wow the amount of hate here is insane...if someone was inspired by my culture enough to learn our traditional type dance Id be flattered. Its not about your color of skin or really the letters on your chest. Instead of sitting here and saying we're all white or we're all black how about we stop acting like idiots and realize they're all college women striving for an education. This is better than I thought it would be. However, it's not the greatest thing since sliced bread like people are making it out to be. If a bunch of AKAs did the same routine I seriously doubt they would've won. It boils down to the fact the predominantly Black crowd lost their mind when they saw group of White girls stepping. It was good but 1st place? Not a chance!!!
Stepping is a tradition with African American, most Latino and Multi cultural and even Asian Greek Orgs. But stepping is not limited to people in Greek orgs. Churches, High School step teams, and step teams not affiliated with Greek's orgs practice the tradition of stepping.
I have to say this. Yes they did a good job but they were not the winners. I came from a chapter that use to win stepshow competitions all over the Southeast. We as African Americans(AA) have to stop being impressed when caucasians do or perform something that is "black". Anyone that is a true stepper know that there were alot of "popcorn" mistakes. They did a good job but if they were a black step team they would have never won the stepoff.

A step show is part of a tradition of crossing over and joining a Greek Letter organization on campus not a profession. It all boils down to the effort and creativity of a particular line or chapter in preparing for a particular event and as part of "their" crossing over. It is something that people remember forever. So on any given campus any of the sororities or fraternities can come out on top. And in this particular event ZTA did. And that is not necessarily a bad thing.

I am very disappointed in AKA, Love them to death, but they didn't bring anything fresh to the game. Next time bring more than just your looks to the competition, the suit was not a good idea, and AKA was not in unity in their steps. Zeta handled their business.

I am a white member of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc., and these ladies deserved to win. They were on point and nobody compared to them. They just came out and stepped like men. If they were all black, I still think they should've won. GREAT and PRECISE! Excellent job ladies! Hope to see you guys in the future!

@themack1970 yeah but there is a such thing as a black stepper and not a white one who goes and video tapes steppers to make there marks. stepping was something created amongst the fraternities to stand out, something we could have our own and anytime there is a strong brother there is a strong sister but there is always the caucasian girl lurking around trying to figure out how she can take one more thing from us. stepping wasn't created by your "white" greeks but by ours.
Zeta was considerably better than AKA. They deserved first place and I'm disappointed that my community (blacks) didn't lose more graciously. Zeta was fantastic and tremendously better than the other sororities. There's no way the scoring could have been close. Shame on Coca Cola for bowing to politics and awarding a tie to AKA. Next time, AKA, bring your A game.

You have to know how Emininem's fellow rap artist felt when he won the very first Oscar for a rap song. I think our community would like to keep some things amongst ourselves and stepping is one of them. I live in San Jose ad believe me I know how much my culture has affected every culture even to the point where the N word is used by every one.
@Maidong07 I read that this competition was not the first time this sorority competed in step competitions. That this particular competition is the first time they placed first. After seeing both performances, I believe the judges were fair in awarding first place to zeta tau alpha. I hope this loss inspires every sorority, black, white and otherwise, to step up to the challenge of being better next time.
@Maidong07 What point am I missing? I think I understand that it hurts to be bested by non-blacks at something that was uniquely a part of black culture, but that's ok. Black people have had tremendous influence on American culture, proportionately greater that our numbers and our position within U.S. society. That a white sorority has adopted some of our culture is just one more example of black influence on American culture. That's a good thing.
@similik101 The Zetas won. There was no real competition between them and AKAs. If I were an AKA, I'd be ashamed to accept that pity prize from a sponsor who was afraid of bad publicity in the black community. I like to earn my awards. The AKAs did not put on a first prize performance. I hope they and other sororities up their game next time. I hope the Zetas know there are some in the black community who acknowledge that the Zetas won fairly.

My daughter is 9 years old and the only African American in her school she is in the fourth grade and gets discriminated against on a weekly basis all because she is an African American. African American's do not perpetuate racism especially amongst our children and I remind her everyday that it is because of Martin Luther King that everyone is created equal he died for every non-white person to be treated as such it never goes away.

"This tradition is not yours" - you could just as well say that any tradition does not belong to another race, but traditions do not belong to races, as once again, race is a social construct. @rhythmythyc Actually caucasian acedemia was originally based on the works of many of the Greek scholars. Much of this material was preserved, translated and exanded upon by Muslim scholars before the crusaders took this material back to Europe. Many of the greek scholars studied in the universities in Africa, particularly Egypt. Plato, Thales, Archimedes etc... So the university tradition is far from being an originally European ideal. But I feel what ur tryin 2 say though, Its real talk...

The only acts that were of real substance (in my opinion) were Lupe Fiasco, Zeta Tau Alpha, and Eta Mu (UH Alphas). I was personally angry because I felt that my step team, which had dissolved by that point, should have performed in the show, since it was on the campus of Texas Southern University.
I commend the ladies of Zeta Tau Alpha for their hard work and determination. Last time I checked, that's the sort of thing that leads to victory.
If you look at it purely from the standpoint that stepping is an art form/sport, there's no possible reason for anyone (Black, White, or otherwise) to be angry.
If you want to win, you have to practice. It is obvious that these ladies did a lot of that. Does it really make sense to be incensed that some White women won a stepshow because they STEPPED? It's ridiculous.
The bottom line: they learned their routine, they practiced their routine, they executed their routine. They deserved to win.

This is better than I thought it would be. However, it's not the greatest thing since sliced bread like people are making it out to be. If a bunch of AKAs did the same routine I seriously doubt they would've won. It boils down to the fact the predominantly Black crowd lost their mind when they saw group of White girls stepping. Stepping is a tradition with African American, most Latino and Multi cultural and even Asian Greek Orgs. But stepping is not limited to people in Greek orgs. Churches, High School step teams, and step teams not affiliated with Greek's orgs practice the tradition of stepping.

I have to say this. Yes they did a good job but they were not the winners. I came from a chapter that use to win stepshow competitions all over the Southeast. We as African Americans(AA) have to stop being impressed when caucasians do or perform something that is "black". Anyone that is a true stepper know that there were alot of "popcorn" mistakes. They did a good job but if they were a black step team they would have never won the stepoff.

A step show is part of a tradition of crossing over and joining a Greek Letter organization on campus not a profession. It all boils down to the effort and creativity of a particular line or chapter in preparing for a particular event and as part of "their" crossing over. It is something that people remember forever. So on any given campus any of the sororities or fraternities can come out on top. And in this particular event ZTA did. And that is not necessarily a bad thing.

Zeta was considerably better than AKA. They deserved first place and I'm disappointed that my community (blacks) didn't lose more graciously. Zeta was fantastic and tremendously better than the other sororities. There's no way the scoring could have been close. Shame on Coca Cola for bowing to politics and awarding a tie to AKA. Next time, AKA, bring your A game.

After seeing both performances, I believe the judges were fair in awarding first place to zeta tau alpha. I hope this loss inspires every sorority, black, white and otherwise, to step up to the challenge of being better next time.

Black people have had tremendous influence on American culture, proportionately greater that our numbers and our position within U.S. society. That a white sorority has adopted some of our culture is just one more example of black influence on American culture. That's a good thing.

Any black person who thinks they have any kind of right to bring back racism towards white people is criminally insane. There are HEROES who fought til their DEATH to make sure we can live in the world we take advantage of today. There is no race. Love is colorblind. No love is BLIND.
One day we will all be the same color, and everyone can live the way people should have been living this whole time.

Part of what makes the world so great is the differences that people have, but people should look favorably upon those differences rather than (as here) using them as an excuse to hate on someone.

My daughter is 9 years old and the only African American in her school she is in the fourth grade and gets discriminated against on a weekly basis all because she is an African American. African American's do not perpetuate racism especially amongst our children and I remind her everyday that it is because of Martin Luther King that everyone is created equal he died for every non-white person to be treated as such it never goes away.

@Maidong07 But you see, there are still people with lighter skin than white that knock us back almost a hundred years just because they simply can't see that we are all equal. I don't doubt there is still discrimination, I should know as well. I get crap because I'm white all the time, this is why I live in middle-class suburbia in a mostly white neighborhood, not because I hate people who are different than me, but because people are too fucking ignorant for their own good.

Original stepping? not really. good, yes. I just hope that these girls understand the history of this tradition. I just get tired of having our African American culture mocked, commercialized, and stolen. Just acknowledge that this tradition is not yours. It is really irritating to see so many signature sorority and fraternity moves duplicated. Yes, they did a good job but they unknowingly disrespected the tradition. It's a very Elvis, Pat Boone performance. Entertaining but not original.

@boomchick2309 Race is a social construct, there is no "us" and "them". While we should acknowledge the history of racial injustice, it is time to move to a post-racial society. "This tradition is not yours" - you could just as well say that any tradition does not belong to another race, but traditions do not belong to races, as once again, race is a social construct. Somehow I doubt you'd like to have to acknowledge that going to college is a Caucasian tradition... so keep race out of it.

@rhythmythyc Actually caucasian acedemia was originally based on the works of many of the Greek scholars. Much of this material was preserved, translated and exanded upon by Muslim scholars before the crusaders took this material back to Europe. Many of the greek scholars studied in the universities in Africa, particularly Egypt. Plato, Thales, Archimedes etc... So the university tradition is far from being an originally European ideal. But I feel what ur tryin 2 say though, Its real talk...

Im black, and i loved the performance somethings could have had a lil more precision but ...u ladies need to forget all the negative stuff that was said bc your routine was different, your ideas were different, hell YALL were different to this type of competition. the only way to succeed these days is TO BE DIFFERENT!!! I was at the regional competition in Houston.
The only acts that were of real substance (in my opinion) were Lupe Fiasco, Zeta Tau Alpha, and Eta Mu (UH Alphas). I was personally angry because I felt that my step team, which had dissolved by that point, should have performed in the show, since it was on the campus of Texas Southern University.
I commend the ladies of Zeta Tau Alpha for their hard work and determination. Last time I checked, that's the sort of thing that leads to victory.

If you look at it purely from the standpoint that stepping is an art form/sport, there's no possible reason for anyone (Black, White, or otherwise) to be angry.
If you want to win, you have to practice. It is obvious that these ladies did a lot of that. Does it really make sense to be incensed that some White women won a stepshow because they STEPPED? It's ridiculous.
The bottom line: they learned their routine, they practiced their routine, they executed their routine. They deserved to win.

If you intend to argue as an intellectual (i.e. your futile attempt at using big words.. lol), you should probably represent "your people" in a civilized and sophisticated way.
