2 people are probably Beatles worshippers who thought no other music act can play beatlesque let alone made a great cover of this classic song. Jim Lea could play violin and Nod could sing like Sir Paul. Dave and Jim are doing a supurb job too, making it a song of their own. Brilliant. Slade should have been inducted in the Hall of Fame automatically.
I have checked other cover versions of the song, but Slade have really nailed it! Simply the best, they could do anything from small chanson type of songs to the loudest hardrock and everything inbetween. Noddy is the most versatile vocalist in the history of pop, although never recognized as such.
I laugh at these people who judge Slade for their 'skinhead' mistake or their 'glam rock' clothes. They had a manager and a pr company that steered them into skinhead and EVERYBODY dipped into glam. At the time it was cool. Floyd tried every trick in the book to get their break, so did David 'Bowie' Jones with his Lower Third and let's not forget 'The Laughing Gnome'. Even AC/DC's Brian Johnson was glam rock Geordie's lead singer, etc. They all used bandwagonism, Zep, Sabbath, et al. ;-)
@mcp666 You re right. They all joined into it. It does not matter, Slade had more talent and much better music than all the ones menitioned in your post.
@6977NO88 O.K. But don t you think it is more important how they were able to make a MAGNIFICENT cover of this Beatles track??? What do all that "skinhead" comments to do with musical ability and performance? I see this kind of comments on other prefame Slade stuff too, it does not compute for me.
@6977NO88 Why are you talking to me if you think that is pointless??? Yes the Beatles, Slade are covering the Beatles, ain t it??? Dave Gilmour? WTF??? Pink Floyd could not cover the Beatles like Slade . Gilmour could not sing classical. Noddy Holder could. Slade are one of the best UK bands ever, no doubt. Plus they made their own classical songs too. Floyds, great, but mostly tuneless drivel. So try all their stuff so you won t make another ill iformed prejudiced crap comment here.
@6977NO88 Excuse me this is a video of Slade performing a Beatles track, and you are asking somebody to tell something about "Gilmour"? Come on!!!
BTW Slade were a very brilliant, sheer versatile and diversified band with a brilliant life performance, don t be fooled by their "skinheads" in this upload or their Glam image or whatever. If you listen to all their albums, without musical prejudism, you will agree.
@carlphone Hi, I think I never said I did not like Slade, is a great band, the beatles will always be a blow job for me, for my particular view mode is an invention, never existed a band as big as it suggests, to me. Tell the Floyd because it's another great British band, that's the only relationship. But for example Bowie, he looked like a mannered, BECAUSE HE WAS! Never pretended anything just to gain popularity. Well, to be exact was bisexual, but come on, you know what I mean.
@6977NO88 No I don t fully understand, I think you made a fair point, but Bowie debeted from his sophisticated, intellectual mannerism, he made some great songs and incredible life performances, but I think he is somewhat overestimated by these aspects that have nothing to do wit real music quality. Bowie USED it to gain more popularity. Just as Slade had to go Glam to make a break, but besides Slade s music had more real depth and variety in styles and tunes, but that is my perception of it.
@carlphone . I'm a skinhead, I've never been hurt the comments of others about the idea 'skinhead'. Regular people will associate more to Nazism (which actually stupid) than Kingston or the slums of London, it is believed that the skin is racist and prejudiced stupid, but hey, not me. Only Slade (a very good band, widely enjoyed) was not in line with what it means to be Skin.
@thenewfella1994 YES but it is becoz I honestly think they were really magnificent and ridiculously underrated too. Do you know a better cover of Beatles Martha my Dear??? Let me know. I doubt it.
are they consider they originators of "rudeness" "punk" "heavy metal" influences? greatest underated band, love the original skinhead slash, then their clown acts!!!
@carlphone AWPFWU is someone who will never listen to music like this, which is a shame cos its a seriuosly good track, some people go through life listening to RnB and saying "axe instead of ask". They are basically like sheep following the rest of the sheep. And as much as it hurts me to say this, but this was the best version.
@hemaltailor Thanks for the explanation!!! I am amazed that not many people realize how brilliant the cover by Slade is! Maybe the public perception has become prejudist by the media who have never given them the credits they deserve! It is the best cover of the song by a street.
It sounds even more together and authentic than the original, however sophisticated that one may sound. This cover got me a monster fan of Slade when I first found out about it!
@carlphone dont worry about full payment for my explanation, whatever you can afford will be fine for now.
I like this cover, but lets be honest and say that its quite easy to cover a track and make it better, its a lot more tricky starting with nothing and creating an original, which I'm proud to say The Beatles have done over and over. However credit to Slade for taking a very discreet track off The White Album, giving it a good drum beat, and somehow jazzin it up a bit.
@hemaltailor Did I offer you any payment? BTW I have heard and read time and again what the Beatles created! Bear in mind that they did that in a time when their was hardly any competition for creating music!
Let s say a little 'jazzin up' etc. is that easy, can you refer to a better version than this one? At least, I can t find it.
I am also proud to say that Slade made songs in this music genre, such as 'Pity the mother', 'Kill em at the hotclub tonite', 'Find yourself a rainbow' etc.
@carlphone i cant think of a better version of this song, but I believe Eminem is serioulsy considering doing a cover of Piggies by the Beatles, watch this space, I'll tell you when my source gets more info Carlphone.
I dont think you'll find many covers of Martha My Dear cos the track is not one of their more popular songs, but Black box would possibly rival Slades version, and more than likely better it? its open for debate.
@hemaltailor Hmmm cant find the Blac box version, can you give me a link? Of course it is open for debate, I am always looking for interesting material.
I just saw the clip of Nobby s Nuts, very funny, but I have not tasted them did you?
@carlphone yeah I've tasted Nobby's nuts, and initially they taste pretty good, but after the 6th or 7th nut, it feels more like a chore than a savory snack.. I doubt you'll ever hear the Black Box version of Martha My dear, its a shame, cos I saw them play it live at The Owl & Pussy cat in Leicester a few years back,
@carlphone type into Google; Black Box, Ride on Time, this was their most famous track, the lead singer was actually a big fat black woman, but they replaced her on tv shows and music video's with a more slim balck woman for obvious marketing and male stroking reasons. Not sure if the track Martha my Dear by Black Box was ever released? I saw them at the Owl in Leicester, and I was drunk and under the influence of legal narcotics plus trying to woo a young lady who was a happy distraction.
noddy holder greatest singer ever can even metal too and soft rock too
