(Sorry for my bad english...) There is a mistake about the recording. It is not the 1967 Dallas Medea. It is in Mantova, 1971, with Angelo Lo Forese as Giasone, Loris Ganbelli, Elena Baggiore, Gloria Foglizzio, and conductor is Nicola Rescigno. I have the complete recording on CD.
I don´t know the Dallas 1967 version of Medea with the great Magda Olivero. This must be the performance of november 4, 1967 with Bruno Prevedi and Graziella Scutti and Nicola Rescigno as the conductor. I have seen her in Amsterdam, june 20, 1970 in this wonderful opera, with Mirto Picchi. The conductor was Fulvio Vernizzi. In my opinion she is a more expressive Medea than Callas.
Olivero is breathtaking as Medea! She reminds me of Callas's fiery interpretation! She marvellously portrays all Medea's despair, thirst for revenge and everything! By the way, was she by any chance, partnered by Bruno Prevedi here? I think they sang together in this opera in Dallas, late 1960s, but I wasn't sure which year. And Schaunard, could you upload more of this, please?
Callas envied Ponselle's perfect legato and portamento, and revered her musical mastery of bel canto repertoire, but in so many words Callas knew how to make a silk purse of a sow's ear, with her endless inventions and dramatic devices, what worked only for her, in essence. Olivero could tear into a score like Meyerbeer with the dramatic savvy of Paganini, then become something entirely different, and without damaging the voice. The only difference between Callas and her is Olivero's happiness.
She is lacking just middle voice! But I do like her attacks, her declamation and inflexion...a bit "Callas" like, but after all, Callas imitated Ponselle, so why not ?
