Awful crash... it doesn´t matter now, but it was Santander´s fault anyway... and the guy standing in the finish line is REALLY lucky, he wasn´t hit by a really close margin...
White car pushed the yellow car at the opening of the clip. Yellow car pushed him back when they were running flat out down the straight. Fatal move. Looked like a total disregard for someone else's life to me.

For something to Sergio nicknamed him the "Loco" for his driving in the first race in Quintero, when it hits a containment barriers to follow along, I sensed that something would happen to future.

Sergio Santander was one of those drivers who came out to run from the first round like the last, and race of those drivers was insistent that I was looking for one side or the other again and again to spend, if you have the full video before the collision, fijate well as runs, Gonzalo Alcalde was a tough nut to crack, it was hard to pass and were fighting in that race in third place for 10 laps

The tracks designer should be draw and qauterd.. grrr.. ok ok.. at least brought before court for neglegence.
I still remember how it was that Saturday (not Sunday as said elsewhere) on Sep. 26 '87. I was 7 at the time, and I saw the ras and the moemen when the two racers fought, it is something I never have forgotten, I have spoken with various drivers that studied this race day and they tell me that when you collide, it sounds like a bomb, a loss that is made to feel (?). Later
Well, I see two people from a medical staff, but Santander was trapped into the car and there wasn't an specialist emergency staff so the same pilots tried their best to help... just remember the Williamson's tragic crash at Zandvoort in 1973... it's 14 years before but you can take it as an example.
No. Williamson's death was a direct result of officials not being able to communicate with the drivers. They thought that David Purley was the driver of the burning car and misunderstood that he was trying to SAVE his friend Roger. One official present told an investigator that he thought David Purley was trying to roll the car over to get back in to continue the race. They didn't know Roger was even IN the car til they rolled it over, and found his charred body. He burned to death.
another example of helping drivers: niki lauda nurburgring 1976, the marshall's were too far, so arturo merzario, harald ertl and brett lunger got him out of the car.
Williamson died due to asphyxiation but you're right it was an example of a piss poor on track emergency response team. In fact they were very CLOSE to the accident but since none of them had recieved much training nor had the right equipment they didn't really move a muscle until it was way too late. If the officials had gotten there sooner, he may still be alive.
This clash marked the end of an era in motorsport in chile that is just starting to return to a more professional manner, Sergio was Arica in northern Chile my uncle, a close friend of my father. and was a pilot with international projections for the season which continued. Arica in a Autodromo with his name and there is a keen reminder of the ever

Arica in a Autodromo with his name and there is a keen reminder of the ever ...
Was there any medical assistance present? Don't get me wrong, it's wonderful how everybody tried to help, but when you're smashed it's no good being carried around like that. Maybe stabilize him before transport, that's the most important part.
He died of MASSIVE head Trauma...this is not a "stop and take your time to stabilize" situation...This is an "Extricate, Load and Go" situation. I know it looks rough and tumble, but at the extrication point he was already full arrest, (no breathing, no pulse), for 18 minutes...so in layman's terms he was already dead.
Now, on a less emotional analysis, I find it an unforgivable neglect that two experienced drivers locked wheels in the middle of a straight at max speed. Alcalde could and should have avoided that.
Thanks for the video BeckMax, that accident was a major tragedy on Chilean car racing. I was watching the race live on TV that Sept Sunday. Understandably you edited out some gruesome passages, I remember the live broadcast showed Alcalde struggling to get out of the car with his broken arm.
Being a Chilean I should take offence for that last bit. But it's rather embarrasing that one of the leading economies in South America doesn't have a decent venue for motor sports nowadays. The Las Vizcachas circuit in the video is no more.
WOW that was a huge crash!!!!!!! RIP Sergio Santander

gelfeldt 2 years ago
BeckMax 2 years ago

Arianovich 2 years ago
BeckMax 2 years ago
Arianovich 2 years ago

Nope, no one was hurted but both drivers (Alcalde, the white car driver, escaped with minor injuries).

O.K. here's my pidgin spanish translation:
I still remember how it was that Saturday (not Sunday as said elsewhere) on Sep. 26 '87. I was 7 at the time, and I saw the ras and the moemen when the two racers fought, it is something I never have forgotten, I have spoken with various drivers that studied this race day and they tell me that when you collide, it sounds like a bomb, a loss that is made to feel (?). What kind of "medical staff" is this?
bronsonlee777 3 years ago
Well, I see two people from a medical staff, but Santander was trapped into the car and there wasn't an specialist emergency staff so the same pilots tried their best to help... just remember the Williamson's tragic crash at Zandvoort in 1973... it's 14 years before but you can take it as an example.
BeckMax 3 years ago
Zanomatt 3 years ago
actually, he died from asphyxation, but yeah.
another example of helping drivers: niki lauda nurburgring 1976, the marshall's were too far, so arturo merzario, harald ertl and brett lunger got him out of the car.
tommykl 2 years ago

Was there any medical assistance present? Don't get me wrong, it's wonderful how everybody tried to help, but when you're smashed it's no good being carried around like that. Maybe stabilize him before transport, that's the most important part.
liobeking 3 years ago
He died of MASSIVE head Trauma...this is not a "stop and take your time to stabilize" situation...This is an "Extricate, Load and Go" situation. I know it looks rough and tumble, but at the extrication point he was already full arrest, (no breathing, no pulse), for 18 minutes...so in layman's terms he was already dead.

Now, on a less emotional analysis, I find it an unforgivable neglect that two experienced drivers locked wheels in the middle of a straight at max speed. Alcalde could and should have avoided that.

pateli 3 years ago
Thanks for the video BeckMax, that accident was a major tragedy on Chilean car racing. I was watching the race live on TV that Sept Sunday. Understandably you edited out some gruesome passages, I remember the live broadcast showed Alcalde struggling to get out of the car with his broken arm.

tats horrible!!! plus i didnt know they had circuits in Chile
birrman2008 3 years ago
Being a Chilean I should take offence for that last bit. But it's rather embarrasing that one of the leading economies in South America doesn't have a decent venue for motor sports nowadays. The Las Vizcachas circuit in the video is no more.
