@dizzythegreat: Not so cheap by the way, you should check the funeral price, or how much it can cost you to go to paradise after death. Sorry... I'm just amused at people who think about spirituality as some kind of subcategory in their leisure and are chocked by this movie.
These monks don't live here forever. Total bullshit. Monks go this monastery for about a year, graduate, get drunk, then inherit their father's temple and make good dough.
@kupa200707 The point, in this odd way, is mindfulness, diligence and the ability to put aside one's ego. This is possible without the rigors of a temple, of course, but it may help to have a structure to the practice.
our free will is what we follow that is why we are still watching these videos on ZEN and not being there in the Monastery following. it is their free will to follow the strict discipline. many ways to reach the goal, and this is one.
I don't know. I'm not one to speak about zen. I'm barely 17.
But something seems vaguely wrong about this level of discipline. Feel free to correct me and offer your opinion, but it seems more like regurgitating learned behaviors and routines than a true learning experience.
I say again, feel free to correct me. I have much to learn.
@MusicAmidstTheTrees You're entitled to your opinion on the rigors of Zen monastery practice, of course, but I think the point is to have less ego and more mindfulness.
In my (very limited) experience, work practice can be some of the most rewarding parts of practice at a temple. Putting yourself aside and focusing only on your work, completing it silently and compassionately. The point of the rigorous monastic life is to apply this mindful diligence to everything in life.
This is just Zen boot camp after which these guys inherit their father's temple and can make a lot of dough (parking lot fees for example which can rake in 35 grand a year). In China the boot camp period is far less; but one has to become a full fledged monk or nun taking all the monastic vows. Not so in Japan, priests can drink (they often do) and screw, and eat meat.
The most of comments here are comments without comprehension. Without practice. Some people say that is the same "4(/$·%()" , that comes from Yoga??? , that Ninja and Samurai practice Zen, and people of different reilgions arrives with their own beliefs , every person has their path , etc.
1. The Zen is not a weapon, not a sword to damage to anybody to anything. To avoid damage. But can damage the EGO. That´s the main reason of this "no-weapon".
JSDF (Japanese self defence forces) use bushido in the military like the Samurai warriors but not everyone use bushido in the military only a few peoples.
It's simple guys...be in the moment, see the joyful nature of all things, independent of harsh condition. When you sit in zazen, just for curiosity, and somehow you see this, you are never the same.
So people practice Zen Buddhism...So what! Why do some people of different religions come here to bash what another person believes? Get a life, each person has their selected path to the Truth.
the same old 'kibishi' bullshit. after a few short years, these guys all go off and take over their father's (tax free) temples. all this comes from YOGA. don't forget that. most zen students I know are half mad. more neurotic than most ...
4:47 "As it is said in the Bible: Heaven is not for the weak"
This is found nowhere in the Bible. On the contrary the Bible is full of teachings emphasizing God's great care for the poor, the sick, the forgotten, the oppressed and all those who are weak. Actually Jesus says to St Paul that in his (Paul's) weakness is His grace made perfect.
I wonder why after the body death, there is a fuzz to reincarnate back on this hell earth? is there an ego attachment that westerns are so bound to? all those monks will give up the chance to come back? or will they have the really free will to choose?
What!? All this time and discipline, but hey I want spirituality fast and cheap like my burgers...

@curtisroad22 Fast and cheap spirituality? Sounds like the Japanese sect of Pure Land Buddhism.

And please dont think about the time the next time you have the beautiful chance to be in a Zen temple.

For the person who made this video. Zen is not at all what you have seen in that temple.
First you need to have your eyes ready to understand.
Please dont try to show your reality to the rest of the world as if it were our reality.
that in fact is another religion or at least a way to change other people.

Everybody has their own path , but the main difficult for religions are that..."The RELIGION"
The same realigion as are right now, today , in this actual society...The religions are the main obstacle.
The Zen , helps to see more, to see beyound the obstacle.
The beliefs are damage because are lile mind program, and not let you think and see the reality.
