I had the pleasure of seeing Tong Xiang Ling sing a pair of brief arias from "Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy" at an informal occasion in 1990. Absolutely the most amazing impromptu performance I've ever heard. I get chills listening to him sing to this day. One of the great singers of our lifetimes.
I bought the postcards of this opera in London in the 1970's then Brian Eno used it as title for an album. Finally I found it on VCD in New Yorks Chinatown.

I saw this gentleman attend another troupe's performance of this several years back. He was much older of course, but still had a presence.
