I really wish Karl Malone and the Jazz never beat the Rockets in the playoffs so I could have seen Jordan's Bulls vs Hakeem's Rockets. Would have been epic
I've lived in Houston all my life and I am a die hard Rockets fan.. But I would be lying if I told you I never pictured what it would be like if we took Michael Jordan instead of Hakeem back in 1984.
@miamigreyhound You're absolutely right. Hakeem was supremely talented, athletic, intelligent, graceful, you name it. He just didn't get the attention he deserved probably because he isn't American. Meanwhile David Robinson, whose career stats match up well with Olajuwan, got all the attention in the U.S. and internationally. But anyone who watches this video and is a true fan of the game will fully appreciate him and his rightful place as one of the top five centers of all time!
suoer cool video. Love the music. Hakeem the greatest center in modern NBA history. A tremendous athlete his game was super versatile. Dunks, steal, assists, jumpers spins blocks, blocks, block,s blocks!!
I remember the first time I tried the dream shake on someone. I don't even think I did it right & made them look stupid as fuck. Hakeem is one of the best players to ever play basketball. His talent, not to mention how elusive he was for being a big man, is something we haven't seen today. We may never see someone as big as him be as versatile as he was.
If Hakeem played in today's NBA that is so historicaly bad on center position, he would average over 30 ppg and win MVP and DPOY every single year.. It would be high comedy to watch him murder the weak competition on center. When you realize that guy like Chandler is considered shot block specialist and he averaged 1.1 blocks per game last season and Hakeem in his prime 4.6 than it's just laughable..
@HymanKaplan That's why Shaq said in an recent interview, that Dwight Howard is the best center right now because he has no competition in that position. While in Shaq's generation he had to face Patrick Ewing, Hakeem Olajuwon, David Robinson and many others.
it was an absolute joy to watch this guy at his peak...he had amazing skill..he had a great touch...unbelievable anticipation and defensive ability...amazing quickness too.
Hakeem "The Dream" Olajuwon, his nickname should be "The Nightmare" because Ewing & D-Rob to this day wake up in the middle of the night with cold sweats thinking about playing against him.
for me he was best center ever... imagine if he would have been playing in chamberlain years? he cound have 20+ blocks and i think 100 pts too :) i love his post arsenal, his defence , everything in hakeem was dream :)
In this video, he swats MJ (while in college), strips Magic and dunks on AND blocks Kareem multiple times. Pretty good guys he's dominating. Oh and he won back-to-back NBA championships AND is one of four guys, with only another being recent (David Robinson), to record a Quadruple-double. BEST.CENTER.EVER.
The best thing I like about him (aside from his Dream Shake) is his defense. When he goes for a block, he doesn't just swat them away in order to swat them away. He actually tries to send it towards a team mate of his so they can gain possession. Other players swats the ball towards out of bounds or to the stands so they can feel macho about it.
@nycsultan1 ...shaq did defeat olajuwon...he has a winning record vs hakeem in the reg.season, and they are 1-1 in playoff series..too bad people think he outplayed shaq in the 95 finals...he didnt
shaq= 28.0 ppg 12.5 rpg 6.3 apg 2.5 bpg on .595%
hakeem= 32.8 ppg 11.5 rpg 5.5 apg 2.bpg on .483%
hakeems took 10.5 more shots per game than shaq, and hakeems teammates were more efficient than he was
@FuShengAlex ...hakeem= no relevance beyond mentioning him in the same breath as mike, shaq,or using the year 1995
hakeem= all-nba 3rd team in 99..yet fewer pts, rbs, and assists than both barkley and pippen to become the liability in shaqs ownage of him in 99 playoffs
mike= rings with pippen in 96,97,98
hakeem= 1st round exit with pippen in 99 vs shaq, despite barkleys epic series of putting up prime barkley numbers
mike "had pippen" right?....hakeem= couldnt win a round with pippen..LMAO
shaqs "ownage" of Hakeem in '99 = the opportunity to be TD's bitch, lol. Not much of an award there. Hakeem's ownage of Shaq in '95 = NBA Title and MVP.
If Shaq cried when being swept by Hakeem, do you think MJ who lost to Shaq the same year woulda cried? Hmmm maybe we should ask Isiah that answer....LOLOL.
@shaqpopcorn34 He scored more points than Shaq in each of the 4 games. Just like he did with Robinson and Ewing. The fact we consider him the best center is not because of his numbers, but because of his overall skills. Shaq ranks in the top 20 of the best players ever because he dominated the league. But he dominated mostly because of his power and strength, than because of his skills. And Olajuwon did the very exact same thing against Kareem, Ewing, Robinson, Shaq and Karl Malone.
"It's not just his scoring, not just his rebounding or not just his blocked shots. People don't realize he was in the top seven in steals. He always made great decisions on the court" - Michael Jordan
its not russell's fault that he played in the 60's era. i firmly beliv that he can excel in whatever era he will play. he has a heart of a champion, the incomparable desire to win, greatest defensive instinct. simply put he is a ben wallace with the iq of magic, the tenacity of larry bird and the desire of mj.
It's not a travel. "Lifting the pivot foot alone does not constitute a travel; a player may pass, shoot, or request a timeout in that position. It is a travel once the foot is returned to the floor, or if a dribble is started."
during the 80's, the league were more enamored to bigs rather than guards with the exceptions of magic of course. i beliv if the bulls will have the first pick, im sure they are going to pick the dream ahead of mj as well. dream was just too good then. dream's number during his roy season is comparable to tim duncan's and we all know how much better dream is, was and ever will be. mj is goat, but the dream is nasty. he is the mj of centers. greatest c of all time.
olajuwon 1st pick sam bowie 2nd pick michael jordan 3rd. who would ever think olajuwon might not be the best pick. what a draft excluding of course sam bowie
@timezoneeable If I were a GM choosing now, even knowing how it all played out, I would probably pick Olajuwon. Any four other players, and you're going to the playoffs. Micheal himself only had one Jodanesque game agianst the Rockets, that I can recall. He struggled when Hakeem was in the middle. It's not a no brainer. Fun to comtemplate, though...best draft ever. 15 Greats.
"If I had to pick a center [for an all-time best team], I would take Olajuwon. That leaves out Shaq, Patrick Ewing. It leaves out Wilt Chamberlain. It leaves out a lot of people. And the reason I would take Olajuwon is very simple: he is so versatile because of what he can give you from that position. People don't realize he was in the top seven in steals. He always made great decisions on the court. For all facets of the game, I have to give it to him."
@PremiseTester dude i always say exactly the same thing. when i look at hakeem i think of mj. they are similar in that they are both perfect players who master every bball skill . ultimate weapons on the court.
I had no idea he was so fucking good! I am shocked right now. I only caught his games towards the end of his career. Better than Shaq by a mile. Does anyone else think his game shares a few similarities with Jordan's? His explosive first step and his tendency to throw himself into impossible situations and somehow find a way out seem to suggest common ground. Even some of his footwork looks uncannily like MJ's.

hakeem might not have been the greatest center ever, but he was almost certainly the smoothest.

@TributeToTesla It's offensive to have such a class act framed by such phony shock-for-money crap.

during the 80's, the league were more enamored to bigs rather than guards with the exceptions of magic of course. i beliv if the bulls will have the first pick, im sure they are going to pick the dream ahead of mj as well. dream was just too good then. dream's number during his roy season is comparable to tim duncan's and we all know how much better dream is, was and ever will be. mj is goat, but the dream is nasty. he is the mj of centers. greatest c of all time.

olajuwon 1st pick sam bowie 2nd pick michael jordan 3rd. who would ever think olajuwon might not be the best pick. what a draft excluding of course sam bowie

15 Greats.

Micheal Jordan on Hakeem:
"If I had to pick a center [for an all-time best team], I would take Olajuwon. That leaves out Shaq, Patrick Ewing. It leaves out Wilt Chamberlain. It leaves out a lot of people. And the reason I would take Olajuwon is very simple: he is so versatile because of what he can give you from that position. People don't realize he was in the top seven in steals. He always made great decisions on the court. For all facets of the game, I have to give it to him."

The MJ of centers. The one second explosion would startle you.

@PremiseTester dude i always say exactly the same thing. when i look at hakeem i think of mj. they are similar in that they are both perfect players who master every bball skill . ultimate weapons on the court.

The man wasn't playing basketball,he was dancing basketball.
If I had to be re-incarnated as a professional basketball player and
choose my skillset, as a guard I will go for MJ,as a center The Dream.
Best center ever.
