I remember the first bar scene Pacino went into u/c.The place was located at the corner of 14 st& 9 ave a real leather bar at that time heart of the meatpacking district, the movie is so bad but watchable in the same vein of showgirls only without the body count
So from what I personally can understand from watching this movie many many times. Stuart is the killer, and the Cop who was gay who also played in Maniac, Joe Spinnel, he was also a killer and most likely Pacino was one as well. Movie points to multiple killers of the same crime in same way.
Highly overlooked in the parallel lines of the filming of CRUISING was the early work, comprising THE X PORTFOLIO of photographer ROBERT MAPPLETHORPE. I'm interested to know if Mapplethorpe knew of the filming of this movie, and whether or not he was involved in any level, and/or had any contact with William Friedkin.
This movie is brilliant, and is an important piece of gay history. Friedkin and Pacino did a superb job, and there is a serious relationship herein overlooked, but crucial.
Wow, people rely WAY WAY WAY too much on movies to be a source of something so phenomenal and ground breaking. If you want to make a point about something, get off your ass and just say it and stop pissing around waiting for a movie to come out to do it for you. Movies are for entertainment usually. Sometimes they are more, but it doesn't hurt to just watch one on occasion for the sheer fun of it w/out expecting so damn much!! Get real.
This movie turns me on do they still have gays bar like that in New York if so then I must go to check it out. Its sad because Al Panchio should've had some sex with sexy gay men in leather.
@TheNaomiengland Hardly. This was 1980, just before the dawn of AIDS. You can't even get into a regular bar now without getting hassled by a doorman. Back then tho you could drug and fuck right on the floor. We all knew the managers, bartenders, etc. and they'd comp ur drinks even. If someone OD'd they get them to a hospital w/ out making a scene of it. NYC cracked down hard on the gay community and sex businesses. Even bookstores are just about gone so good luck. They exist but not like then.
@BreezesofConey In my hometown Sarastota there is only one gay bar so be grateful theres gay clubs in New York. Sarastota is bible belt town. How I wish to be in New York to vist the gay clubs Do you like Madonna do you think she done good for the gays and lesbians?
@TheNaomiengland I understand how you feel, I grew up in the English countryside and came of age in the late 60's so coming to NYC in the early 70s put me into tilt just a bit. It is true, we do have so much here, even still, when compared to other places. However, you aren't so far that you couldn't make treks into town to say hello once in a while, as so many do :) Is your one gay bar bad? Good? The good thing to consider is that the competition must be smaller where you are. Take it easy ;)
@BreezesofConey No its crap the gay men were sweet. What part of England are you from I am from Luton then I move to the midlands then to Kingston Upon Thames. Did you like the Sex Pistols when they were in the heyday?
@TheNaomiengland I'm from Surrey, roundabout that area but lived in London for a few years and then left so not entirely too far from where you are. I did/do like the pistols, I listened to a little bit of everything then but was mostly full head into disco at that time altho I do remember when their popularity was increasing.
I dont agree ; it's a pretentious and self-indulgent movie with no point to it.Its pretentious because it uses and focuses on a narrow sub-culture of activity which it thinks will be 'sensational' which it isnt and controversial which it is only because its pretentious and silly.Strip away its 'gimmicks' and its a routine police murder thriller which is at best amusing cos its so contrived and at worst repellent and completely boring after 20 minutes
@kenfig Get a job with siskel and ebert, everyone's a bloody critic. How is it pretentious and how did you get the impression it was intended to be? Perhaps you're bothered by the film for other reasons. Not all stories have to have a point to be interesting. I see lots of lame ass big budget movies released weekly right now that are nothing but special effects and candy for the physical senses. It could be argued the same for them.
@BreezesofConey What's the point in discussing it with YOU when you read only what you WANT to into people's comments. If you'd BOTHERED to read it, which you haven't,evidently ( or you would'nt be asking me WHY it's pretentious), what's the point in ? : 1, me explaining what you haven't already read AGAIN, so you dont read it a SECOND time (why WOULD you if you didnt read it once ?) and 2, how can you mouth off with your militant diatribe when you haven't read my comment in the FIRST place ????
@kenfig uhhh... this reply is pretty redundant with lots of rambling about me not reading your comment when I have. You didn't back up your opinions very well. It would be like saying, it sucked b/c it was a bad movie. Considering the motive of most mainstream movie makers which is to produce goods to be dished out to a mainstream audience, you can't figure out why they would assume most audiences would be shocked by the subject matter of this film at the time? 90% of ur comment was an opinion.
@BreezesofConey Its NOT ; you DIDNT read my comment, as you asked "why is it pretentious ?" when i explained why. What 'back up' did i need then to say that it focuses on a narrow subculture of gay activity which many people would think sensational, sordid or both so its no point trying to convince me that's not a self-indulgent gimmick which a lot of the movie relies too heavily on with little about the murder investigations with a smattering of muddled and confusing melodrama re Al's sexuality
@BreezesofConey ....which ended the film abruptly with little conclusion and without being conclusive about the identity of the killer.Hardly me saying 'it sucked cos it's a bad movie' is it ?? Duh also, what's "90 % of your comment was an opinion" mean ? Did that using a calculator did you ? What was the OTHER 10% then ? if thats not just a glib statement ; if its not,why make it ? Its meaningless ; talk about not backing things up.
@scottvska I think he out Michael Manned Michael Mann with To Live and Die in LA. I think the film also contained the most shocking death of the protagonist ever.
You made me do that

Yes, there was a similar case in London too...a guy who cruised the heavy gay clubs for pick ups and murdered them during bondage: see Michael Lupo
