching hail core.
Man i remember this. That tornado was so huge! I remember that i was southeast of the storm, then it started turning our way. Everyone was scarmbling out of its way. I'm it didnt hold up to Orlando, because it would have been bad.
Looks like you got on at least two of the same storms I did. I saw that wedge tornado, but it ended up getting rainwrapped from my vantage point. I never got it on video. I 'm glad you got it, because it confirms what I saw. I managed to get 2 near Orlando. I also got that Lane county tornado on the 23rd in Kansas. I believe you guys were on the same road I was during that tornado. Your vid is better than mine, I didn't have a tripod and the wind that day was rediculous. Mine is to shaky 4 Utube
Yeah, this cell was a tornado factory... it kept spitting out tornadoes of every shape and size over it's four hour lifespan. Prior to moving back to I35 (where the scenes in this clip were shot), we were farther west in Garfield county (south of Douglas) and got some incredible footage of a rapidly rotating wall cloud and a large tornado just to our south.
Thanks Chris! This was such an incredible storm. We were really lucky to have been in the right position to get to it. Many other chasers opted for the northern target area up in Nebraska.
Very impressive footage Michael!!! It is amazing to get a wedge tornado, and with intense Lightning strikes around it. Could it get any better than this?
Thanks Nathan! May 24th was definitely an incredible day. It's just amazing that this one cell produced as many tornadic events as it did. And I was really lucky, having the frequent lightning in frame really added to the footage.
60-65mph,eh? Maybe I do exaggerate a wee bit in my videos - sometimes...Anyhoo I'm happy as a clam that you're starting to put your footage up. Your stuff is obviously much better than mine. Great shots of the wedge that I didn't know was a wedge till a week later. Can't wait to see your stuff from earlier that day - when we "almost died" as I say it.
Thanks Max!!! Yep those winds in the core were really just 60-65mph. Don't worry though, we'll try for 165mph in an eyewall soon. Anyway, I'm glad you like the footage, it took forever to edit and render it all. Obviously watching it here on YouTube doesn't do the video justice... seeing it in full HD quality looks totally different.
Wow today is May 24, 2011 and there is a Tornado warning at the Noble County. That`s so weird same day 3 years ago this happened
