  • They were there before Peter Paul or Mary...they were poor businessmen

  • maybe the best videotape of the Kingston Trio ! Great man ! thanks.

  • my best song!!

  • Love them!!!

  • i like to thank my old friend Richard,, he turn me on to them,, he has pass by now, an in heaven with his best band !!!

  • Beautiful!!! Timeless!

  • These guys are and always will be absolutely great!!!!!

  • War is so horrible and stupid; False Flag Vietnam Conflict. I lost my big brother for what?

  • @relopez100 You lost him to something better than most of us; something better than most of us deserve. ..and you ought not have to have lost him.

  • omg i sing this song in chorus because its so beatiful

  • What kind of 12 string is John playing during "Early Morning Rain"? It sounds beautiful.

  • @RDBeatnik: You can see their upright bass player at 1:35.

  • Why are they all playing acoustic guitar? Why no banjo or bass? No wonder Bob Dylan left the folk movement. Don't get me wrong, I like the Kingston Trio, but it was 1966. Hendrix, the Beatles, the Stones, the Kinks, Dylan, etc. They couldn't compete. They didn't have a chance. I admire them for not plugging in their guitars, going electric.

  • I love this song.

  • @rikmomentary They didn't have a chance but they survived ...and so did we.Fortunately..Art has nothing to do with competition

  • Try Asian women **busizz4me.info**

  • I blessed thank youtube for all ye do fer us ole folk! ( still like the youtube purely)

  • My heart glows still from this music, "OUR" music in the 60s.

My personal reasons for being anti-war?

1 Onsite redcrosswork with medivac casualties from 'Nam, in KY, and

    2. the theft of ALL my complete collection of the Kingston trio's albums by Army movers during the post housing crowding in '68.

And at the time, I had to think to decide which was worse.

These videos take me to golden hours!

"The Lord respects me when I work, but he loves me when I sing."

  • where have all the flowers gone?

  • This was the Kingston Trio at the height of their success, in my judgement. They could have gone ANYWHERE and done these songs and have been appreciated. Their music touched our souls, it seems to me. I think it always will.

  • This is for all of our loved ones and friends who are in the military and are not with their families, thank you, GOD Bless you, We love you !!! You are true Heros

  • RThis version of this song is quit good. But there is a version singing by Marlene Dietrich.

  • Very good band, easily listening music.

  • Wonderful music by the Trio. Maybe the best line up ever.

    Gunnar L Sweden

  • How I miss those guys. So full of spirit and joy. Absolutely fantastic!

  • Pete Seeger got the ideal of this song from a Ukranian folk song that appears in Soviet novelist Mikhail Sholokov`s and Quiet Flows the Don..

  • Timeless words...will we ever learn?

  • @skibluiz doesnt look like it.

  • great performance

  • Beautiful music

  • Pete Seegers classic ballard just lives on, great folk singer.

  • as i posted eariler these guys were largely unknown in the UK...absolutely brilliant in my opinion and im spreading the word!

    Jim

  • @captainsoul1953 - Long ago, Captain, they were very well known in the UK and around the world. In the years immediately preceding the Beatles, the Kingston Trio was the most successful vocal group in the world, with more than 10 million albums sold in about 3 1/2 years (unbelievable for the time, 1958-62). In the last month of 1959, they had four albums in Billboard's Top 10 for four weeks running. Nobody else has ever done that for even one week, not even the Beatles.

  • Wow!!!!!!I its been a few decades since id last heard this one. Thanks for posting an american classice!

  • I love Where Have All the Flowers Gone. It's one of several memorable anti-war songs to emerge in the Vietnam era.

  • Pat Horine, a Lexington, KY native who performed with The New Kingston Trio in the late 1960s, died in a fire a few years back.

  • I watched a bio on Pete Seeger nd he mentioned that someone came up to him after he sang this song and said"I am a veteran and lost many of my friends in Viet Nam and I was going t kill you tonite until I heard you sing this song. Pete took him aside and they sang it together and the man said. I feel "healed". Touching...

  • The very old song... I love it.

  • The arrangement seems to borrow a bit from Buddy Holly's "Crying, Waiting, Hoping". Nothing wrong with that. ^_^

  • @DallasHammster its a total different song...???

  • @DallasHammster They were prior to Buddy Holly. He borrowed from them.

  • There's something different/special about the John Stewart era but, can't quite put to words.

  • John Stewart had a very distinctive voice, quite different from Dave Guard's. I also prefer the Stewart era sound. I saw the trio in 1981 when only Bob Shane was left, and it just wasn't the same.

  • That has to be it. I ask because, I saw a Docmentary on the trio, this past year, It

talked about their whole career of course.

ALso, it talked about the Guard era vs the John Stewart era.

  • I've listen to the more recent version of the group. It just doesn't have the same magic.

  • I've seen clips of the more recent versions of the group> its just not

the same. Also, I wish they'd pick

more younger singers to carry on

    the group.

  • A great piece of Americana. Folk singers were great storytellers, and the Kingston did this with simple and beautiful harmony. I miss this era in our musical heritage.

  • As much as I loved The Kingston trio from about 1957 onward, I always preferred Ian and Sylvia's version of this song. I like it even better than Gordon Lightfoot's own version. For those who may not know, Lightfoot wrote this song.

  • Pete Seeger wrote this song!

  • We have a littel confusion here....yes, pete ZSeeger wrtoe Where Have All The Flowers Gone, but my comment was about Early Morning Rain, the second song on this video. That one is one of Gordon Lightfoot's most famous songs.

  • You're absolutely right! I was listening to Flowers...

  • I believe it was Gordon Lightfoot who wrote this song.

  • @debobwan - As of course Bob Shane would know. FWIW and for those of you who know it (see the "College Concert" album) debobwan is the SN for none other than Bob Shane, founding member of the Kingston Trio and still going strong at age 76 - and he can still sing the daylights out of this and every other one of the more than 300 that his Kingston Trio recorded. Thanks Bob! from Jim

  • Who is the bass player shown briefly in the background?

    Jim

  • Dean "Mad Dog"Reilly

  • @captainsoul1953 Dean Reilly..

  • @captainsoul1953 Dean Reilly who replaced Buck Wheatt in 1961/62

  • This is very special.....as a Brit i knew very little about these guys.... very little radio play apart from Tom Dooley......but in the last 10 years i have grown to love them...thanks USA for this great music

    Jim

  • No captainsoul...thank you! For the beatles, stones, led zep, the who, pink floyd and the list goes on ... I only wish music was like it used to be... but then again, i wish the whole world was like it used to be

  • So sad- they're all gone now, even John Stewart

  • Oh no! I didn't know that. It's really sad. They had strong influence on me.

  • Bob Shane is still alive

  • @richintalent Bob Shane is still living, although he has retired from the act. Three of the men who performed with the Kingston Trio during their heyday of the late 1950s-mid 1960s, Nick Reynolds, Dave Guard, and John Stewart ( who replaced Guard), have passed away.

  • ...Love this version, as well as the Johnny Rivers version, both are timeless brilliant 60's pop song classics!! Peace, love, happiness, Gary in PA.

  • ooops sorry about that post. nevermind

  • Kelly This is for veterans day, Get ready.

  • muy buena cancion

  • The best trio of the World ever!!!

  • Many gifts they gave us.

  • stewart is in the middle-he played as a member at times -had a great solo carreer and also played as a sit in at times with fleetwood mac as well as stevie nicks and Lindsey buckingham.

  • amen.

  • dang..the guy look like Bush

  • Ha, I thought the same thing, then read your comment. Glad I'm not the only one!

  • How right you are!

  • GOD Bless the Kingston Trio, Nick, Dave, Bob and John.

  • 4 in a trio?

  • John replaced Dave but was with them long enough to be considered an official member.

  • to NEMstrodamus

    4?

  • My parents played their records till the grooves were nearly worn down! I can't even think about my childhood without Denver, Lightfoot, PP&m and of course the Trio! The early sountrack to my life!!!

  • this is touching song. so long ago~ full of memories...

  • these guys are great, have heard, i think,

every song they have ever sung wado for posting

  • RIP Nick. Bless your heart for your music. May you forever sing in heaven.

  • great song and music which not heard much around this time of day.very much enjoy.

thousand thanks for sharing with us.

  • My mother bought the Trio's albums and played them when we were kids. If you have them, listen to "Bimini" and "Don't Cry Katie", and the classic, "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?". Thanks, Nick, Dave and Bob.

  • And thank you John Stewart

  • Great song thanks for sharing.

  • Goodbye Nick, I should have visited more.

  • Rest in Peace, Nicky, you were the best and from all accounts a nice, down-to-earth person too. Now you're singing with John Stewart, Dave Guard and the angels.

  • Rip Nick. I didn't agree with your politics. But no one could ever deny your talent.

  • RIP Nick Reynolds - we'll miss you!

Guys, I posted some Kingston trio songs as a tribute to him: "Ally Ally Oxen Free" and "One More Town". Check it out!

  • Rest in peace Nick Reynolds, you will be missed.

  • RIP Nick Reynolds - thanks for the joy of music.

  • I love this song. Thanks for posting this.

  • This version of Early Morning Rain is waaay better than their studio version.

  • The guy on the left looks like george bush

  • Along with being great musicians, they were hilarious ad-libbing and poking fun at each other. One time Nick broke a string and said I'm going to get another string. In reality he had a backup he just grabbed.

  • they sing with their heart, rock music forgot it

  • if you listen to it by other people you will see they rush the timing

  • As timeless and poignant as the day it was written. Just beautiful.

  • It's great that you can see these performances on YouTube. I saw the Trio three times live in the 1960's, and they were fantastic, dynamic performers. Their studio recordings are still among the best sounding in all of record-dom.

  • Paul, I wonder if that's the D28 that you told me you bought from Shane. - Joe

  • This is also one of the best versions I've heard of "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" And that trio could really play their guitars, too. Just fantastic.

  • "Too bad this song is not Early Morning Rain..."

"Early Morning Rain" is performed after "Where Have All the Flowers Gone," as mentioned in the "About This Video" box. It is introduced by John Stewart. I believe this was one of the final performances by the original Kingston Trio

  • This is actually the second incarnation of the Kingston Trio. Dave Guard left in 1961

  • This is probably the best version of "Early Morning Rain" ever performed.

  • Delora and Roger has gone ,they loves this song they sang it at the park 35 years ago it was great times indeed.

  • it hurts me-so many gone, and still here!

  • I just adore these guys. This stuff never gets old.

  • @ambermarie1204 unfortunately so....

  • Thanks for the post. Has it been so long? Time to unpack the vinyl! My Kingston collection includes at the Hungry i, At Large, and simply The Kingston Trio. Thanks for the memories!

  • RIP john

  • John Stewart also had a brother, Mike Stewart, who played with the We Five in the 1960's. The We Five had a hit with "You Were On My Mind". Mike passed away a few years ago, and now with John gone, I bet the Stewart Brothers are having a jam session up in heaven.

JOHN STEWART: YOU MAY NOT HAVE GIVEN A D*** ABOUT A GREENBACK DOLLAR, BUT WE SURE GAV A D*** ABOUT YOU!

GOD BLESS YOU, JOHN! YOU WILL BE MISSED!

  • @Jaybird1103 Oops I misspelled GAVE

  • God Bless You, John Stewart! You were an excellent singer, musician, and songwriter. You will be missed dearly.

John Stewart and Dave Guard, two men who performed with the Kingston Trio, are now gone. I think there was one other man from Kentucky who played with Bob Shane in the New Kingston Trio in the late 60s-early 70' who died in a house fire, I forgot his name, but if it comes back, I'll post it.

  • Had to check it out-found a couple of sources that said Pat Horine died 8-4-04 in a house fire. Jim Connor apparently is still alive, though I find nothing about current performances. Bill Zorn is in the current Trio with George Grove & Rick Dougherty. Of course, the golden-voiced Roger Gambill died in 1985 of a heart attack at the age of 42.

  • @olytanis Rest in Peace to these men who performed with the Kingston Trio who are no longer with us but are making a joyful noise in heaven:

    Dave Guard

    John Stewart

    Nick Reynolds

    Roger Gambill

    Pat Horine

  • @Jaybird1103 Pat Horine died in a house fire, and Roger Gambill died of a heart attack in 1985. Also, in 2008, Nick Reynolds passed away.

  • Great music. Sorry to lose John. God bless!

  • This really brings back good memories of the mid-sixties, after the beginning of a tumultuous decade, The Kingston Trio always soothed us with their great harmony and strumming guitars; And now we've lost John

Stewart, announced today on TKT website and

reported on the internet news headlines. Even after the trio broke up, he enjoyed quite a music popularity. A great entertainer. cmd, jax

  • thank you!

I heard 'Where Have all the Flowers Gone?' so long ago- in a terrible (sorry..) version by Marlene Dietrich, believe it or not- ugh. but this beautiful version gives me chills..

  • "Early Morning Rain," -- this is one of the best versions of that song I've ever heard! John Stewart, thank you. R.I.P.

  • A six pack and some old Trio records. priceless

  • 1966--the year I was married. John Stewart had replaced Bob Shane, who left the Kingston Trio to form The Whiskey Hill Singers because he wanted to return to authentic folk music, as the KT had "gone commercial," in his view.

  • It was Dave Guard who left the group to form the Whiskey Hill Singers. Bob Shane was one of the last original members of the group, keeping the act going after Reynolds and Stewart had both left.

  • You are correct. I just met Bob Shane's son. He lives in Atlanta and is engaged to the daughter of a former neighbor. Please excuse my switching Guard and Shane. Getting old, I guess. :-)

  • The song is painfull because it's about 3 minutes too long, I feel depressed.

  • Good music seems to have died off these days.

  • When will we ever learn....

  • u get the right point. thanks for ure comments 5inthehole

  • Miss the music and miss the shows that used to have it. Bring back the variety shows! How about a Hootenanny Revival Hour?!

  • I remember seeing this Andy Williams Special. Maybe it was his last TV show and such a fitting song. Thanks for bringing back memories of long times passing.

  • I use to play that song...where have the flowers?...and bawl my guts out about...my relatives who died...in the concentration camps...and so many other loved ones I lost...too young in my life...it's nice to hear it without the need to cry...

  • as a kid my brother law would play their greatest hits on an old reel to reel player..i knew all their songs by heart

  • 1966!

  • blair227 you said a mouth full :-)

  • This is real music. Todays music has no heart, soul, melody or talent.

  • deffo

  • absolutely right!

  • Amen to that.

  • Oh man.....Early Morning Rain is such a great song. Alot of the folk songs had a sad sound to them. But The Trio were my fav way back when.....thx for the walk down Memory Lane.

  • You disgust me. What is the world comming to? You can't even watch an innocent video without seeing something that defiles the amazing power of procreation.

  • I remember this - thanks for the fantastic post.

  • I believe that the latest version of the Kingston Trio has four members. That's amazing !

  • The actual Trio has three, but they have two background players: a bass player and another one whose instrument I can't remember right now.

  • The Trio, even dating back to the earliest performances at the Hungry i, included a bass side man.

  • thank you so much! all these songs make me so nostalgic, i get weepy whenever i hear them. my dad loved this music and it just makes me think of nights where he'd get a bit drunk and pull out all the records--kingston trio, limeliters, chad mitchell trio--and we would just sing and sing.

  • Thank you!Beautiful!

  • Welcome.

  • Great video, I am very glad to see that good music hasn't been forgotten!

  • What a shame the Variety Show died and due to music rights will never be on dvd. So many great performances that will never be seen. Thanks for posting this and thanks to You Tube as well.

  • Your most welcome. This is sad news. :'(

  • The bad part is that all those great music variety shows were on TV when you only had that tinny little speaker in the TV.

  • This proves YouTube is the best. I sang this song with three others at July 4, 2002 at the Grand Canyon for the guests. It was very well recieved, especially after 9/11. BTW: John Stewart already replaced Dave Guard when the released this single...go back and listen.

  • Ok...i'll be most proud off. =D

  • That version of "Where have all the flowers gone" is the best I have ever heard. I like the quicker pace than you normally hear it done and Stewart's guitar playing is tremendous there. Definitely an all time classic.

  • Thanks...

  • Dave Guard usually played the banjo.

  • Dave Guard was my favorite -- love that "Scotch and Soda" -- in the big trio in the sky now.

  • great song--great group

  • Once again... They're @ there greatness.

  • Dave Guard playing a twelve string. Nick Reynolds playing an eight string. And Bob Shane singing so effortlessly. These guys were great.

  • They're @ there greatness.

  • OK, I'll bite...where is Dave Guard? That's John Stewart in the trio. Based on the nature of Dave's departure, I doubt he is playing back-up.

  • Favourite song and group of all time.

  • IC =D enjoy the vids...!
