  • Do you have any advice on how to effectively filter the worm castings from your worm bin into the self-watering containers? Also, how do you go about harvesting the worm tea from the drainage bin below? I'm brand new at all of this and want to try this out sometime.

    Keep the vids coming! :)

  • To harvest the worm tea I take the bin with the worms in it out and just dump it into a bucket. I then filter it (with coffee filter if using in sprayer). Hope this helps. ~Jeri

  • @BalconyGrow Thanks a ton Jeri! I just went and put together my first self-watering bin with your advice, filling it with some nice miracle grow soil mix and using three of those dispenser water cases. I hope I drilled the hole in the right place on the plastic bin itself so there's enough water to reach the roots!

By the way, do you use the worm castings as well in your balcony garden? If so, do you have to mix it in with the current soil your plant has? Thanks in advance!

  • Thanks for this video. Yes, you inspired me to start worm composting. I have the bin set up but no worms yet. They should get here early next week. What a great way to use up stuff that otherwise would just go in the garbage. I'll document my progress in some videos as time goes by. Thanks again.

    Best Regards,

    Gary

  • cool

  • hang a dryer sheet next to the bin to keep fruit flies away it worked for me when I started a bin, also pin to your shirt when in the yard to keep nats and mosqitoes away

  • I really like your compost bin!

  • Plus I think the light coming from the crack make the worms go in the bottom since they dislike light. I tried it but it was always full of fungussy looking stuff on top.But yours look allright.

  • I have so many fruit flies in my worms and they won't go away! any suggestions?

  • Deep layer (three inches or more) of shredded paper on top of everything. It's probably a better method of preventing a fruit fly problem than curing one, but if you can keep the adult flies from accessing the food stock for a few weeks, they should subside. It might cause the flies to see other food sources, though, so if your bin is indoor, you'll need to be diligent in keeping your kitchen area clean and free of any kind of fruit or vegetable trimmings or juices.

  • @etisful best way to get fruit flies.

    1. Get a small bowl and fill with vinegar.

    2. Put a few drops of dish detergent in the vinegar.

    3. cover with plastic wrap then poke a few small holes in top.

Fruit flies will come and drown in the mixture as there is no surface tension in the mixture.

    Cheers

  • I've run out of room to try this as my balconey is so tiny but iv'e grown some japnese salad and some things for a stir fry. :) love y
